Reflections on a lake As I walk under this starry sky, wandering in the unknowns, With no clue whats happening in my life, I walk towards a lake, sit there and cry. As I wipe my tears a little, I see these reflections come into sight. Its 1879,I see a child giving food to his servants son without the knowledge of his family because they wouldnt approve their friendship. But for them friendship had no status. 1914, World War 1, a husband is promising his wife that he will come back soon. Theres hope in her eyes and theres fear. Fear that he might not return the same. 1931, theres a woman, sobbing. Why wasnt I enough ? She screams, Why did he cheat on me? she continues. 1945, a mother, mourning over her son whom she lost in an accident. Wondering how she is going to live the rest of her life without him. 1972, a boy, waiting for his boyfriend to reach the lake. They are going to elope, to a far away land as their love is beyond peoples understanding in the town. 1996, a father, dreaming about how he is going to earn money and his family would never have to face any inconvenience again. 2001, an old Muslim man is being beaten because of 9/11 attack. He is begging for them to have mercy and leave him, they dont know he suffered a loss in that attack too, not that they care. 2003, a little girl grasps several breaths as she cries, while her parents burry her bunny. The light of her life is no more. 2015, a couple is on their first date. They have butterflies in their stomachs, thinking how every heartbreak they had, was leading them to end up with each other. 2020, I see my own reflection, with tears in my eyes shouting that Im a failure. Trying to find the will to live and try again. When all these stories tell me that there is so much more to life than success and failure. This lake has seen it all. It shrieks all the emotions; misery, joy, dreams, failures, hopes, fears, innocence and wickedness. It might have started right there and then: the shirt, the rolled-up sleeves, the rounded balls of his heels slipping in and out of his frayed espadrilles, eager to test the hot gravel path that led to our house, every stride already asking, Which way to the beach? This summers 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵.» 💛 ————— I’m pausing my chronological storytelling posts because today is a very big day. Today it’s a very important day. On today of 37 years ago, July 8th 1983, Oliver arrived at the Perlamans villa as that summer’s houseguest. And the rest is cinematic history. This very pretty detail was shown in the opening title sequences of the film, and it’s something that makes me love it even more. Everything about it is just.. perfect. My parents told me that on the day I was born, they could see bits of ash floating in the air as they drove to the Corvallis hospital. The day before, July 22, 1980, Mount St. Helens had filled the sky with a smaller, follow-up eruption to that May’s infamous blast, pushing smoke and debris into the heavens. I knew this was part of my birth story, but I could never picture Oregon’s pristine fresh air with cinders floating through it. Now, as I write this from my home in Northeast Portland, while we hold the distinction of having the worst air quality of any city in the entire world because one million acres of our beloved state is burning all around us, I can see it with my own eyes.
