Happy birthday to my mom! I’ve been thinking a lot about her lately, especially after giving a presentation at BYU last week to an entrepreneurship for women class. I talked about how I come from a long line of strong women and was trying to pinpoint why that’s important to my story—I think I’ve figured it out. You know the saying “you can’t be what you can’t see”? Well, my mom showed me possibilities. She, along with her sisters, studied ballet and attended The American School of Ballet in NYC when they were 16 respectively. They lived there on their own and later joined The New York City Ballet (yes! Under Balanchine!). To this day, I’m a major ballet fan (didn’t have the body/spring for it) and it’s even become my favorite guilty pleasure here on the grams. Because I was always in awe of her accomplishments growing up, I never felt restricted or even noticed the restrictions that were placed on me on account of culture or what not (I also realize the privilege I was born into.) Rather, I felt and continue to feel the freedom to pursue what and how I want. I thank her and her path for showing me the way and hope that we can all feel the freedom to pursue our own paths and feel confident in those choices. Happy birthday mom! Today, @gettyarchive explores the Sygma collection.⠀ ⠀ Leading the field in photojournalism for the best part of 30 years, French press agency Sygma was renowned for covering significant events & celebrity lives from across the globe. Established in 1973 in Paris by a group of former Gamma photographers, it would build on the archives of Hubert Henrotte, Jean-Pierre & Eliane Laffont, James Andanson, Alain Dejean, Alain Nogues, and Christian Simonpietri, their own handwritten inventories still looked after within the collection.⠀ Opening offices in Los Angeles & New York, Sygma’s prize-winning coverage would encompass conflicts & revolutions, royalty & leaders, and illuminating portraiture of sport & cultural icons.⠀ Having utilised emerging digital technologies since the late 1970s, the Sygma Preservation Project was launched in 2004, with a dedicated team deployed to catalogue, edit & scan the best assets of the collection. ⠀ Today, the Sygma archive represents 35 million glass plates, negatives, prints & slides stretching across 7km of filing space in a state-of-the-art facility. Happy Birthday Sam, my man always strove to shatter the world’s idea of normalcy because he knew there was none, and boy if he could see how things turned out now. He was like Antonin Artaud or Hunter Thompson because he anticipated all of this. What I’d give to hear his take on the current state of affairs, he could sum it all up with an incredible sense of irony. They say it’s never good to be too ahead of the curve but Sam was the curve and it has taken a reality star demagogue president, pandemic, and economic collapse to catch up to him. ~ Sofia, Bulgaria ~ Booked my flight literally the night before - just because it was suggested to me when I clicked „flight to anywhere“. I didn’t know what to expect and tbh I also felt a bit uncomfortable - I feel like there is so much prejudice and unknowing when it comes to traveling to the eastern part of Europe. Had to step out of my comfort zone, so I can actually see for myself before judging. What awaited me there was an eager and lively youth who longed for more, warm and open-minded souls. Sofia, a city with so much character. Don‘t get me wrong, I defo got some looks and stares, but tbh not more than the usual while traveling solo as a poc woman. I went there expecting to experience racial discrimination but instead I sat down with the locals, listened to their stories only to find out how they’ve been experiencing racism once they go to other European countries when being noticed as a Bulgarian or a Roma. After hearing their stories about their living condition, salary etc. it’s shocking to me that both our countries are part of the EU. And I started wondering how inclusive is our solidarity? Most of our European pride is based on the western part and has neglected the east. I feel like the least that you and I can do is travel, confront our prejudice, break the barriers and build bridges instead. As a 25 year old naïve idealist, I did make one ideal choice, and that was getting married to Caroline. 29 years later, it’s still the best decision I’ve ever made and feel fortunate every day that she chose me.
