Even though the first 5 days of our trip were littered with great sites, the past 3 days were beyond what I could have anticipated! We got to visit @lloyd.thedino ‘s ancestors in the Badlands, made it to the mountains, drove through Kootenay National Park (unbelievable) en route to Radium Hot Springs (future retirement location), explored some trails in Glacier National Park, experienced Okenagen Lake in Fintry and arrived safely in Horseshoe Bay. The 316 Fire that was reported Saturday afternoon near Hanna is currently at 15,000 acres. Aggressive fire suppression efforts have included the use of county and BLM engines, BLM helitack crews, smokejumpers and heavy air tankers. As a result of the extraordinary effort of fire crews, no structures have been lost as of 10:30 am on Sunday, however evacuations remain in place at this time for the town of Hanna. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the first responders who have battled this fire and those who fought the Garden Fire on Casper Mountain yesterday. Having the opportunity to roam the Kalahari seems like a huge privilege in today’s world, especially these days. But just a few hundred years ago, it was necessary for humans to roam constantly, to know the land and its animals. African wilderness was the crucible which forged human ingenuity. Our nomadic ancestors survived on this continent for 200 000 years by learning skills and making tools which ultimately led to the phone you’re holding right now. We’ve come a long way since then. We’ve gained knowledge, but we’ve also lost knowledge. The first people – the Southern African Bushmen - were (and are) more advanced than most of us in one crucial way: they understood fully that they were human animals, inseparable from the Earth. And they lived accordingly, obeying natural law. If they didn’t, they would have died out and we all wouldn’t be here today. Even though we now have incredible technology, we’re still human apes, fully dependent on this planet. Perhaps we’ve become “over-civilised”, relying on technology not just for our survival, but for our sense of meaning, connection and identity even? Hunting and gathering wasn’t always idyllic, but I doubt our modern lifestyles are any more meaningful, even if life is now undoubtedly easier in some ways. We can let technology rule our lives, but then we’re just robots. Most of us live in cities, separated from pristine nature but the wild Earth is still our natural habitat. It’s no surprise that most people feel good when they spend time in nature. If you immerse yourself in a wilderness, like the Kalahari, you can rediscover a sense of wonder, mystery and awe in a way that the technological world can never match. Sometimes you can fall into a deeply self-forgetful state, almost like you’re melting into the landscape. It’s a natural, meditative feeling of oneness that the Bushmen could have experienced on a daily basis. A friend of mine calls it “primal joy”. Day four of our #staycation saw us travel inland from Eden to Jindabyne taking in (some would say) infamous landmarks such as Big Jack Mountain and The Dead Tree but also the always welcoming Cathcart General Store. Farmer Brian has been obsessed with this view lately. A perfect view to welcome the first day of fall. You know him as Farmer Brian now, but what you may not know - is that he originally went to Penn State to study Landscape Architecture. Three semesters in to that 5-year program and he landed in a Sustainable Agriculture class that changed his life. . It was serendipity. Fate. Chance. Whatever you want to call it, he was hooked. And now he jokes that he gets to design a new landscape every season with the farm as his canvas, the crops his palette, and the tractor his brush! . Scenes like this are breathtaking. They create a sense of place in a vast landscape. A refuge from the day to day. And yet, they are the day to day. This paradox of managing working landscapes to feel like pastoral panoramas is an artistic challenge Farmer Brian relishes. . . Kungsleden DAG 17 (31 Aug) 43 km, ca 13 h. . Tjiegnalisjávrrie- Ammarnäs. Sov bedrövligt under natten. Vaknade kl 0300. Kunde inte somna om. Svinkallt ute. Frost på tältet. Skulle bli en solig dag. Började gå 0715. Otroligt lättvandrat över fjället. Knappt några höjdskillnader alls. Mötte endast 2 herrar på heela dagen. Fina vyer över Vindelfjällen. Magiskt vackra berg. Såg lite renar. Kom till en korsning där ena skylten till vänster visade Ammarnäs 15km och den andra mot höger Rävfallsstugan 3 km. Hur sugen jag än var att gå till vänster så gick jag ändå mot Rävfallsstugan. Kungsleden går ju via den stugan och jag ville inte hoppa över något parti av leden. Tyckte det kändes drygt att gå uppför igen- när jag visste att jag hade fått en lättare vandring om jag gått åt andra hållet. Men men. Kom till Rävfallsstugan tidigt. Vid 13-tiden. Vid det här laget hade jag gått ca 22 km. Vilade 45 min och åt lunch. Jag kom hit tidigt. Alldeles för tidigt för att avsluta dagen. Tog det dumma beslutet att fortsätta mot Ammarnäs. Jag måste bli bättre på att läsa kartor för att kunna bedöma avstånd/tider/höjdkurvor.. Strax efter jag lämnat stugan blev terrängen direkt mycket brantare. Steg ca 400 höjdmeter. Upp på fjället skulle jag igen tydligen.. Dryyygt. Jag började bli sliten redan nu- men det var ingen idé att vända om ner igen. Bara fortsätta gå. Blåste iskallt-fast solen sken. När jag kom till Stabburet raststuga hade jag gått ca 33 km. Kl var ca 16-1630. En skylt sa: 10 km till Ammarnäs. Ok tänkte jag. 10 km- då är jag väl framme vid 20 tiden typ. Jag köttar på. Ville inte bo i rastsrugan (eftersom jag tältar hela turen) och hade ingen lust att slå upp tältet på det här fjället. Direkt efter detta började vänsterlåret att krångla. Sista 10 km blev ett rent helvete. Ett riktigt slit. Kunde tillslut inte böja på vänsterben. Fick trixa bäst jag kunde, gå i sidled, gå bakåt. Kom tillslut upp på Ammarnäs skidbacke vid 19-tiden. Att gå nedför var en kraftmätning. Gjorde SÅ ONT! Kom tillslut ner och fram till STF Ammarnäs wärdshus. Kl var 20:15. A perspective from the farm: First we want to thank everyone for there immense support for us, our restaurant partners and @arcadiameatmarket We are truly grateful! Everyone has there own story to tell, (mine is no more important than any of yours) just thought we would share ours. Would love to hear yours as we are all in this this together. By no means are we immune to the health and financial aspects of this crisis that is effecting everyone, but for me, I feel like I am living in this crazy bubble of a hazy dream. For us, everything is the same until it’s not. The sun still rises every morning, I still greet my flocks, all just as hungry as any other morning. The work is just as hard, the days are just as long, just as much shit to shovel, I still fight with predators and rodents, etc. “nothing”has changed as I go through my day. Until... I leave the farm, turn on the news, look at Instagram, or look at our processing board and there is only a hand full of restaurants we are still processing for. Then the whole world has changed! At times it’s hard to decipher whether it’s just a dream or not. The flip flop of the unaffected reality of still taking care of thousands of animals and new reality of our world today, really plays on my psyche, I wonder if other farms are having similar thoughts? Don’t mean to come off so deep, just thought It might be an interesting perspective from one farmer. Or maybe not...? At any rate thanks for reading it helped just to put it down the words. If I ever go off the radar, yall can probably find me here. Back in the 1990s my oldest cousin bought 20 acres of land in the mountains of upstate Pennsylvania. It has a lake thats loaded with fish, he keeps bees, grows a ton of his own fruits and vegetables, keeps chickens and is self sustained like a muh fucka.He even built his home on this property with his own hands and the help of some amish folks. Hes always been a mentor and an inspiration to me, and has been there for me when my biological father wasnt. Its encouraging to see black folks owning land and able to do their own thing, away from the rat race. Its beautiful up there. Solo road trip west to play a couple shows day one. I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing the Sandhills of Nebraska until yesterday. As Mari Sandoz and Jim Harrison have composed most of my reading the past few months, finding a way to Cheyenne via Northern Nebraska couldn’t have come at a better time. I was lucky enough to make the whole day’s trip without ever setting tire on an interstate and I gotta say the Sandhills are easily among the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. Their beauty is whispered gently in a lonely and old voice and unlike their more aggressive mountain relatives I did not see any tourist traffic nor wealthy villages. If my family was with me I would’ve liked to stay for a month. With so much uncertainty it has been good to see that big parts of the West are still the West. Shoutout to @corkdorkwineco for the grapes @iamchloeavila for the veggies and @dje_dragon for the pan. Tomorrow @banjodave1 and I will actually get on a stage together and play some songs.
