Este é o cenário atual, porém, em 1922, comemorando o centenário da independência brasileira, a pintora Georgina de Albuquerque apresentou uma pintura única e um tanto quanto questionadora. “Sessão do Conselho de Estado” é uma tela a óleo que apresenta como marco da independência o ato da assinatura da mesma, realizada pela então Princesa Regente Dona Leopoldina. Esta versão de marco histórico sem a presença de D. Pedro I e sem o famoso grito “Independência ou Morte” eternizado por Pedro Américo apresenta na verdade a nova Imperatriz como a verdadeira heroína do Brasil. “Sessão do Conselho de Estado configurava uma posição de defesa da “nova mulher” ainda que por meio da associação à figura do passado Imperial.” – Ana Paula Cavalcanti Simioni. I photographed the (now ex-)Labour leader when he was on the campaign trail, but when I turned up there was no space at all to shoot in the cafe he had suggested as our location. So I went across the road and begged the manager of a mirror shop to let us shoot inside. Not the easiest of locations to control light, but thankfully I always carry some spare bits of cloth in my bag. Making a portrait with someone is an honor. On a planet inhabiting billions of people, there is beauty in the reality of two people specifically knowing each other exist. That connection is what I love about portraits. I think the best and most frustrating part is that there will be so many times where you don’t have it. But when you have it, it’s so special. Mark and I spoke briefly about his role in Infinitely Polar Bear. I think it’s important to let people know when their art moves you. In 1918 businessman and community leader Frederick Madison Roberts earned the title of Californias first Black elected assemblyman. Roberts defeated his opponent who ran his campaign with nothing but racial slurs against him. Instead of race-baiting, Roberts ran his campaign on real policy. His candidacy was built on securing voting rights for Black males. Through his work he was able to pass a number of civil rights mesaures in the areas of public accomodations and education. He also sponsored legislation to establish UCLA, expanded the use of school textbooks, and proposed civil rights and anti-lynching measures. Frederick Madison Roberts won many elections, serving a total of 16 years in the state assembly. Another interesting fact about Frederick Madison Roberts is that he was the first recorded Black graduate of LA High School! Shoutout to all the Romans out there! When I first met Stuart Cornfeld I was very intimated. I’d heard they’d based Les Grossman in “Tropic Thunder” on him. Well it was a quick let-down when I didn’t get any kind of explosive outburst. Over the years Stuart produced several projects with me and Dan Schimpf. I learned so much from him and felt lucky for every day we spent working together. He was not, to my surprise, even remotely like Les Grossman or any stereotype of what you might imagine a Hollywood producer to be. He, along with Ben Stiller, fostered an infectiously creative, comfortable and loving environment at Red Hour Productions. He deeply loved films and art and spent an incredible lifetime making some of my favorites. Unbelievably smart and as authentic as you could be. I’m sure he would’ve hated this message. So I’m sorry Stuart for any sap. But it’s true. He was a legend. Thank you. Love you. RIP. The incredible list of iconic films and unforgettable characters he’s played certainly looms large before meeting him, as it does with any A-list celebrity. But that’s par for the course in this game. No, the terror came in when after doing all the usual setup and lighting test shots with everything working perfectly, as soon as he stepped on set and I tried to start shooting, the camera wouldn’t work! Nothing. It was completely seized up after working just fine minutes before. At first you try to play it off and make small talk while trying to fiddle with it and get it to work, but eventually it’s pretty clear that it’s not working. Not a great feeling with any subject, but when you have Travis Bickle / Vito Corleone / Jake La Motta and of course the stepdad in “Meet The Fockers” staring at you like you’re a putz, you start to feel like one. Of course that is all me projecting. He was very nice and understanding and said “I’ll go back up to my office and just let me know when you have it figured out, and I’ll come back down”. Which I was very grateful for. I would normally have 2 cameras just for this very occasion but on this day I had rented a bigger badder one, because, well it was Bobby! So my assistant sprinted out to the rental place which luckily was only a few blocks away. We got a new camera that worked and did the shoot and all was well. Anger, too. What if instead of being a participant in these reactionary emotions we instead choose in this moment to be a means to ease the suffering and stress of strangers and friends alike? Today, make it a point to let the people in your life know why they’re special to you. Smile at strangers, or if you’re wearing your mask, give a friendly wave and cheerful hello. Ask your server how their day is going. Stick a few quarters in an expired parking meter. Hold the door for someone. Give honest compliments wherever and whenever you can. Be a caring and sincere listener. Let someone cut in front of you in the grocery line or in traffic. Buy a homeless person a meal. The possibility are as many as the number of people you encounter. Manly P. Hall (March 18, 1901-August 29, 1990) Dr. Stephan Hoeller recently visited PRS to record a lecture in Halls honor on the importance of cultivating ones own philosophy of life. In his work My Philosophy of Life, Hall wrote A mature philosophy of life originates in a natural thoughtfulness. To live without thinking is to fail in the proper use of the powers and faculties with which we have been endowed. To think without applying our thoughts to the conduct of our affairs is to substitute mere intellectualism for intelligence. It is seldom possible to perfect a personal philosophy without study, through which we become familiar with the deepest and noblest convictions of mankind. We must also call upon daily experience, by which we can convince ourselves of the reality and integrity of certain basic principles ever present and forever true. Beyond both study and experience are the internal faculties of the soul, and these must bestow final certitude upon our convictions. If, therefore, we live simply and wisely, seeking first the improvement of our inner lives, reserving an open heart and mind, we shall be guided and directed according to our needs and understanding. Last selfportrait, always a mystery For a long time, this painting was the only self-portrait of which it was established that Rembrandt had painted it in his year of death. In his face expression you can clearly see that also Rembrandt knew that his time was coming. The finish of this painting is minimal, and an obvious thought would be that the self-portrait was left unfinished with Rembrandt’s death. On this day on June 13, 1774, the Rhode Island legislature passed a law banning the importation of slaves into the colony, becoming the first of Britain’s North American colonies to do so. This law was one of the first anti-slavery laws in the United States. Before this, there were 4 different ports of entry of enslaved Africans in the transatlantic trade located in Rhode Island. However, leading merchants, including John Brown and George DeWolf, continued to engage in the slave trade. One of the leading figures in Rhode Island behind abolitionism was Moses Brown, John Brown’s brother. The Brown family owed much of their wealth to their mercantile success in the slave trade in Rhode Island. Becoming deeply disturbed by the plight of the slaves in America, in 1774 he converted from Baptist to Quaker, and threw himself upon the abolitionist cause. In 1787, he helped pass a statute forbidding anyone to outfit slave voyages in Rhode Island ports. In 1789, Brown helped found the Providence Society for Abolishing the Slave Trade to help enforce the anti-slave trade legislation. Moses Brown’s house was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Providence was on route from New Bedford, where escaping slaves arrived by ship, to Fall River and then Rhode Island. Moses taught his son, Obadiah, to actively oppose slavery and he did just that, sponsoring free blacks to help them find employment, helped with their finances, and backed them up in legal disputes. Rhode Island eventually abolished all slavery and emancipated all slaves in 1843, with the adoption of the new state constitution. Pictures: 1. Moses Brown 2. He taught us how to fly. He led dead poets. He was the therapist we didn’t know we needed. He clowned around when we were down and was always there to patch things up. He made genies and magic feel real and he was probably our generations first exposure to cross dressing and lord was he fabulous. Every movie he starred in and every character he played during that golden age showed us how to show up fully, love passionately, to give second chances, to put family first and to fight to get through to people even when it seems like a lost cause. He was an brilliant actor and a hilarious comedian, but he was more than that. All he ever did was use his gifts to make the world a better place. Then a day came when the world was too much for him, and alone one cold morning he took his own life. Just like Anthony Bourdain, Chester Bennington, Avicii, and Chris Cornell, too many of the men who inspire us and light the way lose the will to live and struggle to find that light within themselves. In a world where it seems the very worst of men make decisions for the rest of us, I find myself increasingly focused on looking at human issues from the perspective of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. If even millionaires who have accomplished all of their dreams want to die, I can only imagine how many countless souls in the world are struggling to survive. There’s a quote I like that says ‘be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle that you know nothing about’ but I would take it one step further. Love fearlessly and courageously cause nothing in this life is promised. In a world that obsesses over looks and status and self protection, and from a generation that says “do less” I would challenge us to practice radical love, radical compassion, and radical patience for those around us. It’s been said that the smallest amount of love could change someone’s day, and perhaps now we can take that a step further and recognize that any act of love in this day and age could literally save a life. So here’s to one of the greatest of his generation and may we honor his memory by being messengers of those little acts love. - @dustinthomasxo on Instagram

Technicolour Dickens - Technicolour Dickens - This ones a great example of the success of the technique I used for the skin of Dickens. When the images were all taken the main light source was often a sky-light and because of this the forehead is often overexposed. Using the skin tone and texture of Dickens descendents I was able to get tone into the colourised images.
