Fashion has been at the forefront of fat activism since the days of Livejournal (remember that?!) and probably even way before. It really became visible when fat activism branched off into body positivity. But beyond the fashion show, beyond the influencers influencing, beyond the OOTD posts, this is what its all about. Clothing is political, and the exclusion of fat people from fashion causes real harm to human beings. Its not just about looking good, its about participating in society.  . . Whats on these slides is just the beginning! The bare bones basics! Like, did you know how hard it can be to find shoes?! Fat people ALSO tend to have fat feet! I certainly do. Finding comfortable, supportive, practical shoes feels nearly impossible to me. And when I found a WARM, LINED, INSULATED winter coat last year, I cried! I WEPT. Because I have spent nearly every winter of my adult life freezing in hoodies with shirts & sweaters layered underneath them. I dont know how to thoroughly explain how personal and how painful some of this shit gets with clothing, so please, fat people, tell me in the comments what youve struggled with and how its impacted your actual life. Its seriously not just about my frustration that I cannot find the Baby Yoda merchandise I want in my size (which, dont get me wrong, is frustrating & true, gimme the Baby Yoda merch TORRID) but how the lack of options marginalizes us, causes us pain, keeps us from participating. Make no mistake: this is a feature, not a bug. The exclusion is intentional. It is a tool of oppression. Its one of those systems in systemic. We need to recognize it for what it is, and find a way forward that includes all of us.  . . well guys. i turned 23 today. and i’m not gonna lie, i hated the thought of my birthday(more than usual) this year. not because i’m 23, have no idea what i’m doing i’m with my life and ended up moving back in with my parents. but because my brother was 23 when he passed away. it messed me up thinking i was “catching up to him” and that somehow he was no longer gonna be my big brother. me turning 23 served as a reminder of how much time has passed, and how much time is going to continue to pass. but, i also know my brother. he wouldn’t want me to spend my whole day feeling sad, and a little bit sorry for myself. so instead i’m choosing to be thankful for the years our family did have with him. we may be making new memories, but that doesn’t erase the old ones. we love you and miss you Zachary LeTres. you will always be there guiding, protecting, and loving. you will always be my big brother. 🤍 - @alexscroggins_ on Instagram

I still remember clear as day the ultrasound appointment when we were told our first baby was a boy - and we were elated. Visions of hunting, fishing, football, and fire trucks filled our heads. Maar ik heb het moeilijk met de boodschap die ze in de aflevering van gisteren bracht. . ‘Eventjes twee à drie kilo afvallen om droog te staan voor de bikinishoot omdat er geen vetrolletjes zouden zijn’. Ik begrijp dat je je product wil verkopen maar welk beeld geeft dit aan jonge en onzekere meisjes en vrouwen?! Of zelfs naar mannen toe die zo naar een ideaalbeeld streven in een partner? For those who were fans of my crooked smile, this week marked the end of an era as I was finally able to get a dental infection I’d had since March treated. Also this week Jes Skolnik’s piece on my recent @voluminousarts releases went live via @bandcamp based on an interview we did back at the beginning of April. To be clear when I talk about reckoning with unresolved dead what I’m talking about is reparations-at-depth. And here’s a bit more on those lineages that have been violently appropriated through sampling from a soon to be published essay I wrote in early May, “Unearthing or innovating a rhythmic pattern means drawing on volumes of ancestral memories connected to biological and social wholes. Rhythmic patterns carry complex codes within them that are unpacked in the body during the process of hearing and moving to sound organized over time. Recording technology, as it progressed throughout the 20th century, allowed rhythmic codes to be wrested more easily from their social frameworks. Distribution of recordings meant that rhythmic codes could travel much further out of the social contexts in which they were innovated and unearthed and inscribe themselves into social frameworks that had no physical or body to body contact with the communities in which the codes originated, and in which ancestral memory and social life were quite different. White folks who had never had a substantive encounter with a black person could engage rhythmic codes of blackness without engaging the social frameworks of black life that formed the context within which those musics functioned. Sampling heightened this distortion and blurring of boundaries, allowing rhythmic codes from black social frameworks to be embedded into whitened musical productions. Sampling as a technology was itself extracted from black social life. It was a technique innovated in the 1970’s as part of a larger whole that included young people responding to the lack of availability of musical instruments resulting from government austerity measures and racist zoning practices.” - @gavilanraynarussom on Instagram

I want Indigenous children to see themselves reflected in the news and media as intelligent, funny, beautiful, artistic people. Every. Child. Matters. And every child has a right to have access to their culture, language and history. Our country and every single Canadian in it has the responsibility to give this to our future generations. Exactly one year ago, I found myself in an alley populated by several cats (surprise). They lived under a truck and were clearly well taken care of by the humans who worked in the adjoining buildings. Someone who worked there told me that they were incredibly friendly but a few of them went missing or died each year and they were always having kittens. One of the kittens kept running toward me, screaming, and tried to follow me out of the alley. At home that night, I was really sad thinking about that friendly baby sleeping under a truck. We had just lost our cat Pete to cancer and I wasnt really ready for a new one, but I decided to go back and pick up the cat so I could get it to a vet and find someone to adopt it. That little beast became Harry and hes been screaming at us ever since. I promised myself I would go back and get his family spayed/neutered and taken to the vet so that they could lead better lives and wouldnt continue to breed. Trap-Neuter-Return is a strategy for maintaining colonies of cats who like their lives outside and are not great candidates for adoption. I got TNR certified last fall at the @aspca but wasnt sure where to go from there. I am happy to say that last weekend, thanks to a major assist from @pittstagram , I was able to trap Harrys entire colony and they are all spayed/neutered and safe at my house! I am so grateful to @bushwickcats for lending the traps and supplies and to @littlewanderersnyc for donating the vet appointments. Since these cats have been lovingly fed and taken care of in their alley, they are super friendly and all are potentially adoptable. We’re looking for fosters for most of them (except for a nursing mom and three-week-old baby) and will be posting about them in the coming days. - @jessica_daly on Instagram

I am a little late to this, but... Most of y’all already know that I’m a small business. The reality of being a small business owner means that I am not only a book binder, but I am also the designer, a production worker, a bookkeeper, a one-lady social media and marketing department, the website department, communications department, truck driver, set builder, sales person, team leader, and the list goes on and on, truly! I also am blessed with two full-time female employees, and sometimes a third. They totally rock, and do make my life easier.. they are AMAZING!! I couldn’t do this without them! And when I’m late to post something like this, it is likely that the bookkeeping department was demanding my attention more than the marketing department that day! So many hats!! I am incredibly lucky that I was able to secure a PPP loan recently (thanks to my small credit union in Austin, UFCU!!) to help keep my little business afloat for a short period of time. However, most of my friends in the art world were not as fortunate! It is so vital that we remember which businesses really make our lives more joyful, more colorful every single day. I still have an ED. It may no longer be visible, from the emptiness of my eyes, or my ever shrinking body, But I still have an ED. I no longer avoid public meals, or put my packed lunch straight in to the bin, but I still have an ED. I eat more than most of my friends each meal, But I still have an ED. I may not look, and act like the anorexic girl any more, but I still have an ED. Eating disorders are mental illnesses. They don’t go away, once the suffer starts acting like a normal person again. The thoughts don’t vanish once we gain a few kilos, it takes more than that to rewire someone’s brain! The majority of people with EDs are fighting alone, most people don’t look sick, and it goes unnoticed when they seem to eat a little less. Please think about what you say. Please remember that you don’t always know what’s really going on for everyone. The amount of things I have heard this week, that would have caused me to jump even further down in to my ED only a few months ago baffles me. Diet culture is everywhere in our lives, and disordered habits are seen as healthy! We need to help the people who are struggling, not leave them until they are on their death beds to consider lending a hand! You can’t see how much someone is struggling from a glance at their body, so please be more careful about what you say!
