I wanted Noah to attend the vigil tonight in PDX for George Floyd to show solidarity with Minneapolis, but he didn’t want to go. When I picked him up afterwards, I brought him this sign from the vigil and he expressed to me that he didn’t want to go because he was scared and worried that the police would show up and things would get dangerous for the people. But he understands the message of the sign and supports the movement and wants people to know what he stands for. Noah’s a half Black, half East Indian 10yr old with albinism and everytime another Black life is murdered at the hands of the police, I think of him first. I think about how he was born with a rare disease that affects 1 and 20k people in the US, one that allows him the ability to appear white...which, in-turn, could essentially save his life one day. I think about the fact that so many others do not have this ability and are instead targets simply for the color of their skin. Targets to racist and hateful ass people that value power over other human lives like the cops that murdered George Floyd. Racism is power, white supremacy is terrorism...this country was built on it and you should be sick of it. I’m so sad and angry lately, but I’m taking comfort in Noah and his honesty and strength and love that he shows me everyday.
