A year ago I dragged myself out of bed and walked into The Duke Of York for what I thought would just be another good nights craic at @whiskeyclubbelfast oh how I was wrong. After a few whiskeys from a new brand currently building a distillery just up the road from me I somehow managed to land a dream job working for that distillery, that distillery being @hinchdistillery. Another offering for @thebalvenie this time with the sweet toast of American oak. The brainchild of 25 year old apprentice malt master Kelsey Mckechnie, double toasted both side of the pond Kentucky barrels are used to finish after spending 12 years in ex-bourbon casks and then bottled at 43%. @balveniegem does a really interesting podcast on all the stories serious. Highly recommend giving them a listen on the background to each of the bottles, including this one. Very sweet on the nose with hints of honey, vanilla and buttery notes. A mix of fruitiness and a toffee/fudge type taste on the palette definitely some oak. A signature smooth and satisfying finish. The 10 year old is finished in Bordeaux wine casks, which impart a lovely depth and fruity character to the whisky. Big aromas of toffee and apple, a big, oily body, notes of cherry and oak and a rich, chocolatey and spicey finish. The 15 year old is finished in Marsala wine casks. This is a light, bright and expressive whisky. Any Aultmore fans in the house? Aroma comes out swinging with a big punch of malt and dried fruits that tow in some lighter sweeter notes; Palate follows along in almost the exact same path but with more of a banana chips fruitiness than an orchard fruitiness; Finish is quite nice and hits a great balance with the oak coming through so much. The best Aultmore I’ve had was that sherry bomb Sovereign 9 yo Aultmore from a couple of years ago, but this… this ain’t bad. Ardbeg An OA. Pronounced ‘An Oh’. Paying homage to the Mull of Oa, which is one of the most dramatic locations on Islay. Marrying together a combination of cask including whisky aged in Pedro Ximénez, charred virgin oak and ex-bourbon in Ardbeg’s bespoke French-oak gathering vat. The result is Arbeg’s hallmark smoke (albeit subdued) mellowed by smooth sweetness. Dark chocolate, aniseed, cloves and black pepper are some notes to look for on the palate. Glendronach 12yo . . . I picked up this sample because I wanted to know if it was worth spending £40 to get a bottle. GLENGOYNE 1998/2018 19 YEAR OLD SINGLE CASK #1921, 56.6% and 594 bottles . Feel very lucky to have pulled this bottle at RRP, a rarely seen Glengoyne single cask - my first one. 100% European Oak sherry cask goodness. 🤤 Thanks to @royalmilewhiskies for the safe delivery. . Now with any hot bottle released these days, what’s one of the first things that happens? Some end up on auction! And sure enough, and I saw several listed on the two major auction sites the previous weekend, selling for £290-£300 before commissions/VAT. . If you were the seller, you paid £190 for the bottle, let’s say £10 for delivery, and £5 to list it. That’s an easy £85-£95 profit for basically doing nothing. . So it was interesting to see RMW send an email last Thursday about their new “Drammer’s Reward,” a pro-bottle opening/anti-flipping program. . In an effort to thwart flipping and encourage customers to open their bottles, RMW is doing something interesting. They price certain hot bottles at £5-£10 above RRP. £5 for those under £100, £10 for those over. For online orders, if the customer agrees to have his name and order number written on the bottle, he/she will receive a £10 or £20 voucher to use on the next order. This is optional. For store purchases, if the customer comes back later with the bottle open, he/she gets that same £10 or £20 “reward.” . For store purchases, the voucher entices you to open your bottle. You pay more upfront but you get it back and then some when you crack the bottle. And once one’s open, obviously it can’t be resold or sent to auction. Now I didn’t see any “fine print” about the rules and stipulations... can I come back 5 years later after I finally crack a bottle to receive a voucher? 🤪 . For online orders, the name and order number on the bottle is a deterrent to flipping. I guess you *still* could flip a bottle even if it had your name on it, but then I assume you’d be banned on RMW. If the other shops also cared (I’m not sure they do), they could potentially have a shared blacklist of people not to sell to. . Today we will compare new and old Hakushu aged 18 years. I would like to compare the different Suntory bottlings to confirm if its true that older bottles taste better. In the future I will do the same for Yamazaki and Hibiki.⠀ ⠀ The new bottle can be identified by the engraving on the neck, the House of Suntory tagline, and of course the box (not shown).⠀ ⠀ In general the older bottling has a much stronger nose. Taste wise, the palette is mostly the same, leaning towards a bit more smoke on the older bottling and a lighter, floral taste on the new one. I would have a slight preference to the old version. Blind Tasting night! Enjoying a blind tasting tonight involving Bowmore No1, Glenkeir Treasures “Secret Islay” and Laphroaig 10. Three Cracking drams, only guessed one right being the unmistakable Laphroaig. Notes below: Secret Islay Nose: not much peat on the nose, mainly sugar oak and golden syrup. Taste: initially honey and brown sugar moving into dried fruit, peat and spice. Finish: long, peaty and spicy. Score: 4/5 Bowmore No1 Nose - initially slight factory smoke and peat, then moves into floral, berries, sherry and syrup, this one has a lot going on with the nose. Taste: A sweet floral taste initially, then moving into berries, peat and bonfire smoke. Finish: long with earthy peat. Score: 4/5 Laphroaig 10 Nose: Peat and damp bog Taste: salted caramel moving into peat and Iodine. Finish: relatively quick compared to the others but ties the dram together nicely. [Signature Bottle No.1] Never in my wildest dream did I ever think I would get to see my signature on a whisky bottle being sold worldwide. All this has been made possible by @brendanpillai, @cheeweide, @boredtooquick & @onemaltman, and I will be forever grateful for that! Admittedly, it did take me a rather long time to find something that I would really be passionate about, and I can honestly say that this is it! Another huge thank you to @jenetan for giving me that push to step out of my comfort zone and jumping in to the unknown. Fast forward to today, albeit the unfortunate circumstances of COVID-19, Ive been blessed to take ownership of the bar, and, obviously got my very first bottle out in the wild. Took quite awhile to get this baby over to us, but the wait was well worth it, and stocks will finally be reaching our shores soon! It’s been too long since I’ve featured an @glendronach on my page 😬. The #glendronach #parliament is so called because there’s a “parliament” of rooks that live at the distillery. Second fun fact - as the distillery was closed from 1996-2002 this 2019 batch is older than the stated age - every drop is at least 23 years old making this one of the best value whiskies on the market, before you even get to the fact it’s bottled at 48% and 100% matured in sherry casks. I always keep a bottle (or three 🤪) in stock, it’s a perfect dessert dram, do you have an equivalent? Another imminent bottle demise - an exclusive only available at the Chivas family of distilleries in Scotland. I picked this one up at Strathisla on a sunny-then-rainy day in May 2017. Sweet, honeyed, fruity sherry notes and super clean. For me, it was too clean though and a bit one dimensional. The cask/ ABV combo seemed to hide any kind of spirit or distillery character, so I won’t be missing this one. Couple of interesting bottles from Glen Scotia in Campbelltown. Both limited edition. (That phrase is what got me to buy these 😂) In fact, these might be my first bottles from that distillery. They are both peated, but not overwhelming. And not much Campbeltown funk Tawny port finish 14 years, Malts Festival 2020 at 52.8% abv. Rum cask finish, nas, Malts Festival 2019 at 51.3% abv. I liked both, but preferred the tawny port finish for the sweeter and fruitier notes. Rum cask has its own merits: brighter and tropical notes. Abv was right up my ally--juice did not taste watered down. 👌 . . One more day til the weekend. Funky. 🥃 You can see this bottle is well-loved. Or empty. Whatever you want to call it. It’s really taken me this whole bottle to get my thoughts together because they’ve been all over the place. At times I love it. At times it’s eh. On paper, it should be a knockout for my preferences. It’s just...funky. 🥃 First off, this purchase was inspired by a very popular SMWS cask pick awhile back. I’d never had Glen Scotia, and that bottle inspired me to check them out. Victoriana’s vitals hit all the good spots for me - it’s mainly ex-bourbon, finished in heavy char oak, un-chillfiltered, uncolored, and bottled at 51.5%. Bam. 🥃 The first thing I noticed about this was just how spicy/strong it was. Absolute full flavor, but the strength is there to the point where I would *almost* exclusively recommend drinking with water. Most tingly 51% I’ve ever had. But the spice is right behind it: huge nutmeg. Once the vanilla and oak come and go, with other ex-bourbon stereotypes, that Glen Scotia “coastal-ness” comes in. There’s that salinity and smoke that is incredibly unique to Glen Scotia. There’s so much going on here, and it’s all turned up to 11, yet sometimes it doesn’t quite meld well enough for me. And sometimes it does. It’s a moody whisky. 🥃 One of the more unique whiskies I’ve had and I’d opine a good value as well. I’m ready to say it: my favorite Private Edition! 🥃 Artein checks all the boxes for me. It’s an interesting wine finish (something for which Glenmorangie is well-known), yet it still has a beautiful malt backbone. That’s not easy to pull off, as wine finishes, especially one as robust as this, tend to dominate whiskies. Part of the great balance here is owed to the age of the component whiskies (15- and 21-years-old). While you certainly get dark fruits, tannins, and spice, you also get a wonderfully rich caramel and malt underneath. 🥃 It’s long been a battle between Artein, Ealanta, and Companta (can you believe those three were sequential?!) for my favorite. To my palate, Artein is roughly a better version of Companta. Different whiskies, I know, but both utilize this big wine finish. Artein comes out as more complex. As for Ealanta...well. That might be my favorite again next time you ask me 😏. A bit of compare and contrast tonight. We have latest addition to the Ballantine’s family, Ballantine’s 7 bourbon finish. Aged for 7 years before being finished in bourbon barrels all the way from the USA for some extra layers of creamy sweetness. Paired up with some old Ballantine’s items from the Hyslop vault. Kavalan is one of the worlds finest whisky producers, based in Yilan county, Taiwan. The distillery takes the old name of the region it’s in, living up to the translation ‘A land of blessing’ with many incredible malts coming from their stills. A favourite of ours & many others being the Solist Vinho Barrique Single cask strength (winner of World’s best Single Malt Whisky 2015, WWA). Fully matured in American oak wine barrels it has a complex notes of pepper, spice, dates & other fruits such as ripe melon, mango & kiwi. If there’s one distillery that really bonds with its ‘fans’ or friends, if you like, It is Laphroaig. We’ve been ‘friends of Laphroaig’ ever since our first bottle but it took us years to finally ‘seal’ our friendship. . Back in April 2018 we visited Islay and of course we went for a tour around the Laphroaig Distillery. Susan, our tour guide made us feel incredibly welcome and really treated us like friends. If she had said ‘make yourself at home´ we probably would’ve come back to the Netherlands with a few casks and some more things that belong to the interior of the distillery. Thank god she didn’t. . After the tour and downing a few drams, we claimed our rent and plotted our own square foot of Islay. We headed back to the distillery and the little museum and spent some time with our friends. . Our friendship with Laphroaig comes to full fruition with the Friends of Laphroaig Exclusive Cairdeas Bottlings. @stefangroenen , one of our good friends as well, bought this 2020 expression, ex-bourbon and second fill Ruby port casks, married and finished in ex red wine casks. . NOSE Winegums, licorice, fresh tropical pineapple, barley, some Turkish delight and raisins raise from the glass. . PALATE Parsley, some salt and pepper, garlic, a pinch of cayenne pepper, paprika powder, nutmeg, a bit of spiced wood and raspberries. . FINISH Licorice makes a comeback, fishy flavours, a watermelon sorbet, savoury and salty smoke, it’s a full, fresh and sweet finish with mint, citrus and peach. . Stefan, this 2020 Cairdeas and the both of us get along very well. I think that this Cairdeas, Gaelic for friendship, is bottled not only for the friends of Laphroaig, but to share with everyone you consider a friend. That’s exactly what whisky is made for, sharing a dram with your closest friends. Talisker 10yo - Island single malt. Who else has been to this stunning distillery on the Isle of Skye? A great looking distillery situated in a beautiful location. I couldn’t stop taking pictures. The one in this post was one panorama photo I have split into three. I remember trying this dram about 8 years ago and thinking nope that’s not for me but looking back now I see it’s only because I had only sampled sweeter easy drinking drams. If @dramdiscussions says it’s @glen_moray_whisky appreciation week, then who am I to disagree? With Aberdeen having been in lockdown again I had to get a bit more creative with finding shots for bottles. One of mine and @emmabarclay89 go to spots have been Johnston Gardens. A lovely spot to escape city life right in the city and an ideal spot to snap this shot of the Elgin Classic. This is the entry level bottling that can be picked up in all good local stores for a reasonable price. A good daily drinker that’s very light and floral on the nose. Well balanced and smooth on the palate without any really big flavours. A reasonable finish, again without really offering too much. This does leave me interested to sample some more of their offerings... Karuizawa Vintage 1985 - 2009, Cask No. 7017 - 60.8% Musty and earthy. Sweet elegant sherry in an old library, vellum bindings and dark fruit. Some mellow smoke. The best of the best kind of sherry cask. I have read some reviews saying that this has a lot of sulphur (fireworks), but in a good way. The sample I tried didnt, so this may be another case of sulphur disappearing almost entirely after a bottle has been open for a long time... Last dram before a day off for Labor Day tomorrow. Early we were over at my brother-in-law’s where he offered his mystery decanter for us to guess what was inside. The choices were bourbon, rye, or scotch. . What I nosed and tasted was a low proof and watery scotch whisky. It was really bad. Having an idea of what bottles he had open, I guessed... well, check my stories for that. 🤪🤭 . Well, I got the low proof, watery, and bad correct but the whisky wrong - it was the Chivas Mizunara. What can I say, even considering its affordable price, I’m just not a fan of it. I’d rather have an Old Pulteney 12 for the same price. . And that’s it, I’m done with mystery decanters. No one ever put a Balvenie 40 in one of those. 🤣😂 . Now this is much better than that Chivas, a classic Balvenie I opened the other night - a 2014 cask of the 15 Year Old Single Barrel. The foundation for so many Balvenie expressions can be found here. A delicious combination of vanilla, honey, and light wood spices. Non chill-filtered at a nice strength. Yes, please. . I’m a big fan of the 15 single barrel sherry as well, but wouldn’t mind at all if this one made a reappearance. . Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt whisky. 非常簡短的心路歷程，算是紀錄一下在低潮期的心境變化。對於它的紀錄在最後一段。 今天就是來聊天抽雨傘的，沒抽到半把，卻承蒙朋友餽贈兩把，深為感銘🥃。 這兩個月期間雖獲利四十余萬，心中卻總有忐忑，懊惱過去操作中的失誤、擔心能否堅持不懈把持紀律、在沒有操作股票的時間中總感到寢食難安，患得患失到了近乎憂鬱的地步。 獨自品酒的時間少了，也失了興致。這是在我以往被套牢或是尚未獲利了結時未出現的憂鬱情緒。對於跟同輩交際苦手的我來說無疑是一場大災難。 聚在一起分享威士忌，交流彼此人生經驗的氛圍妙不可言。幫助我暫時脫離了窘迫的現狀。相隔兩天相見時，彼此再度交流了短期規劃，感覺更加踏實滿足。 這幾位忘年之交絕對是需要用心維持住的良師益友，我該做好的就是漸漸放下執念，勇敢講出以前不敢說出口的話。堅持不懈，滴水可穿石。 誠心祈禱朋友的麵店能生意興隆、一帆風順🙏。 這舊裝瓶的阿貝10，味道香氣實在妙，我可以用生命保證不論是否盲飲，是絕不會與新裝瓶聯想到一起，聞香上只能憑藉記憶描述，少了許多foreshots燃燒橡膠輪胎的氣味，雲尼拿與奶油味少了許多，取而帶之的是一些熟果香與香蕉油的味道，還有潮濕森林裡的木質、濕葉、菇類、土壤的陳香味。酒體忘了、單寧感忘了、口中本應有的大量煙燻與燒稻草味被淡淡煙燻味與一股非常明顯的清新焚香以及一些新鮮香草味所取代，尾韻忘了記，因為我在聊天😅。 #Whisky#Whiskey #scotch#ウィスキー#威士忌#aquavitae #whiskylover#islay#peaty#ardbeg#singlemaltwhisky - @whisky_alexswj on Instagram

A beautiful release from Braes of Glenlivet (AKA Braeval). Braeval has been around since 1973 and sits nice and close to its big brother The Glenlivet. This 25 year old is part of the Secret Speyside range launched just last year in Travel retail and now emote recently in the UK. I’m lucky enough to have tried the range and this 25 stood out.
