Marathon training? Completed it mate! This is a bit of a geeky post, but it’s also one that advocates for an individualised and adaptable approach to training. Those that have read my articles on Fast Running will know that my approach to training has always been low volume and high intensity; this approach is in stark contrast to the conventional wisdom of miles, miles, miles. I’m sure many of you will have been told you’re doing it all wrong, or that everything needs to change, right? Indeed, you might think that #marathontraining would put my mantra to bed, but, as with all things in life, I believe that it’s all about relativity and proportionality.   Moreover, rapid change, whether it relates to the frequency, intensity, time or type of your training, will always cause you more problems than solutions! The foundation of my training week for the marathon has been my three pillars: 1)   #Longrun (averaging 20 miles in the past 4 months); 2)  #Tempo (building up to between 9 and 15 miles); and, 3)  5k / 10k session (4-7 miles). I supplement my ‘three pillar’ runs with 3 to 4 steady pace runs typically between 9 and 14 miles (at 6:00 and 6:10 per mile). Hence, I have averaged 6.5 runs per week (always keeping 1 total rest day) with an average distance of 11.5 miles. As I started to feel strong, I switched to a four-week rotational training programme, which progressed over time, as shown below: Week 1 (75 to 85 miles) - Focusing on speed: 2 x interval sessions, 1 x tempo, 1 x long run (18 miles) and 2 x steady runs. Week 2 (80 to 92 miles) - Increasing the distance: 1 x interval session, 1 x tempo, 1 x long run (19 to 21 miles), 2 x steady runs and 1 x easy run. Week 3 (88 to 100 miles) - Focus on distance: 1 x interval sessions, 1 x tempo, 1 x long run (20 to 23 miles), 2 x steady runs and 1 x easy run. Week 4 – (75 to 80 miles) – Offload: 1 x tempo, 1 x long run (20 miles), 4 x steady runs. The intensity approach has not been without problems, but this, in part, is to be expected when you increase your mileage. The proof is ultimately in the pudding, but, however I fair, I know that lower volumes suit my body and my work constraints. - @raverunner93 on Instagram

“Good thing I didn’t accomplish all my goals yet because then what would I do tomorrow?” - @alexipappas I shot my shot, gimpy left leg and all. Enough about the numbers though. They never tell the whole story. This weekend was far more memorable because of everyone I got to run and spend time with. This experience elevated the often selfish and individualistic aspect of running to something more than just me and my goals. I was on pace and with the pack until about mile 19, and then had to solo drag my leg through the the last windy 10k, even though aerobically it felt super comfortable the whole way. But being in that group of women until then was such a cool experience. There are few things more inspiring and empowering than being among strong women fearlessly committing and bringing their dreams to life. About 30 of us were all gunning for the last chance OTQ. We all tucked in and went for it from the start. I’d never been so calm before when something I wanted SO badly was on the line. There was no time to be nervous and no place for backing down. It was a collective “let’s do this” energy. Pack mentality at its best; it scooped me up like a wave and I rode it out as long as I could. All of us there made it seem so doable, not at all crazy, and I really believed it might finally be my day. The odds were against me but I was ready to fight. Having barely been able to run in the couple weeks before the race, and not knowing how long my leg would hold up, I saw every mile as a gift. It was also so fun was having Boulder friend and teammate @ashleylmena next to me for the first bit! Early miles flew by chatting, mid miles the sound of feet synchronously moving forward. The support for each other by sharing extra water and fluids, and pointing out bumps, pothole and turns was awesome. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats. We all may have finished with a range of times, but I am proud and excited to be a part of the future of women’s distance running after days like this. Although I won’t be in Atlanta for the Trials, I know I belong up there, and will bring that confidence with me next time. Over the years I have been so grateful to my body for helping me achieve many things, however by far the best accomplishments ever are my children. As a runner, I know my body well and sensed that something special was happening before any test could tell. Nothing can top the love a Mother feels, and that begins even before we can hold or see the baby. Motherhood changes and enhances everything. Long before I dreamed of athletic goals, I dreamt of being a Mother. It is by far my most important role and will always be. Nothing comes before them and I will always fight hard for their wellbeing and to ensure they grow up loved and supported into the best human beings they can possibly be. Raph thinks that mum’s have (M)agical powers; we can find things when they lose them, fix things, comfort and sense when they are not feeling right or most (M)agical of all, we know when they have been up to Mischief! In truth, it is the honour of being a Mum that is truly (M)agical and gives us the strength to do more and be better - for them. The power and strength of the love and pride you feel as a Mother is (M)agical. Isla pretends to be too grown up for Magic, but in truth needs a (M)agical Mum more than ever and my life goal is to always be the best Mum I can possibly be for both of them. I am so happy that Nike are recognizing Mums in this way and doing everything to support athletes’ Motherhood journeys. I think being able to run each day helps me to be a nicer person and a better mum. Certainly being able to run through my pregnancy helped me stay mentally and physically healthy throughout and helped us all cope with the birth better. 🎉Birthday Miles 26.2 🎉 . . . My goal was 20 miles but I felt good and strong, so I kept going and going. This is my first marathon ever, so Im currently on cloud nine. I am overwhelmed with emotions because I never thought I could run this far or run it under 5 hours. A huge thank you to our supporter Lorna Stanger, from Caithness, for raising an incredible £5,142 to help people living with cancer find their best way through. Lorna endured a jaw-dropping duathlon, running and cycling 755-miles over five days - starting from her home, running from Thurso to Inverness and cycling the famous North Coast 500. Wow! 😮 The original plan of running back to Thurso after cycling the North Coast 500 had to be changed, due to a knee injury. Determined to finish the challenge as planned, Lorna ran from Inverness to Thurso covering 112 miles in one day, only two weeks after completing the duathlon 🚲 🏃‍♀️ Covering the 755 miles of remote landscape, Lorna certainly wasnt alone. She was cheered on by friends, family and car horns tooting in support. Lorna is pictured here in our Macmillan greens: Wearing my Macmillan t-shirt made a huge difference. This week we chat with @sgollishruns, one of Canada’s most decorated competitive runners. Sasha opens up about the impact her parents had on her childhood and ultimately her decision to quit her job to pursue a career as a professional runner. At an early age, Sasha grew up on a healthy diet of sports, which included field hockey, cross country running, nordic skiing, downhill skiing, swimming, water polo, and track and field. By the time she entered the University of Toronto, Sasha fell out of love with running and ultimately applied to the University of Western to pursue a degree in Engineering. Thankfully, Sasha would return to the sport and hasn’t looked back! We’ll also cover Sasha’s incredible running resume, which includes her dominating performance at the 2015 CIS Championships, her views on women in sports, and the truly inspiring work she’s doing in the community to uplift women. It’s pretty freaking satisfying to PR your 5k in the middle of peak training for an ultra marathon as you finish your highest monthly mileage ever- 255.2 miles. 🙌🏻 Last night I was driving home from karate with my oldest son who has been going every single day since the gym reopened and I told him I was proud of him for all the work he was putting in. Karate is hard, you guys, and you have to learn Korean on top of everything else. Anyways- he started asking me more about running and I told him that I have had more bad workouts than good, horrible races where I never wanted to do it again, and failure to succeed when I thought I was there. But I’ve never given up hope that I can become a better runner than I was when I ran my first half marathon 5 years ago- and I’ve got up every day and kept going. That’s what he has to do to become a black belt- practice = mastery! I look at where I was 5 years ago, even 2 years ago and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I’m not the fastest, never will be and never claimed to be...but I’m out there setting new goals for myself and trying to be a better runner than I was. (Obviously it’s an unofficial PR, but it hurt everywhere and my lungs were on fire- when I finished before the cooldown I stopped and thought I was going to puke on the side of the road 😂) 2 up, 5 x 200’s, 5k, 2 down. 🇳🇴🔥24 h in Hell🔥🇳🇴 Aldrig, aldrig førr har jeg slitet noe så voldsomt brutalt med det mentale som dette døgnet i Hell. Gang på gang datt jeg ned i den dypeste kjelleren som var mørkere enn det svarteste mørker. Jeg var ordentlig kvalm, kastet opp 80 ggr typ og var helt hinsides trøtt. Gren gjorde jeg å. Dette var en innerlig sann kamp inni meg selv. Jeg endte alikevel opp med 181,6 km og 5.beste dame, etter å ha stått i det alle 24 timene. De siste 6 timene løp jeg nemlig ganske bra😊 Tog også pers på 100 miles-20:40 timer🔥 Nådde ikke målet mitt-tar det neste gang. Kommer racerapport med bilder senere. Må bare hente meg inn litt... Everyone is busy. Lets stop using busy as a justification for what we are not doing. If something is important enough to you, youll move heaven, and earth to make it happen. If you look around, you will find countless examples of people in all walks of life who make sacrifices and go after whatever it is that they need and want to achieve. Still not convinced, if your spouse/child/parent was in a serious accident and rushed to ICU, I am 100% sure that all of your business would very rapidly evaporate, and youd be moving mountains to get to their hospital bedside post-haste. If you are only ready, willing and able to make time for three hours of running training a week, that is absolutely fine. However, if that is the case, then I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that running a marathon is not actually a goal, but merely a dream. Don’t you wish you could just clone yourself and get more done?! 😉 🏃 🏃 🏃 . Seriously though, sometimes the amount of stuff we runners put on our plates can be overwhelming. And the toughest thing about it is that peak running requires a lot of REST! 🤦🏻‍♂️ . As my family has grown and my athletes have multiplied and the amount of time I devote to running has grown, I’ve had to be RUTHLESS with my schedule to fit it all in. . And I’ll be the first one to tell you that it doesn’t always go well! 😂 . But here’s a few tips that have helped! . 👉 Write it down. It’s the same idea behind making a budget for your money. You see where all of your money (or time) is going. “Shoot, I really spent THAT much time on social media last week?!” 😬 . 👉 First things first. First, what sort of life do you want to lead? How do you want to be remembered? What sort of habits does that person have? Make sure whatever comes next fits with that or else... what does it even matter? 🤷🏻‍♂️ . 👉 Cut out extras. There’s all sorts of “extras” in running like foam rolling, massage, etc. If you need to trim somewhere, consider doing these things a little less frequently. . 👉 Multitask like it’s your JOB! I’m talking bodyweight exercises or foam rolling (see above!) while you watch TV, listening to books while you run, and whatever else. These can REALLY multiply your time! My favorite is throwing a resistance band around my legs and doing some hip abductions while I wash dishes! . 👉 Don’t take yourself too seriously. There’s a thousand different ways to meet the same goal. If life gets in the way, then you just have to choose a different path and that’s okay. Don’t force yourself into thinking there’s only one way for you. Think outside the box and enjoy the ride! . Tip Runner: Esto es lo que ocurre en tu cuerpo al subir y bajar cuestas corriendo. Subir cuestas: ideal para fortalecer el tren inferior Lo sabes: el día que te toca el entrenamiento de cuestas vas a sufrir en las subidas (aunque probablemente también disfrutarás en las bajadas). Las cuestas de 30 segundos en sprint, o de uno o dos minutos a un ritmo constante o progresivo nos ayudan a fortalecer todo nuestro tren inferior: un entrenamiento ideal de cara a la larga distancia. Durante las subidas, el impacto que reciben nuestras articulaciones es bastante menor que el que solemos generar en llano. Eso sí, lo compensamos con un trabajo intenso de glúteos, isquiotibiales y gemelos, todos formando parte de la cadena muscular posterior. También trabajan el flexor de la cadera, que nos ayuda a elevar las piernas para dar las zancadas, y los cuádriceps, que nos ayudan a impulsarnos hacia arriba. Bajar cuestas: control y estabilidad El momento de la bajada, aunque nos puede parecer mucho más sencillo que la subida, es en realidad más crítico a la hora de sufrir una lesión. Generalmente la bajada la realizamos después de haber subido una cuesta, cuando nuestro cuerpo acusa más cansancio, y el hecho de tener a nuestro favor la fuerza de la gravedad puede hacer que nos descontrolemos y que terminemos en el suelo. Durante las bajadas el impacto articular es mucho mayor que en las subidas o que sobre terreno llano, razón por la cual muchas personas experimentan dolor en las rodillas después de una bajada pronunciada. Además, durante las bajadas el trabajo de los músculos es de contracción excéntrica (mientras se encuentran alargados), y puede generar microrroturas musculares que nos pueden pasar factura. Integra las cuestas en tu rutina poco a poco, combinando en distintos entrenamientos diferentes intensidades y tiempos. RECUERDO 📌 . Una de mis fotos favoritas, porque a mi parecer, refleja todo lo que un atleta (ya sea elite o aficionado) vive al lograr eso que tanto buscaba. Yesterday was easily one of best, the hardest, and most inspiring days of my life. The weather was absolutely insane, raining every step of the way, sometimes torrential downpours and sometimes a bit less, and wind gusts of over 30 mph right in our faces. But despite all that, I had an amazing squad of DFMC team mates (several of us that managed to stick together for more than half the race), my dad who ran the last 7+ miles with me, and my loving and supportive boyfriend, family and friends who drove to multiple spots on the course throughout the day and stood in the miserable weather to cheer me on and give me wet hugs. Not to mention all the die hard, Boston Strong fans along the way, and support from friends and family near and far in the form of contributions to my fundraising for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. We ran this race for so much more than finish times and medals around necks. Every person on team DFMC has someone they’re running in honor or memory of, and most people have more than one. Every time the rain got harder or the wind blew stronger I thought about all the names I carried with me and pushed a little bit more.
