His resume at the end of his career is as good as anybody to have played the game, however Mitchell was initially overlooked at under 18 level and had to find another way to the top flight via Box Hill Hawks in the VFL. After being taken by Hawthorn at pick 36 in the 2001 draft, his early years saw him develop his determination to succeed and was rewarded by winning back to back most determined awards. Overtime he would become one of most prolific ball winners the game has seen and was known for his incredible consistency, skills, decision making and game IQ. He has now entered the coaching space on the back of a stellar playing career and is widely tipped to be a senior coach in waiting. Throughout our conversation, Sam discusses being overlooked, his willingness to work on his strengths, his training habits and routines, his willingness to make mistakes to test the boundaries, some insights into his coaching thoughts and his experiences working with Alistair Clarkson and Adam Simpson. LOTS OF COMPLAINTS 😅 Struggling clubs around Auckland say the schoolboy rugby system is destroying the grassroots. The alarming fall of boys participation in the sport was revealed in New Zealand Rugbys independent review into schools rugby last year. Findings from the review showed that since 2013, the number of school teams in Auckland dropped a staggering 20 per cent, from 225 to 181. The situation was even worse in North Harbour, where school teams saw a drop of more than 30 per cent. Several club rugby representatives say schoolboy rugby is killing clubs. The picture of youth leaving the national game follows a similar story: junior players leave the club rugby system, then slowly stop playing once they reach high school. The few that do continue often dont return to their rugby club of origin after school. Waitemata Rugby Club director of rugby Brent Semmons says: The problem I have with the club versus school, is that the schools dont necessarily have the resources to cater for every kid. You lose all that parental support, mothers and fathers who supported that group of boys and girls, all the way through to that age group.” And then post-that, they go to secondary schools and some schools dont even have the programme, or those that do have the programme are big programmes and the emphasis is on performance as opposed to participation. North Harbour Rugby boss David Gibson adds that “the professional element to sports has deepened in the school sports system and needs balance.” There have been some really sad stories where young sportspeople have been pushed to some dark places. Manurewa Rugby Club president Kere Maihi says the pathway to professional rugby is unrealistic for many and destroying the grassroots game. Its decimating club rugby in that the pathways skip the club scene, says Maihi. Getting players picked up out of schools and basically going straight into the Super academies and if theyre good enough maybe even straight into the Super teams. Posting to raise awareness around the #Enough campaign to remove the stereotypes and stigma around female rugby players body image. This year Ireland launched a new replica kit. For the men’s launch it was modelled by international players, but for the women’s launch, actual models were selected and paid. This has caused controversy across the rugby community as it reinforces stereotypes that female rugby players possess a masculinity that wouldn’t sell clothing.
