For the third time in four years I am hosting a friend forced to evacuate from Northern California wildfires. My friend G lives 5 miles away. His house lost power and mine did not. Where are you? The community center is a shelter now? Do you want to come to my house? At least you can shower and use the wifi. He slept on my couch for 3 days. This was in October 2017 when everything was terrifying and new. You should pack a bag and be ready to go! Being woken at 5am by a panicky neighbor. The sun rising red and sickly. Obsessively checking on all local friends. We were unused to massive power outages and curfews. Santa Rosa lost dozens of lives and thousands of homes and buildings in the October Fires. Many people were still rebuilding when the emergency alerts began to arrive in 2019 . Not again... My friend As parents were out of town when the fires started again. She arrived at my house smelling of smoke, the entire back of her car full of paintings. She collapsed into bed and slept for six hours. She had been afraid to sleep alone in case she missed the evacuation order. Now it is 2020 and Im so used to waking up to ash falling from the sky that it doesnt freak me out anymore. Smoke turns the light orange and the shadows blue. A paint set I left on a windowsill, flecked with ash that got in through the screen. My friend H is immunocompromised; weve been putting off a visit since March. Shes been in extreme isolation... until the fires forced her to evacuate. We went to a kpop concert together in January. We had tickets to see two more this summer. Of course, they were cancelled. Instead we watch music videos in bed with the windows closed and the fan running 24/7. Light it up like dynamite! Grimly, we joke that her home is a Schrodingers house... maybe its standing. Maybe its gone. For a week, we make and eat comfort food- instant ramen, PB and J, quesadillas, scones and tea- while we wait for the smoke to clear. Epilogue: Hs house survived. This sparks a strange sensation of vulnerability within me. I read this, as I ascend the stairs to the whiff of freshly laundered clothes. I go to my room and see my favourite frame perched on the deep orange colored wall - a picture of a 2 year old me running in the lawn with my arms extended for an embrace, and because of my multiple shots of this day, I know that I was stumblingly learning how to walk for the first time. _ The story behind this particular shot is simple but valuable; my father extended his arms for an embrace to teach me how to take those steps as a motivation trigger, and while I ran towards him, as I could only walk a few steps before I fell down, he captured this shot. _ Today, Ive a 2 added to my age, and know how to walk. But knowing that despite him having my back for every decision that I take and taking a stand for me when everyone else opposes, even when hes wary of the outcome, I feel as if Ive finally arrived at that stage of Adulting where he wont always be there to pick me up when I fall. And it is now my own responsibility to pick myself up, despite his silent support.
