To eradicate pests in our collection we treat them by placing them in our chest freezer set to minus 20 for 3 days. After freezing the artifacts acclimatize for 24 hours back to room temperature. Then staff get the great pleasure of cleaning them before returning them to storage or exhibit. When City Net started operating another Emergency Quarantine Facility in Orange County, Pastor Kurt Fuller and @TheWarehouseOC wanted to do their part to assist those in need in their community. This was an incredibly emotionally heavy work to create (I am humbled to have been able to support the organizer’s vision on the care and support crew.) Our friends sat in puddles for 45 minutes in the rain, the amount of time #DanielPrude was restrained. They had an incredible amount of trust in the folks around them to keep them safe. In the end we were able to speak to them in soft tones, reassuring them that even though they were covered by the hoods, that we had their back as we brought them blankets to warm them up. We gently told them everything we were doing, letting them know where there were rocks or curbs ahead because we knew they were relying on us for safety when they could not rely on themselves. And in the end we offered them solace with a hug if they wanted one.(I believe they all did.) I had the honor of holding on to Paul. TBH at first it was mom instinct to want to provide comfort, and didn’t realize how much I needed it in return. 😢❤️✊🏼 To me, when white folks say they want to feel safe and they equate that to having police and respond with fear of losing safety, it’s understandable why they are responding from that fear. The challenge before us (as in white folks who recognize the dire need to expunge racist systems) is to communicate the community-wide desire for safety & not causing harm- and how that we can create a new system that might be different from what they’re used to, but it would in the end be better for everyone. (Go read about the history of EMT ambulance services for a perfect example of what we’re talking about) Our shared humanity should compel us to care for each-other as we would want to be. Our only challenge will be fighting the powers that benefit from things as they are, like the officers who just had to drive through the demonstration to assert dominance. This is why the accompanying state-level demands for legislation are so important. Cariol’s law is in honor of an officer who intervened on another officer giving an illegal choke hold. Daniel’s Law would redirect where support would come from. And we must stop the use of chemical weapons against protestors. One of our volunteers shared about her experience: Had my first volunteer experience at the Food Bank today- FUN! FUN! I sorted produce with a group of 9 others. It was similar to vol work I’ve done in the past- sorting thru boxed donations, making sure any bad, inedible, or rotten food is separated, placing fruit items In one box, vegetables in another box, and “bad” produce into a separate bin (it does go out to get used in a different way than feeding people). It was SO MUCH FUN! The people there provided masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and everyone was socially distanced, a very safe environment. They even had a fun 80s playlist going, stuff I hadn’t heard in awhile- it was an upbeat, positive vibe. If you are looking for an easy, fun, meaningful way to make a difference for those struggling w/ food insecurity or waste, I HIGHLY recommend volunteering for a few hours. Thanks, Michele! Multiple distributions took place yesterday in Blue Hills and the Dockyard areas of Providenciales. COVID-19 has certainly complicated the logistics of distribution and the desperation caused by a growing food insecurity makes it hard to enforce social distancing and controlled lines. Unfortunately this often means we must stop the distribution and move on to prevent unsafe conditions. It is hard to drive away from those in need, but it is the only choice when conditions require. Much more controlled distribution to Turks and Caicos Islanders and residents of Blue Hills. Lots of hard working middle class folks, without income from the closed tourism industry, that are doing their best for their families during this crisis. Here’s an update for you! Since planting took place in early June, more than 400 lbs. of fresh veggies have been harvested from our #OurOshawa City gardens and donated to @ftndurham. Through the Adopt-a-Garden program, the Oshawa Garden Club and @durhammastergardeners have transformed nine of the annual flowerbeds on the north side of Oshawa City Hall into vegetable gardens. The mothers who are receiving the benefits of the Wordens green thumbs expressed their gratitude for the bounty. We all appreciate it more than words can describe. Times are very rough right now, and the boxes make a huge difference for our families, said one mother from the Kids Thrive program. Each box contains an assortment of organic vegetables, some of which are new to these families. One mother shared that she brought home vegetables that she had never even heard of before, but said, I cannot wait to learn how to make/prepare some of the stuff, and a peer echoed this, stating, It will be fun finding new things to cook. By getting good food into the hands of our most vulnerable we are providing that support they need to sustain their families through this crisis. A big thank you to Takeda Cares virtual volunteer teams last week who gathered virtually in support of our Home Delivery Program. This was a fantastic week of virtual events organized by @Buildingimpact and will help us provide healthy foods such as fresh produce and pantry staples for our Home Delivery Program. Our Home Delivery Program provides healthy food to over 370 low-income Cambridge residents who are unable to access traditional food pantries due to illness and/or disability and are high risk for COVID-19. Success! Hong Kong officials have seized a historic 26 tonnes of shark fins! An estimated 38,500 endangered sharks, valued at $1.1 million USD were recovered inside a pair of shipping containers from Ecuador, revealed on Wednesday. Unfortunately, 90% of the shark fins were from protected species including 31,000 thresher sharks and 7,500 silky sharks. Customs officers arrested the importer, however, the 57-year-old man has been granted bail pending further investigation. South China Morning Post reported, “two containers arrived from Ecuador within 10 days of each other in January, but the huge haul was only discovered when customs officers opened the containers at their Kwai Chung cargo examination compound on April 28 and May 4.” Aside from the two Ecuador consignments, customs officers this year had already seized 15 tonnes of shark fins worth HK$5.4 million and made two arrests.
