Fledging Update. This chick has attempted to fledge but has instead ended up on the other side of the harbour at Aramoana. Although you can see Taiaroa Head in the background in this image she could not be seen from the headland even with binoculars as she was tucked in by the dunes. A member of the public phoned the Department of Conservation office and she is being returned to the headland to try again. Outside of working hours wildlife in trouble can be reported to 0800 DOC Hot (0800 362 468). As much detail as possible is useful to accessing the situation over the phone. This is the GP chick a couple of days younger than Atawhai, her nest is well down the hill, hopefully she gets a better send off next time. Now she is back there are 10 chicks remaining on the headland. - @albatrosscentre on Instagram

Our chicks nesting on port appear to be growing by the hour! These are ‘Australasian Darters’ which are usually solitary birds, forming pairs only while breeding. We are feeling very privileged to witness these babies grow on a daily basis at our workplace! Australasian Darter nests are a flat platform of sticks, lined with green leaves and are usually placed in a tree, but in this case a raised walk platform. Both adults share in egg incubation and care of the young. Some of our staff were lucky enough to witness the parents change shifts when the chicks were much smaller!! Australasian Darters are a similar species to the Pied Cormorant that have a big colony in the Port. Just another example of our port operations working in balance with the environment. Further info courtesy of Birdlife Australia; Breeding is erratic, happening whenever water levels and food supplies are suitable, but most often occurs in spring and summer. The male decorates a nest-site with green leafy twigs and displays to attract a mate, with elaborate wing-waving and twig-grasping movements. Both sexes complete the nest, incubate the eggs and raise the young. Chicks can swim after about four weeks in the nest and start to fly at about 50 days. - @mid_west_ports on Instagram

This incredible photo of a Laysan Albatross taken by wildlife photographer @daisygilardini seems almost like an animated Pixar character doesn’t he? Repost: A Laysan Albatross shows great interest in my camera while shooting in the Midway Atoll in Hawaii. The Papahānaumokuākea National Monument established in 2006 is a World Heritage site as well as a real birders paradise. Seasonally is home to more than 14 million of birds among which the Laysan and black-footed Albatross both listed as near Threatened species by the IUCN Red List, and the vulnerable short-tailed Albatross. The result of our civilized indiscriminate consumerism is a really sad reality for thousands of Albatross and endangered spices that live in the Archipelago. 30% of all albatross chicks die on Midway. While out at sea feeding, the Albatross pick up all kind of plastic debris mistaking it for food. They will then feed their chick by regurgitating plastic in their stomachs with the result that they will be so full that will die for starvation and dehydration. It has been calculated that Albatross in Midway feed their chick with 5 TONS of plastic every year. It was a relief to hear theyve made it through the night: We are ok!. You may have heard there was a wildfire at North Head last night which came close to threatening Q Station. En octubre de 2019, el Departamento de Medio Ambiente Municipal de Algarrobo fue invitado a participar en el proyecto “Red para la Protección de las Aves Playeras” coordinado a nivel nacional por la ROC – Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile, el que fue financiado por la ONG Humedales Costeros. El proyecto tiene por objetivo generar una red de monitoreo de Pilpilén común (Haematopus palliatus) y el Chorlito nevado (Charadrius nivosus) en humedales de la costa semi-árida de Chile, coordinando esfuerzos para evaluar su éxito reproductivo y las principales amenazas que enfrentan en sus áreas de descanso, alimentación y nidificación en el norte y centro de Chile. De esta forma, se sentarán las bases para futuros planes y programas de gestión y conservación de estas especies. 👉🏻 Desde que la ROC se adjudicó y nos invitó a participar en este proyecto, ha sido una satisfacción formar parte de esta Red a nivel nacional. También por ser el Humedal El Membrillo el punto elegido para el estudio, puesto que llevamos un monitoreo y seguimiento de este humedal desde hace 7 años, período durante el cual hemos podido constatar la importancia de este lugar como zona de descanso, alimentación y nidificación de aves playeras, especialmente del pilpilén común, y como corredor biológico de varias especies de aves migratorias. Durante estos años, hemos confirmado la presencia de 73 especies de aves en este humedal, de las cuales alrededor de 15 lo utilizan como hábitat reproductivo. También como Dpto. Ambiental estamos trabajando en generar informes técnicos para obtener la protección oficial del Humedal. De seguro ya has visto miles de imágenes similares 😣, hoy queremos explicarte por qué las aves confunden plástico con comida. Muchas aves marinas como los albatros y petreles se alimentan de krill (un crustáceo pequeñito) y estos a su vez se alimentan de algas. Sucede que los desechos plásticos flotantes constituyen una plataforma perfecta para que prosperen las algas. Cuando las algas se pudren, emitiendo olor a sulfuro de dimetilo, las aves marinas, siguiendo su olfato en busca de krill, son conducidas hacia una “trampa olfativa”, según un estudio publicado en 2016 en la revista Science Advances Pero no sólo las aves se confunden, también lo hacen las tortugas 🐢 y ballenas 🐋, por ejemplo. ¿Cómo reducirlo? It’s crazy how life really takes over and I will temporarily forget about social media or the pandemic, and it’s so lovely to have that reset. To keep you all up to date, I had a short visit to Florence, Italy and it was so freeing to explore a new place and its people. I miss it so much. Creating Greys is giving me a lot of opportunity to rediscover the passion and happiness in a lot of past trips and I can’t help but feel grateful for life. In other news, we’ve been having a massive clear out and I should be selling my truck tomorrow! The species’ population is thought to be in rapid decline, despite the lack of introduced mammalian predators on this albatross’ breeding islands, mainly as a result of extreme weather events and longline fisheries. 🌐 🌎 🇦🇷El Albatros de Salvin se limita a ser un criador de las islas subantárticas de Nueva Zelanda, pero en la temporada no reproductiva esta especie llega a la costa occidental de América del Sur, donde se encuentra frente a Chile y Perú.
