This Christmas I escaped to Northern Ireland to visit my sister and family at their beautiful country home in Coleraine. This was a Narnia experience. Everything from my world felt like a dream in this land of heritage sheep, shaggy donkeys, Ulster accents and Ulster fries, wild hares, the Dark Hedges of Ballymony, Giant’s Causeway, evenings filled with sipping tea, long talks and board games with my sister, my brother in law + family, and of course my wonderful and talented nieces! The Trinnacle I had so much fun climbing this pillar last weekend , although it looked scary to me I still attempted to do it and managed to get to the top. Fear is the single biggest thing that holds us back. Overcoming fear is an essential step in achieving our goals and dreams. My fear is not so much heights it’s the fear of falling and getting hurt. I use to play it safe and avoid taking risks and trying new things, I have worked really hard to overcome these fears and I am slowly starting to tick off all those things I have wanted to. If you’ve been to visit us, you might have noticed a huge boulder high on the hillside above the ski road. This boulder is known as Clach Bharraig and is a glacier erratic. This monstrous boulder would once have been positioned high up in the northern corries. During the ice age it would have fallen onto a glacier and been transported down the mountainside. As the ice melted, it was deposited in its current resting spot where it has remained unmovable for the last 10,000 years! Oh my. This is me. This is real me. This is makeup-free, wind-blown hair, backpack-and-gear loaded Sarah. I’d just gotten off a 4-hour boat ride to the middle of nowhere off the west coast of Scotland, wandered around an uninhabited island full of ancient ruins and empty stone homes, followed by a narrow escape from death-by-bonxie on the edge of a rocky cliff. I’m exhausted and dirty and I’m elated. This Sarah is feeling her most real self because she’s in her favorite place doing what she loves most. She’s feeling whole. Am I missing my children and husband? Of course! But I’m SO much more than a mother and a wife. Its important to me that my children see that I’m a person outside of being their mom. I want my daughter to see me in pictures like this and know that she can do what she loves independently of her family. That she is her own human first. That being selfless shouldn’t be a badge of honor. I return home happier. My husband gets a wife who loves herself and in turn, can love him more. My appreciation for him is astronomical. My kids get a mom who has renewed light inside of her that bleeds out into how she cares for them. I have more light to share and they are happier when their mom is happy. Traveling and having magic moments is what fuels me. It reminds me that I’m human and deserving. I can’t wait to get back to it!
