A series of newly published fact sheets for the off-bottom oyster aquaculture industry in the Gulf of Mexico provides guidelines and suggested safety procedures for preparing for tropical storms and hurricanes. They can be viewed at 🔗https://shellfish.ifas.ufl.edu/hurricane-resources/ (posted in out profile) Florida Sea Grant, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant and Louisiana Sea Grant developed the “Tropical storm and hurricane preparedness for off-bottom oyster aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico” series to help oyster farmers reduce damages related to wind, storm surge and decreased salinity from flooding. There are six publications that focus on planning, preparation and recovery for different types of farms, facilities and equipment: - Introductory Planning Guide - Land-based Operations Guide - Workboats Guide - Adjustable Long-Line Farms Guide - Floating Cage Farms Guide - Floating Bag Farms Guide The guides help growers create storm plans, prepare to use them and implement them. They offer checklists to help growers take specific steps to increase resilience before, during and after a storm. Best practices in the publications focus on such topics as system installation, farm maintenance, workforce considerations, boat storage, and production facility and processing plant preparation. The guides also include timelines that help growers stage tasks based on a storm or hurricane’s track forecast. Britain’s new low-carbon, high-speed railway #HS2 will make #Solihull one of the best-connected places to live and work in the country, helping support thousands of jobs for local people while tackling climate change. Solihull will be at the heart of the HS2 network thanks to the new ‘net zero-carbon’ Interchange station, close to the NEC and Birmingham Airport. The borough’s strategic importance was underlined when Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the Interchange site on the day the HS2 building programme was formally launched this month. A new sustainable gateway for Solihull Plans for Interchange have been praised for drawing on the historical and agricultural character of the local area, and were approved by Solihull Council last month. The six-track station is now poised to transform local and national links, and ease transport congestion. Interchange will play a key role in plans by Solihull Council’s Urban Growth Company to transform the area, including supporting 70,000 jobs in the borough. HS2 is helping to reignite economic confidence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and this ambition is matched by environmental commitments to reducing carbon emissions and setting new standards in sustainable 21st century travel. Interchange will use ‘green’ technologies, such as natural daylight and ventilation, to reduce its carbon footprint. In fact, the station was hailed a global standard-bearer for sustainability before a spade went into the ground, becoming the first station in the world to achieve ‘outstanding’ certification under the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). This will put Interchange in the top 1% of UK buildings for its eco-friendly credentials. Solar panels will produce zero-carbon electricity while rainwater will be directed to a giant tank for reuse for the station’s water supply. Better connectivity Located in a new 340-acre development called Arden Cross, Interchange’s four 400 metre platforms will be served by 10 trains an hour when the full HS2 network is up and running. #OnThisDay – On this day in 1989, the Lowcountry began feeling the effects of Hurricane Hugo, a category four storm, which made landfall around midnight on September 22. With maximum sustained winds of 135-140 mph and the largest storm tide heights ever recorded on the east coast, the storm caused tremendous damage throughout the area. Water surged over the seawall and flooded many first floors in downtown Charleston. 80% of roofs suffered damage, and over one hundred buildings were severely structurally impaired or collapsed. Mount Pleasant experienced heavy wind destruction to buildings and trees. Beach communities such as Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach lost numerous homes and businesses. Roads were impassable due to debris and many went weeks without power. Truly a storm that will not be forgotten in the Lowcountry. Our head of ethics research, Stuart Palmer, says we should be very concerned that the Australian government’s ‘gas-led recovery’ will make achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 even harder. “We need further investment into renewables and energy efficiency and storage to drive our transition to a 1.5-degree world. Instead we’re being asked to believe that gas can both stimulate the economy and reduce carbon emissions. “But this gas boom spruiked by the gas sector will only exacerbate not mitigate climate change. “IPCC scenarios show gas use needs to decline this decade to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit warming to 2 and then to 1.5 degrees. Opening up vast new unconventional gas fields instead is the gas equivalent of Adani Carmichael. “We have an enormous opportunity for an Australian green hydrogen and steel industry, powered by Australian renewables. There is a real risk that this opportunity will be frustrated by Santos and other gas companies looking for government funding to develop unproven carbon capture and storage technology. Why use public money for that when we already have the renewables technology to produce hydrogen - without creating more carbon that needs to be captured? “Hydrogen produced by renewables, not by gas, is where we should be investing as investors, companies and governments. “We want see a 2050 net-zero emissions target date and a price on carbon emissions. This will drive the investment and innovation to deliver the urgently needed reductions in emissions as efficiently as possible. Before Central Park even existed, the city was figuring out how to get clean water to its rapidly-growing population. Long story short: the Croton River in Westchester County was dammed up and an aqueduct system was built from there down to the City via the High Bridge in Washington Heights. Once in Manhattan, the water was collected in a receiving reservoir just outside of town which could hold enough fresh water to supply New York in the event of a drought or should the aqueduct need to be closed for repairs. This reservoir, completed in 1842, ended up in the middle of Central Park, which opened a decade later. Water could be pumped south to the Distributing Reservoir at 42nd Street, in today’s Bryant Park, to be piped into homes for drinking and washing. The water system was revolutionary, but it was almost immediately inadequate for New York’s burgeoning population. A new, larger Receiving Reservoir was building just north of the old one in 1862. The old reservoir was quickly viewed as an eyesore in need of demolition. Debate raged over what to do: keep it intact; demolish it for a war memorial; drain it but retain its walls as a promenade and move the Met and Natural History Museums inside it to hide them from view. The reservoir was drained in 1929 but sat a muddy pit for nearly 6 years, during which time it became home to an encampment of people made homeless by the Great Depression. Eventually, the space was turned into the Great Lawn with a small pond at its southern end. Along with Biohabitats, @olininsta , @rva_ny , @mueser_rutledge , and @tillett_lighting_design are bringing dynamic ecological encounters to an urban environment. This constructed floating wetland, planted on PET planting media units from Floating Wetland Solutions, was designed to mimic the ecotones of a coastal ecosystem featuring a rocky intertidal zone, low marsh, high marsh, and coastal tree and shrub area. Ecotones are transition areas between two biological communities, and each of the areas within the wetland are designed at a specific elevation to be representative of that particular zone. The boulders surrounding the edges of the wetland area are designed with depressions to create tide pool habitat that is common in the intertidal zone, which may be used by various bivalves, crabs, and small fish species.
