Yesterday saw the successful dehorning of a #WhiteRhino on Somkhanda Game Reserve, in partnership with @wildlandssa, @africa4africa_ the Emvokweni Community Trust (ECT) and Wildlife ACT. This forms part of a collaborative effort to dehorn #rhino populations as an effective and harmless tool in #antipoaching processes. While good rhino monitoring, #dehorning and anti-poaching measures remain an effective tool in combating the situation on the ground, it is vital that we remember the importance of biological management, as well as community education, engagement programs and capacity building for a sustainable future. We will be sharing more rhino stories throughout the week and encouraging the public to support this work via the #WildlifeRangerChallenge. This elephant bull was successfully desnared by the joint CSL-DNPW team on Sunday. We are grateful to all our donors who enable us to complete this important wildlife rescue work. With a team member critically wounded by a rhino, @biglifeafrica Ranger Parmeres Jacob Leiyan knew what to do. He also knew he had very little time to do it. The rhino was still nearby while Parmeres used his cap to pack the wound, then he applied pressure to stop the bleeding. ⛑Theres not much time left this Financial Year to help train Rangers working on the frontline of conservation - visit the link in our bio to support Ranger training. 🦏The rhino had surprised the team while they were on patrol in Kenya’s Chyulu Hills area, with one Ranger gored through both legs before he could get up a tree. Parmeres drew on his @lead_ranger critical-bleed-control training and a lot of courage to save a life. @sheldricktrust were able to provide a helicopter for the emergency evacuation. Mercifully, one less name to add to the Honour Roll of Fallen Rangers. Thanks to those who have given so much already to @thingreenlinefoundation EOFY training appeal. Parmeres didn’t hesitate and his actions saved a life. At least five other lives have been saved thanks to dedicated LEAD Ranger-trained men and women, and thanks to our supporters. @lead_ranger training is an initiative of @thingreenlinefoundation , International Anti Poaching Foundation, and Ranger Campus Foundation. A few years ago this sight was uncommon and frowned on. How in such a short time we have come to accept this costly and invasive practice as a measure to protect. Another world rhino day has come and gone as we approach 10 000 and counting animals lost in the last decade. The demand is still high and increasing . Black Market value of horn still high and increasing. Security costs going up. The value of a live rhino is all but gone making them a liability to own which is a major issue with over 50% now in private hands in South Africa. Suspected poachers still get bail or skip it. Conviction rates and sentences are low or none due to ineffective and corrupt justice system. There is no deterrent. The Cites international ban is not working. There needs to be other solutions. However in the meantime we soldier on. Kudos to those state and private landowners who soldier on, protect and conserve. The huge financial contribution private rhino landowners in South Africa make to securing their rhinos is lost on many. Black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) and a gang of meerkats. With ideal habitat for both species Mokala falls right on the boundary of the Nama-Karoo and the Savanna biomes and one of the key conservation objectives of the park is to conserve the interface of two biomes. The wildebeest’s eyesight is it’s least developed sense so having these meerkats with their incredible vision combined with its own enhanced hearing and sense of smell means they’ve got a lot of the bases covered. 4+ YEARS OF SUCCESS FOR RHINO⠀ ⠀ A small population of critically endangered Eastern Black rhinoceros live in Big Life’s area of operation, nestled deeply in the Chyulu Hills. These 8 individuals are part of an elusive population once thought to be extinct, prior to their ‘re-discovery’ in the ’90s by community rangers who started noticing tracks. Since then, Big Life has worked tirelessly to protect this important population, one of the few remaining unmanaged, unfenced, and genetically independent rhino populations left in East Africa. ⠀ ⠀ Despite their importance, these rhinos are threatened daily by poaching, human encroachment, and habitat loss. Tragically, between 2013 and 2015, 6 rhinos were lost to poachers. Out in the bush on their daily wilderness walks the smaller elephants will sometimes look to their keepers for guidance and comfort. They lift up their trunk to smell and suckle on anything from part of their t-shirt, fingers or trouser leg. Their trunks actually have “fingers” which they will use to grasp or hold on to objects. This is almost like the equivalent of a toddler grabbing your hand or holding your t-shirt for comfort. Wire snares set by mostly bush meat poachers are very indiscriminate. This young giraffe had one but it must have broken free from one possibly set for a smaller antelope. It did stay on for long enough to cause severe infection. Only on closer inspection was it evident the wire snare had broken loose. The infected abcess/wound was lanced, cleaned out and he should make a full recovery. Giraffe are not the easiest animals to get down but the team did well to rope this little chap and keep him down by sitting on his neck. The legs are roped as a kick can cause damage, even from a youngster like this. Snares are not common at @andbeyondphinda. But common and on the increase across Zululand as communities and people start to feel the pinch of the ecomomic fall out from COVID, growing population and unemployment. - @simonjamesnaylor on Instagram

The STS Team in Mozambique race to the rescue of a pride of Lions... A breeding pride of 3 females, one male and a cub escaped from the Greater Lebombos Conservancy in Mozambique and found themselves in community land. By the time we had been notified of their situation they had already killed 5 cows and were causing panic amongst villages. Without the intervention of our team, this pride was surely going to become a target for poachers or the local community were going to take action to defend themselves and their livestock, which would be fatal for the Lions and put human lives at risk. We had to get there quick! We managed to track the Lions and call in a helicopter so that we could dart them from the air. All 5 animals were successfully immobilised from the chopper and our ground teams collected them on the 4x4s and took them back to the safety of their Conservancy. While the operation was in motion we found a group of 9 poachers with 12 dogs, 300 meters from the pride with the intention to kill the animals. So our action came at just the right time! Why Trophy Hunting Does NOT Help Conservation Advocates of trophy hunting love to call themselves conservationists and always make the claim the trophy hunting helps wildlife by bringing much needed funds to impoverished communities, distributing bush meat, and controlling wildlife populations. The claims are highly misleading, and also they are just bullshit. Sorry. If you love animals you don’t shoot them for sport. But let’s examine why it’s bullshit: 1. Wildlife populations up for trophy hunting are not in imbalance with the natural world, and the need to regulate them through culling or hunting is due to human encroachment on habitat 2. Trophy hunting is not a population management tool. We are talking about killing a small number of highly desirable animals, thus disrupting the population and gene pool. 3. Less than 5% of revenue from trophy hunts goes to local communities on average. The vast majority of their income goes to government agencies, outfitters and individuals located in national capitals and overseas. See slide 3. 4. Trophy hunting has been in practice for decades, with conservation claims dating as far back as the 1920’s. (The only exception of Kenya which outright banned trophy hunting in 1977.) If trophy hunting has already been helping conservation for decades, why are wildlife populations still plummeting? Lion trophy hunting is hardly new, and yet with all of these hunts “helping” lion conservation, wild lion populations steadily decline. In fact, The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which monitors animal populations, reports that the number of lions in five populations in Tanzania fell by two-thirds from 1993 to 2014. Watching wildlife is one of our favorite things in Africa. We get a lot of questions about safaris and how does it work and why animals don’t eat humans. So, in game reserves wild animals are used to safari cars and as long as you follow some rules - you’re safe. When you stay in a game lodge, you most probably will have safaris twice a day and depending on how lucky you are - you get to see some wildlife. Madikwe game reserves hosts a lot of animals including a big five, luckily we have witnessed some incredible things - a giraffe drinking (it’s a pretty rare thing to see), a lion walking in front of the car without being bothered at all and hyena cubs coming out of their shelter. This rustic Luwi Bush Camp stands in a small grove of mahogany trees and has great views over a floodplain to the Luwi riverbed beyond. Although the camp is away from the main Luangwa River, there are two permanent lagoons here, each with an impressive population of hippo and crocodile. This camp houses only 5 chalets which means that individual attention is tailored for each guests’ experience. Each chalet is en-suite. The main area of the camp is comprised of a thatched roof and sandy floor, housing the bar and library. Other communal areas can be found dotted around under trees in the shade. On Friday, the team rescued a male adult giraffe that had a metal rod in the left hind leg. The AKTF team joined by other organisations including, KWS Vet Dr Limo and his team,David Sheldrick Trust Team, Mara Conservancy Rangers (Oloololo rangers & Angama station rangers) worked as one team and managed to rescue the giraffe. The Rangers will be meeting the community elders briefly for the purpose of enhancing and strengthening community engagement in protecting the wildlife within the community areas. There are several resident giraffe families in the community areas that need to be protected as the problem has been reoccurring. OREGON: after a long 19 year wait to finally hunt Pronghorn in my home state, the dream finally became reality. My parents moved us to live in Arizona when I was 8... I was reluctant because I didnt want to leave friends and family. But being 8 didnt give me much say in the matter we were moving and like always parents do know best. After living there for 3 or so years I fell in love with not only my new home but its people and its natural beauty unlike anything else in the world. We then moved back to the East Coast for some brutal winters. I told myself Id come back one day...today is that day. I decided to take the train, yes the train...a total of 51 hours by train and another 2.5 hours by bus. Ive always had the travel bug (you can blame my parents for that one). Given everything going on in our country I wish everyone could see what I have seen. The beauty of this amazing country, something that we take for granted and completely forget about in our cell phone obsessed lives, rants about things we dont one hundred percent understand and fighting every day with people we should be helping. Im not saying get on the next train and take it all in like I did, but how about take a look out your windows and just look, take it all in, see what beauty you walk past every day whether it be the ocean in the distance, the fall foliage coming around the corner or the park that becomes wonderland in the wintertime when dusted with snow. Leopards can be tricky to spot! With incredibly effective camouflage and a preference for hunting at night, leopards are usually the most difficult of safari animals to see in the wild. One of our favourite places to spot leopard has to be in the South Luangwa in the east of Zambia. This national park combines pristine dense habitat with reliable water sources to make the perfect balance for a remote wildlife hotspot. It’s also known as the Valley of the Leopard – an appropriate reference to its large concentration of elusive, spotted big cats. Although we can never guarantee a specific wildlife sighting, we’ve yet to have an experience beaten by the South Luangwa when it comes to sighting leopard.
