What are you spinning today? 🎧 🌟⁣ ⁣ —⁣ ⁣ My favorite artists all have one thing in common: the guts to reinvent themselves outside the creative formula that brought them success. U2 did this in a huge way in 1991, when they abandoned the impassioned roots rock of the Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum for the industrial dance beats of Achtung Baby. It was a risk that nearly fractured the band entirely, and continues to divide their fanbase. The record ultimately produced some of their biggest singles, and spawned a massive world tour that scrutinized media, religion, the music industry, and global politics via audiovisual overload.⁣ ⁣ But in the sparkling chaos of neon lights, glossy black shades, and private jets, U2’s weirdest record—my lifelong favorite—was born. Zooropa was originally conceived as an EP of discarded tracks from Achtung Baby, but the band found something unshakably compelling about the demos, like the face of the child cosmonaut scrawled on the cover. Here was a chance to push their new direction even further. Down the rabbit hole they went.⁣ ⁣ The great philosopher Questlove posits that many creatives do their best work sleep deprived, as delirium breaks down the filters that shut down one’s wilder ideas in the light of day. (While I can’t say I endorse this method, I will admit that I have found it to be true in my own work.) And so it was with Zooropa, recorded during U2’s European tour—stepping offstage at 11 pm, the band would fly home to Dublin to record before jetting off to their next city the following day to do it all over again. ⁣ ⁣ The result is nearly unrecognizable as a U2 record. The Edge, Brian Eno, and Flood stack layers of throbbing distortion over a haze of advertising slogans and Bono’s ruminations on fame and mortality, capped with a haunting Johnny Cash vocal. It’s beautiful, uneven, off-kilter, and a celebration of imperfection and experimentation on a level the band never approached again.
