📸A LITTLE BIT ABOUT… The original building on the Palais Theatre site was a dance hall, Palais de Danse. It also screened pictures during the early silent movie era. This arch truss building was moved over to the site next door and became the Palais de Danse and a new similar structure was built on the site as a picture theatre. This image is during WW1 and features a banner advertising BUY WAR BONDS. DROP A BOMB ON THE HUN. Today I turn 30. Here’s a picture of me Kristine took in Yosemite a few weeks ago, unshowered, unshaven, shot on a 40 year old camera onto 35mm film, in about as raw of a “me” state as you get. There are lines on my face that weren’t there 3 years ago and at least double the grays in my hair than there were last year. I’m wearing a Kaldi’s Coffee t-shirt that’s 16 years old and a hat to wrangle the longer hair I grew out last year after a decade of a heavily pomaded comb-over which has started to recede slightly to match my father’s mean widow’s peak. We had just finished a massive hike during Kristine’s first trip to Yosemite, which is undeniably one of the most magical public spaces in America, and I’m mega stoked that we survived without issues, had an amazing turkey sandwich lunch at the top of a waterfall, and we’re about to go drink beers in the freezing cold river. I’ve learned a lot over the years, a thousand times more than I ever learned in school, and the last few years have taught me to pump the brakes and appreciate the ride because once you get to the destination, perhaps not today or next month or next year but inevitably, you’ll be asking what’s next? Was this really the end of the road all along? Ferris Bueller had something right, that’s for sure. I like my grays and the lines in my face and my teeth that aren’t so white anymore after three decades of life. I may feel differently about them five, or ten, or twenty years from now but today we’re on good terms. Thank you all for everything and anything at all over the years. It’s been a wild journey and I like this somewhat battered version of me better than the babyfaced lad from age 25 and even more so than the boy aged 20. To quote a man who I have grown to respect significantly less over the years (Hunter S. Thompson), “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! It has been such a challenging time for the hospitality industry. Our thoughts are with you all. We have been fortunate to be able to support the federal government public health and safety initiative through housing repatriation guests, something we are very proud of. This also gave us a fantastic opportunity to provide for our dear staff members, suppliers and keep creating memorable experiences for our guests. During this time, our team at Stamford Plaza Melbourne have been keeping busy. We served over 5500 meals and accommodated over 3500 special dietary requirements. We also supported our local food suppliers as we purchased over 10000 kg of seasonal fruit and vegetables, 5000 kg of fresh meat and poultry, over 25000 eggs as well as other local produce. It highlights the core of what our business is about, being able to connect with people in different ways. Many thanks for your kind consideration and support during this time.
