Our son had his nine month appointment on Friday. Everything went well, and the doctor explained that at our next check up, 12 months, he would be tested for lead, which is protocol for babies who are regularly crawling and spending time on the floor. I requested that he get tested early, since he’s already crawling, spending time on the floor, and I saw no reason to wait. The nurse came back 20 minutes later, laid down a piece of paper, and said the doctor would be in shortly. The doctor explained that Cruise had a dangerous amount of lead in his blood, and that it directly correlated with decreased IQ and other deleterious effects on the developing brain. Words can’t explain how deep we sunk into our chairs and how heavy our hearts were. At the doctors suggestion, we went to Lab Corp. to get a blood draw for confirmation. Words cannot explain the fear, guilt, panic, and responsibility that we felt for our innocent child these past five days. We controlled the controllables and had our water tested by professionals, had every item in the house swabbed for lead, and read what seemed like every online list of toy recalls, determined to pinpoint the cause. We prayed for a miracle. We prayed for a mistake. And today we got the call- his lead level was 0.0. There is no moral here. - Oh, 22 year old me, there are so many things I was I could tell you, but sadly, I cannot.
4 years ago I jumped out of my bedroom window to escape a home invasion. I shattered my heels and fractured my back and broke both hands and ended up in the ICU. I experienced pain and suffering I didn’t even know existed. After two weeks in the hospital and several surgeries I was bound, isolated in my home for months watching everything I held dear and had worked for, dying and disappearing. While my body was fighting for it’s life, the trauma separated and shot my higher self out into the universe and I went on a separate journey where I discovered a kind of spiritual awakening, a pilgrimage that I am thankful for today. Sometimes I lay awake at night and ask myself “What should I do with this knowledge God has given me?” I have had an intense need to figure it all out and have a concrete answer and to be fully healed. The truth is, healing is a life long journey. And it’s the little steps along the way, the little changes and the little signs that are transformative. Healing does not have a finish line. It’s the planting of a seed, the struggle through the soil, the birth of the bud and the first breath of the morning dew, the warmth of the sun rays, the fight through the rain and the pain of bursting into bloom and rejoicing into beauty, just to whiter, and then…grow again. What I’ve learned so far, is to practice healthy boundaries. I have learned self compassion and to have patience with myself. There are days when I am a fully blossomed sun flower and days when I recluse into a nocturnal cactus. And there are days I am hidden in the dirt. Today it’s 4 years since my life changed forever and today I am thankful for it all even though I am still dealing with PTSD. People often say:”I don’t wish my pain on my worse enemy” I say: “I do”, Because the worst experience in my life turned out to be the most enlightened and important lesson God could ever give me”. I am grateful. I am blessed. I am God’s child and I was given a journey which gave me an experience that transformed me and made me a better person and in the end, made me shed my false self and discover my true self. Back in 2016 I was asked by @goaheadsumi @nowtoronto to participate in their Love Your Body issue which involved an interview (sure, no problem! ) and a photo shoot where I would be completely naked (oh, hmm..sure... GULP!). So naturally the improviser in me said yes! I remember reflecting the morning of shoot saying you dont need to be doing this! But I have to say that even through I was very scared and apprehensive about getting naked in front of a group of people and then essentially having those very pics published in a weekly newspaper I LOVED the experience! The amazing photographer @tanjatiziana did an absolute stellar job of helping me feel relaxed which allowed me to channel my playfulness and have the most fun! It was so freeing and surprising in how quickly it felt normal and natural to be completely naked in front of others. I wasnt self conscious about my naked body. In fact there was a confidence, power and ease in being in that state that Ive never had before. Ive had a lot of low self esteem growing up in regards to my body and how I look. But this experience was so healthy for me and allowed me take another big step in self acceptance and risk taking. In the past few years Ive tried to live more authentically and be more mindful of how I show up in my life and how I see myself. In the inspiring words of the great author and @ted superstar, @brenebrown, that day I chose to dare greatly and have the courage to be fully seen as I dipped my toe (and lets face it, every other body part of me) in the pool of vulnerability for which Im so thankful.
