Elsuhant a szél, és a vén fák nyújtózkodva kitárták karjukat. – Talán lesz valami – suttogták. A szél pedig megkopogtatta az ablakokat, és megpattantotta az ajtókat. – Nincs erdő – búgott a kéményben –, nincs eső... Az emberek felébredtek, aztán megfordultak, tovább akartak aludni. – Nincs patak, nincs virágos rét, nincs selyemkendő és nincs pénz se. Erre már az emberek újra kinyitották a szemüket. – Bizony nincs – gondolták. – De miért nincs? A szél jajgatva dúdolt a kéményben: – Nincs legelő, nincs tej, és nincsenek kis csizmák: mert nincs erdő, mert nincs erdő. Az emberek számolni kezdtek. Egy év, két év ... igaz, azóta van a sok baj, mióta nincs erdő, s most már nem mondták, hogy okos dolog volt az erdőt kivágni; csak néztek a sötétségbe, és hallgatták, mond-e még valamit a szél, de a szél már nem mondott semmit. Kilendült a kopár domboldalakra, és megült a vén hagyásfák koronájában. – Én már elhintettem a magot, hintsétek ti is... És amikor a nap felkelt, csillogó kapákon csúsztak el első sugarai, egy locsogó szarka csicseregve vitte meg a hírt az erdei népnek. – Cserr! – kiáltotta. – Halljátok? Ültetik az erdőt. A bagoly álmosan hunyorgott az idegen erdő odvában. – Beszélj értelmesen! Ki ülteti és hol? – Az ember, az ember; amit kivágott. – Majd megnézem magam is, te összevissza cserregsz minden ostobaságot. Amikor leszállt az est, a bagoly elimbolyodott a vén tölgyhöz. – Igaz? – Igaz. Most várom a szelet, hogy mirólunk is lerázza a makkot. Nem tudom, hol csavarog. – Itt vagyok, itt vagyok – zendült meg a szél, – Nem akartam üres kézzel jönni. A régi barátságot meg kell ünnepelni... ma, felhőcskék... – szólt bátran – csak szép lassan... Harvest processions have preserved some of the most authentic pre-christian beliefs in most of rural Europe. This time of the year, after all, was perhaps one of the most important times of the year: crops and grains can be harvested and stored for the winter. And special thanks can be given to the powers and forces who made nature fertile. Contrary to the widespread opinion that after Christianization, no pre-christian customs and traditions survived and continued, there is evidence that this may have been far from true. Anthropologist Sir James Frazer, for example, noted the widespread belief in a ‘Mother of corn, barley or wheat’ throughout rural Europe. This spirit was venerated, respected and given offerings to after the very last sheaf of the year. Another scholar, perhaps one of the most important German scholars on Germanic pagan beliefs, Wilhelm Mannhardt, wrote several studies, papers and books on surviving pre-christian beliefs among rural farmers and pastoralists. It is here, he emphasized, that many pagan beliefs survived and continued. Rather, some beliefs existed parallel, others were recontextualized, in other words, modified into the Christian worldview. Others hybridized with the Christian worldview while they still retained their pagan elements. Mannhardt for example noted the many customs and folklore regarding trees, fields and crops in rural Germany. After the harvest is done there are certain animals associated with the grains, e.g. the goat and the strawbear (Strohbär, Roggenbär, Reisigbär). These animals were believed to have been spirits of the crops, responsible for renewal of the crops, and to multiply the harvest. They were given offerings. In northern Bavaria, for example, the strawbear was symbolically killed by cutting the straw off with a knife. Upon the bears or the goats death, it was believed that renewal of nature can be restored, winter be banished and the soil made fertile. There is anecdotal reference, pointing toward a ritual where the people dressed as the animal in order to revive the soil in spring. - @thewickedgriffin on Instagram
