Warning: hot take (simplified) Yes, climate change is real (duh). But anyone that tells you that the frequency of the wildfires in the West is simply due to climate change is wrong. The climate that’s actually changed is the erasure of Native peoples from traditional roles in managing complex forest ecosystems. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples maintained the health of forest ecosystems through frequent burns and other practices deeply rooted in ecological science. In fact, the forest systems of the west were entirely shaped by managed, low intensity burns. Forests need them - desperately. This speaks to the heart of the colonial mentality : people still somehow believe that Turtle Island was a dangerous wilderness when Europeans first arrived, rather than an exquisitely managed set of interlocked ecosystems, with humans at the core, not as destroyers but as stewards. They can’t imagine the Indigenous as scientists, experts, apex stewards. Everything from the management of bison herds, which spread throughout what’s now Mexico, the US and Canada to the massive forests of the Sierras and Rockies was overseen by human beings - scientists with thousands of years of experimental data and thus a deep awareness of the needs of Nature and how to support those needs. Yes - the climate is changing due to the greed of the continuing industrial era, where extractive economies are prized over the health of humanity. Yes, lack of rainfall and other abnormalities in weather patterns are due to climate change. But by invisibilizing Native wisdom, we only exacerbate the effects of this change. ⚠️ Atenção: as imagens a seguir são do exame de necropsia e podem ser fortes para algumas pessoas. Esse foi um exame anatomopatológico de um golfinho-nariz-de-garrafa (Tursiops truncatus), encontrado sem vida na Praia de Balneário Piçarras (SC), no dia 27 de agosto. As operações foram realizadas pela Univali - Unidade Penha via Projeto de Monitoramento de Praias da Bacia de Santos (PMP-BS). O golfinho era um macho juvenil de 2,25 metros de comprimento total e 124 quilos. Apresentava marcas lineares profundas e paralelas na pele das nadadeiras, compatíveis com emalhe em rede de pesca. A suspeita de morte por afogamento foi confirmada na necropsia. No exame foi possível observar lesões pulmonares, como congestão e edema moderado. Os golfinhos, assim como as aves, as tartarugas e outros mamíferos marinhos possuem respiração pulmonar, ou seja, respiram fora da água. Os animais têm características fisiológicas adaptadas para o ambiente marinho. Alguns conseguem ficar por longos períodos embaixo d’água, mas precisam retornar à superfície e respirar novamente. Por capturarem animais que não são o alvo da pescaria, as redes irregulares e feiticeiras são consideradas uma ameaça à vida marinha. Há leis que regulamentam estas atividades artesanais, porém, cabe à comunidade denunciar e cobrar o cumprimento das normas junto aos órgãos ambientais competentes, como fundações municipais de meio ambiente, Polícia Militar Ambiental e Ibama. El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song “Memories of El Monte” written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins. The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it “El Monte Legion Stadium” From 1945 through the mid 1950’s the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derby’s, and even mini car races. The stadium reached the apex of it’s popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. Art Laboe’s dances at the Legion we’re extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens. By the 1960’s The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events. In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. The stadium was torn down on Friday the 13th 1974. The Union Walk townhome development currently sits at the former site of the stadium at Valley and Ramona Blvd. A small fountain and plaque in front of the development memorializes the history that the Stadium made in EL Monte. - @elmonte.captured on Instagram

Heres a newly renovated William Krisel designed home. (Model 14-A) About 3 - 4 were constructed and easily identified by their distinctive array of open air beams that allows light to drench the front of the home in all directions. 14As were designed with sunwell glass walled bathrooms which act like mini atriums next to the tub to let natural light into the inner parts of the home. They also were designed with sliding glass front doorways once the resident passed through the front patio gate. “Since the lockdowns, elk have been taking over in larger ways. One week for a few days, about 100 elk took over the local high school football field. Ive been noticing a lot more animal activity as I go for a hike at least once a week. Lots of snakes have popped up where I have not seen before. The bunnies are also now free to live without humans trying to capture them. I also went surfing and a baby grey whale jumped up out of the water about 15 feet from me, two times. This was surprising and I caught the wave that came after it jumped both times. The guy I was surfing with said never in his whole life has he seen a baby grey whale jump that close to a surfer. This was arguably the most incredible moment of my life. I would like to note that it is also a privilege to be able to access nature, but one of the biggest positives in my life and people in my community during this lockdown, is that we have been able to connect with nature in more frequent ways. Shutting things down have allowed for priorities to be reset. What is actually important?” . This picture is of the Turnpike Stadium prior to opening in 1965 as a minor league baseball stadium with 10,000 seat capacity. The Fort Worth Cats of the Texas League moved there as the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs, and played there for the next seven years, setting many Texas League attendance records, especially after it expanded to 20,500 seats in 1970. It was built to @mlb specs at the time to attract a major league team. In 1971 the then Washington Senators announced their move to Arlington Texas and the rest is history! Em Pernambuco, a criação clandestina de gado dentro da terra indígena Pankakuru levou o MPF a pedir a apreensão dos animais. Para o MPF, a permanência indevida do rebanho é uma violação dos direitos indígenas ao usufruto exclusivo dos bens naturais da área. A pastagem na área cultivada pelos Pankararu destrói o plantio e inviabiliza o desenvolvimento da agricultura de subsistência. Além disso, gera temor de tentativa de reocupação da área e prejuízo à comunidade. A Justiça Federal concedeu liminar para a apreensão de gado bovino, caprino e outros animais não pertencentes aos indígenas. Na última semana, nove animais foram apreendidos. A destinação é o Centro de Controle de Zoonoses de Serra Talhada. Caso os donos não se manifestem em até cinco dias a partir da data da apreensão, o gado será considerado abandonado e ficará sob responsabilidade do município de Serra Talhada, conforme prevê a legislação municipal. A área localiza-se entre os municípios pernambucanos de Tacaratu, Petrolândia e Jatobá. As apreensões estão sendo feitas mediante ação coordenada entre a Fundação Nacional do Índio (Funai) e a Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF). Na ação civil pública, o MPF argumentou que, desde o início do processo de desintrusão da área, os antigos posseiros, em represália, vêm promovendo ameaças, danos patrimoniais e atentados de cunho racista contra a comunidade e cultura indígena. O processo judicial para reintegração de posse da terra Pankararu teve início em 1993 e a decisão final saiu há cerca de 20 anos, não cabendo mais recurso. Las playas son ecosistemas de la zona costera muy importantes, corresponden a formas de acumulación de materiales como arena, gravas y cantos rodados depositados al lado del mar, generalmente sobre una plataforma de acumulación. La playa se divide en tres partes, la anteplaya, la playa propiamente tal, zona en donde rompen las olas y por último la post playa o playa trasera. En estos ecosistemas ocurren distintas y diversas dinámicas entre el medio marino y terrestre, brindan servicios ecosistémicos, y son hogar de diversas especies de flora y fauna. Dentro de las más representativas e impactadas se encuentran las #avesplayeras, aves que como el Pilpilén, nidifican en la playa. Sus crías, luego de eclosionar se denominan nidifugas, puesto que no se quedan en el nido esperando por su comida, sino que se mueven junto a sus padres, pero estos al no poder volar aun, están expuestos a numerosos impactos como el ataque de perros domésticos que circulan sueltos sin correa, la manipulación de huevos por las personas, la ingesta de basura, y el ser aplastadas por la circulación de vehículos. Esto sumado a la pérdida de sus hábitats, entre los cuales se encuentran playas y humedales costeros cada vez más degradados, fragmentados por los impactos sobre éstos. La circulación de vehículos en playas, dunas y humedales está prohibida en Chile, pero aún existe desconocimiento de cuales son los impactos de circular por estás.
