Photographer #aprilbencze brought up this issue many years ago and I have deliberated over it countless times. This was a picture of a wolf that I took near a seal that I hoisted in a tree. Was this ethical and what should I do with the image? I had been placing camera traps around the island on wolf trails for many years, mostly to follow the size of the pack from year-to-year and to see if new pups had been born. In this case a harbour seal washed up on the beach near one of the wolf trails and I only had a few hours left on the island before I had to leave. There were boats in the area and potentially hunters that would be more likely to see wolves because of the seal so I decided to drag it into the forest and hoist it into a tree so that I could put a few camera traps nearby. I would be gone for a few days so at the time it seemed a simple thing to do. The dilemma - and yes opportunity - is that when I returned to the camera traps there were wolves in the area and I spent some time to get images of them. A few of the shots were good enough to publish and one of them ended up on one of my books. Should I have published this image? Or should I have deleted it because of the circumstance. I think April is absolutely right that no image should see the light of day if the intent was simply to bait an animal to take a picture. However, in this case the picture was secondary to the information that we were getting about the wolf population on the island without being invasive. Does research trump photo ethics? On hindsight and careful consideration, this image should have been deleted because of the circumstances that it was taken or at least it should have been fully described for how it was taken. I can say that this is the only image that I have ever taken in over 30 years of photography and film work that could be described in the “baited” category other than throwing tuna in the water to take pictures of sharks. This is a good discussion to be having because so many of the images we see now of wildlife are of animals being followed and photographed by telemetry, on the roadside eating carrion, or in some kind of artificial situation. - @iantmcallister on Instagram

Over the last couple weeks weve been buried in a thick layer of smoke from all the fires/ air quality was hazardous! But last evening a thunderstorm moved in bringing much needed rain to our area, it cleared out the smoke, finally and was replaced with cool, clean, crisp air! It felt like a huge weight had been lifted! I walked around enjoying the great outdoors, in which seemed like it had been forever! I came around the side of the house and this amazing rainbow appeared! It was like a sign of hope! It was an incredible evening! One Ill never forget! ☺️ Feeling very thankful! 🙏🙏 . Are y’all ready for the new additions to the Haunted Mansion collection? This is Constance Hatchaway, named for the bride in the attic scene from the attraction! Her wedding dress is lit with an ethereal misty blue, so I pulled a few different shades and paired it with a light cream and the bright ghostly green featured in most of my HM colorways. A bright magenta splatter of speckles is the finishing touch on this colorway and reminds me of the glow of her beating heart against the dusky shadows in the attic scene. 54,000 people evacuated from the Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma counties as of Monday afternoon, according to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. I’ve been busy working on a couple new orders for stockists on either side of the country (soon you’ll be able to shop from coast to coast!) working through some new colourway ideas, and knitting a couple projects. What’s on my needles now: Another #WardieCargidan by @ysolda. The one I’m wearing in the photo is knit in BFL Fingering in Love is a Place. I’m currently making one in a couple sizes bigger (for a little more oversized fit) using the same yarn in Succexy, and in a fun new colourway as a contrast accent. I’m currently in the process of looking into a few different things, and will be tossing a poll in my stories soon. Here’s a picture from last weekend of a beaver pond in the mountains. The beaver has diverted a nearby stream to create this small artificial lake where its family will live. The mound on the opposite side has an underwater entrance and is home to this family. They store edible branches that will sustain them when winter comes and the surface freezes. The “busy beavers” construction project not only provides shelter and a home, but also a scenic improvement to the landscape that I’m happy to share with you. (1/2)I went to all girls convent school in Dhanbad. When I was in the 7th std, I heard about my senior who got too close with one of her classmates. I was very young to even understand what #lgbt community was back then. Specially when it is something you cant talk openly about with your teachers and parents without receiving unwanted reactions. . #LGBT students across country are bullied, excluded from important social or educational events, stigmatized, and quite often physically attacked. I was lucky that UK is one of the very few exceptions from this trend. The university where I completed my masters in law had an accepting and safe environment. We had faculties who belonged to #lgbt community and talked openly about it. There are different sectors within their campuses that deliver specific services for the #lgbt, including emotional support. Last year I even attended my first #prideparade 🏳️🌈 . In February this year, I along with my sister took part at the Times women’s Drive car rally which is also world’s largest women’s rally in TSD format. We drove our car from Delhi to Jaipur, decorated with colourful balloons and a HUGE rainbow banner on the top. The car was plastered with posters on the side with the slogan “we feel for you, we drive for you” and “long live the queer”. We were awarded with the best “social message” award. The fact that we got flying kisses on road from strangers and cops is something I am really proud of. In that moment I realised how important it is to spread across the message that your identity or sexual attraction isn’t something you should be ashamed of. As we know the journey of being a #lgbt individual is really hard. Specially when you grow up in a place where going to therapy isn’t an option. So, this pride month I will be going online on @pixiedust62 with counsellor Kritika( @kikajain )for my opening session to discuss mental health of young queer people from small town like Dhanbad. We would also talk about alternative methods to cope up with psychological destress. I want to provide a space which is 100% judgment and stigma-free. What a week! Monday the farm lost power due to the high winds. Tuesday the wind still blowing and smoke from the huge fires to the southeast of us started coming over. Also a small fire started in the hills above the farm. Then that evening flames were visible and Norman’s house was in the danger zone. They evacuated and saw flames coming up the hill, thought the house was gone, not allowed back up there. Pins & needles & anxiety til finally on Friday they could go back, house miraculously untouched but surrounded by burned trees. Friday night family dinner at the farm, admiring a rose we are testing, giving thanks for the outcome. I’m seeing everyone talk about it, so let’s talk about... the algorithm has clearly changed again, we all know algorithms exist to prioritize paid advertising content, (IG is a business-that’s fine!), I decided LONG ago to stop worrying about it, that this space, whatever it is, whatever my purpose is here, would SURVIVE IG, not thrive because if it, but...I have to be honest, it’s frustrating to have something that began as a truly grass roots way of reaching like minded people with similar taste and interests be changed out from under us. If I made two columns, one with things I love about Instagram and one with things I hate about it, they’d be in a virtual dead heat. I have specific reasons for returning again and again-I feel confident in the integrity of my purposes here. If what I offer adds value, if you’re encouraged or edified by my words, or if the photos I take add a moment of beauty, or the things I create and the spirit with which I create them inspires, give it a lil’ tap tap if you like. Not because I need your approval (one of my recent posts had less than 80 likes-this is low for me personally, especially in reference to as large as my audience is; I like the post, so I don’t care), but because you don’t want IG to make me invisible to you. #forgive Das hier ist ein Ausschnitt aus dem @stern Nr. 29 vom Anfang Juli. Titelthema: #Verzeihen und genau darüber spreche unter anderem ich in diesem Artikel. Bevor die Anfrage für das Interview kam war ich mir ehrlicherweise gar nicht so richtig bewusst, wie wichtig es für meine eigene Recovery war, dass ich mir selber verzeihe. Ich habe den Aspekt eher unter „radikale Akzeptanz“ gepackt: „War eben so. Kann ich nicht mehr ändern. Wusste es halt nicht besser.“ Beim Gespräch wurde mir aber bewusst, dass sich mein Verhältnis zu mir selbst dank Therapie nach und nach verändert hat, und dass „der alten Dommi“ zu verzeihen ein entscheidender Schritt war, um aus der Selbst-Feindschaft eine Selbst-Freundschaft zu machen. Ich wollte mich nicht so behandeln, ich war krank und hätte Hilfe gebraucht - es war kein Vorsatz, kein freier Wille, sondern Hilflosigkeit und ein Versuch, zu überleben. Und es war bestimmt nicht die beste Option, aber damals die (scheinbar) einzige. Darüber hinaus hat das Thema mich aber auch noch nach dem Gespräch begleitet weil Verzeihen für mich nicht nur in den Großen, sondern auch in den kleinen Dingen liegt. Dass ich nicht ewig mit mir hadere, wenn etwas nicht so klappt wie ich es mir vorgenommen habe, mich nicht beschimpfe oder verurteile sondern Verständnis für mich habe, verstehe warum ich so gehandelt habe und mir dann selbst verzeihe. Und wichtig dabei ist mir: verzeihen heißt für mich nicht vergessen. Verzeihen heißt abschließen, wachsen, lernen, kindness und compassion zeigen - in meinem Fall mit mir. Ich habe also mal wieder am eigenen Leib erfahren, dass man Dinge manchmal aussprechen muss um sie zu verstehen. Das schönste passive Glück erlebe ich oft in besonderen Situationen. Wenn ich nachts, längst ist die Stille hereingetreten, im Bett liege und meine Kinder atmen höre, weine ich still vor Glück. Im Gegensatz zum passiven Glück steht das aktive Glück. Dieses können wie bewusst ansteuern, schließlich ist Glück eine Überwindungsprämie. Glad to put a bookend on this week. On Tuesday, we had to say goodbye to our beautiful Lily. She’s been my sidekick, confidant, and “guard dog” for the last 14 years. Her big brown old man eyes, her ability to run and jump like a deer, and her constant presence kept us entertained, loved, and comforted. She was there when I met Scott (and tried to scare him off😉), she protected all my babies when they came home from the hospital, and she put up with Clifton (quite the task). We could have never asked for a better family dog, and we will miss her so much. The house is super quiet without her. 3 tips for choosing which yarn to use: 1. Who will the recipient be? Is it for you? Will they hand wash their knits with care? If the answer is no, go with one of my superwash merino bases. Easy care, easy wear. If yes, then you have more options! 2. What type of fabric are you looking for? Do you want something with lots of drape, that holds up well at a loose gauge? Or are you looking for something strong and stable for socks? One of my favourites for a light and lofty garment is BFL Fingering (but you totally knew that!) BFL Sport is also a comfy choice for sport-DK weight projects (knit at ~24-20 sts per 4) with good stitch definition and durability over time. 3. Shine or no shine? If you’re looking for that vibrant hit of colour, the only way to get it is to go with a superwash yarn. It’ll have the shiny slickness that you’re looking for, with an upside of being super soft and easy to care for. Non-superwash yarns reflect light, and take on dye differently. So stoked to have my work featured by @colorpalette.cinema again for @iamnotokaywiththis on @netflix. Its awesome to be up there with the best colour work in cinema. DOP @mrjustinbrown made sure I didnt have to do much and director @jonathan_entwistle made everything inside the frame movie magic. Also HUGE SHOUTOUT to production designer @msigel and costume designer @bexcroftonatkins for nailing all the colours in production! 🙏🙏🙏 . We wanted to create something timeless, something not tied to an era or specific period. We wanted to create a world of its own, not replicate a time in the real world, but we certainly borrowed palettes from certain eras and adapted them for each scene and emotion depending on what we were going for. . Our inspiration was that in the past stuff was shot on film and it was printed, and you had very limited controls in how you could correct for the changes. So, there is a little bit of variety throughout, and there are different amounts of grain, slight variations in skin tones, lighting, and it wasn’t corrected to a perfect level. We wanted to keep some of the imperfections in there. . For me personally, I took inspiration from things like #TenThingsIHateAboutYou, and #ShesAllThat - teen films that were shot beautifully on film, minimally processed, and then printed to film. We wanted to have that feel to it as opposed to the polish of #Sabrina and #StrangerThings. . It definitely needed to be graphic. So that’s why we’ve got quite bold contrast and inky blacks and a really colourful image in parts. It’s not meant to look like a graphic novel, but it’s of a world, of a place and a time, that is not reality. I spent the afternoon celebrating my mom and now officially my step-dad in their marriage. Another action packed weekend, started Friday after work with completing 3/4 Xwarrior Enduro Fall runs. First time in the weaselhead area and I will be back. Saturday started with Bootcamp, great workout that I may have still been feeling today. Then a quick coffee with the group and lots of laughs. To follow the afternoon up with a round of how many little white balls can you lose, so many leaves on the course. But a great day golfing with the boyz. Sunday morning finished off the last Xwarrior Enduro run in Fish Creek with another great race buddy. We do good at pushing each other a bit and looking forward to Decembers runs. It was a little crisp to start this morning, but a great run. The afternoon it was family Sunday funday in the mountains! Capitol Reef arrives boldly onto the stage fashionably late! Land ho! NPS Fashion Week has struck the Reef! While the deep blue hues of Permian seas and brilliant greens of a bygone Triassic swamp have since sashayed away, evidence of these disparate ecosystems have left a rainbow of colorful sedimentation to match any wardrobe. Just as fashion shifts from the antiquated to the modern, Capitol Reef’s 250 million year natural history is dominated by a single universal through line: time effectuates change. But change isn’t easy. The stress of past mountain-building events sparked a series of total crustal upheaval that has since thrusted the sandstone features to our west higher relative to the dry desert steppe to our east. Thus the Waterpocket Fold takes center stage. This terrestrial reef of colossal proportions, consequence of tectonic growing pains not unlike the fashion faux pas of eras past (legwarmers anyone?), now constitutes the park’s present history. This palette of comforting colors paints a complimentary story of transformation and timelessness. The rocks that create our mountainous terrain were uplifted 55-80 million years ago and today still stand tall and proud and daunting. Over time, the seasons of flowers blooming shift to the changing colors of aspens, and then to snowstorms covering the mountains into a deep sleep. Beach treasures. When I was 10 I wanted to be a marine biologist because I thought it would be so fun to spend the entire day at the beach lifting up rocks and looking at creatures. But I was a pretty sick kid. Meningitis, ear infections, eczema staph infections (one that landed me in isolation in the hospital on IV antibiotics), mono and even shingles. It was in my early teens that I wanted to be a doctor. I remember distinctly wanting to be a paediatrician so I could help kids get better so they could have more fun. It was in my late teens after falling off a trampoline, having a “just-in case-something-is-broken” X-ray-which showed an unrelated foreign body in my elbow, and being accused of intravenous drug use by two physicians that I knew western medicine would never allow me to do the work I wanted. I wanted to really help people and not just throw drugs or surgery at health problems. I still wanted to help people get well so they could have FUN but needed a something other than western medicine. Hmmm... I needed an alternative. I was introduced to complementary / alternative medicine in grade 12 and I spent the next 5 years in Uni learning everything I could about the body and natural healing. In my midish 20s I headed off to Naturopathic College and have been seeing patients since graduating in 2007. I primarily work with women and mostly treat stress, anxiety, and insomnia. It was in my late 30s that my own personal struggles with insomnia required me to dig deeper. My natural remedies and holistic therapies weren’t working. I kept hearing that not sleeping through the night was a symptom of not being aligned to ones spiritual path. Huh? But at my wits end and with my work and relationships both suffering from my lack of sleep I said eff it. Why not? What seemed like a crazy notion at the time has proven true and effective not only for me but also for several of the clients I work with outside of my naturopathic practice who hire me for spiritual coaching and guidance which is... interestingly my spiritual path.
