In the simplest of words, what a great day! 😄 Today I went 5/6 in my first weightlifting meet with a lifetime clean & jerk PR! I had an absolute blast lifting today as well as watching my @vikingbarbell teammates crush it! I am officially in love with this sport and can’t wait to see what the future holds. I want to congratulate everyone on their performances today and send a special thanks to coach @dermcdermott for his guidance and knowledge, as well as for allowing me to shoot for the moon at my first meet. I also want to send a special thanks to @jessahartlmt for keeping my muscles happy and healthy with her incredible expertise as well as for her friendship and endless support. To my friends that traveled to watch me lift today, I am so grateful that you would drive so far to watch me on stage for such a short time, you are amazing. Let’s talk CDC Alzheimer stats ... scary scary but information is power. So let’s get into it. - In the U.S. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) will double by 2060, according to a new study from the CDC. The burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in 2014 was 5 million people, which is 1.6 percent of the U.S. population in 2014—319 million people. This burden is projected to grow to 13.9 million, nearly 3.3 percent of the population in 2060–417 million people. For those that don’t know - Alzheimer’s disease is the 5th most common cause of death for Americans ages 65 years and older. It is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and, eventually, a person’s ability to perform even the simplest tasks, such as bathing, feeding, and dressing. **Black folks .. here’s where it hits closer to home (I had no clue) - Among ages 65 and older, African Americans have the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (13.8 percent), followed by Hispanics (12.2 percent), and non-Hispanic whites (10.3 percent), American Indian and Alaska Natives (9.1 percent), and Asian and Pacific Islanders (8.4 percent). By 2060, the researchers estimate there will be 3.2 million Hispanics and 2.2 million African Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The increases are a result of fewer people dying from other chronic diseases and surviving into older adulthood when the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias increases. Priming🔥 - Something I’ve played around with again recently that I a) really enjoy and b) notice a benefit from. As part of my warm up I’m performing a high velocity movement (video 1 - trap bar jump) before moving into my main lift for the day (video 2 - front squat) 👌🏻 - On another note, I’ve always sucked at front squats, something about being 6’6 with long femurs made them a real bitch. But @jaketuura said if you suck at them get better, and @elitestrengthcoach always makes me do them anyway, so I got better at them 🤷‍♂️ will I ever be great at them - no, of course not. Up at my family’s cottage for the next few weeks and I got in my first workout on the setup here. I’m normally a little lopsided when I squat but this session felt particularly bad...I realized on set 2 the ground slopes to the left so I’m having to sit more into my right leg to balance it out 🤣 in any event I managed 562x3x4 which is my heaviest squat session of the last few months. I wanted this wod to be over the second it started. I was hurting the entire time and mentally defeated before even picking up the bar due to the fact that I hadn’t touched an 85LBS thruster in 4+ months. It was completely the wrong mindset to have and it showed the entire workout. I’m blessed to have made it through this weekend with every holding up and excited to really train this next year and fix my injuries but mostly my mindset going into workouts like this. Life’s not fair and everyone had a tough time getting ready this year for the games with or without injuries. Congratulations to Ground ZeroW members Andrew Blackwood and Kieran Hensch who competed over the weekend at the PA Junior and Masters National Championships. Both lifters with huge total PB’s. BIGGEST FACTORS IN FINGER STRENGTH! 💪🔥💪 Most climbers are pretty obsessed about finger strength. We also know it has a big impact on climbing, whether bouldering, sport climbing or trad climbing. In addition, we all very aware that it’s not always easy to make progress consistently over the years! Many of the clients we work with find that a couple of years of finger strength gains come quickly as they either boulder more or they take their steps in training it systematically. As we’ve assessed and worked with so many climbers of all walks of life over the years, we’ve really come to see some strong patterns associated with either excessively strong fingers or excessively weak ones! Lets have a look at some of the BIG areas that affect the extremes of physiology. Before you drive in, please remember were talking about real outliers of strength here! These observations are based around the far end of the scale either end and the most important thing in this case is to reflect on whether you think your own situation may mirror any of the scenarios below.... could it impact choices going forward? 🌪Too much going on in your life This one can be termed as allostatic load. We see this issue every single week!! Its in our DMs, on social media comments and in emails from inquiring climbers. Do NOT expect to jam your life with stress, lack of sleep, a 24-7 lifestyle and partying and be really strong. It doesnt work. 🥘 Eat well – High Energy Availability One pattern we have observed over the years is that climbers who spend long periods of time in calorie deficit, with very low body fat percentages really struggle to make significant, lasting strength gains. Those climbers are not coming through the long-term with excessively strong fingers or upper bodies. Yes, they can create the effect of high strength-to-weight (STW) by moderating body composition, but in the long run, it’s setting up any athlete for sub-optimal gains in strength. Recap: Didn’t have a real plan going in, just wanted that AO Series qualification of 203kg. 1st: 89kg Totally slipped on the platform which was awkward (golden rule for competing: don’t miss the opener). Oops 2nd: 90kg Favorite lift of the competition. Felt great, and got a number on the board 3rd: 92kg. PR! STORY TIME- Heading into the final day, @karipearcecrossfit was in 11th place, 49 points out from snagging the 5th and final spot to advance to Aromas for the second part of the @crossfitgames. This week has been so damn good haha. I finally got meet @smith.julian He was the first bodybuilder I started following when I started lifting more seriously and wanting to get more involved in the fitness industry (it’s going pretty well so far lol). A lot of good memories of becoming incapacitated by the daily pump workouts 😂 It was great getting to meet @caseyrene as well, just radiating good vibes and glad she was still feeling well enough to host us (she literally coulda had a baby while we were there, like THAT close 😂). Heyo gang! 😃 • Here are some movements from my session yesterday. It was a real mash up drawing from multiple disciplines. As always though, run through a @movnat lens. • Im currently focused on obtaining more spinal flexion and extension through the auxillary help of Pilates and gymnastics skills but always brining it back to practical applications. The strength and mobility are immediately noticeable in the crossover. For example you can see the effect of my consistent ring training during my bar climb skills, especially when I bring my foot up to the bar at the top of the power up. I legit floated for a second as I was surprised with how easy it felt. Thats cool! • I feel there is so much good to draw from both aspects of stability. Having to organize yourself on both stable and unstable surfaces is the yin/yang of the stability game. Hence the crossover from rings to bar. Ill explain more about this in a future post. • Lots of variety here and thats been my direction as of late. Most of my skills are in nuance mode, small adjustments, peeling away layers of inefficiency. I dont need to spend too much time on them, just grease the groove every other day. • Other skills that require more mobility or strength (or both) get more attention and I practice them when Im freshest. One example is my shoulder presses. Im working towards both of the aforementioned attributes. • I grease the groove with the rest, its not a chore or challenge anymore, just a matter of slowly adding more volume, complexity, or intensity. • Do you train this way? • What are your thoughts on this approach? Most of you know how much I LOVE muscle snatches ❤️ @wilfleming and I have talked about this frequently on our podcast and have even played with a tendo and our power outputs etc with this lift. I just think it forces that “quadruple extension” more so than most other lifts.... you just can’t fake this one or things aren’t going to work 🤫 So I have not gone “heavy” with muscle snatches or any other Olympic lifting variation but I have been doing lots of variations of this lift with lighter weight. Regular, deficit, below knee, hip/pocket etc and really working on smooth pulls and BAR SPEED. I would guess I rarely go heavier than 155-170ish for any sets. Today I decided to go a bit heavier from the hang position and I was SUPER happy with how I felt. Extension felt really natural and bar moved FAST through all my sets. As part of any actual workout circuit, I ended up doing 5x5 with the hang muscle snatches and my last set I got a solid 200 x 5. If you scroll you will see a slow mo vid of a rep then the the actual speed of the lift. For reference sake I’m using a wider than a clean-grip but not a “normal” snatch width grip (I have very long arms) My “goal“ for a few years has Been a solid 100kg (220lb) hang muscle snatch and if you’ve ever done these you know a couple extra pounds can dramatically change the look of the lift 🤦🏻‍♂️ - anyway, I think I should reach that goal pretty soon based on today’s lifts 👍🏼 Really wish I had my @reponestrength unit but still waiting on my order to get here 😭 - @coach_dos on Instagram

So a rhino and a giraffe walk into a gym... This past weekend @jcummings512 and I did the @caffeineandkilos Battle Royale. 30 minutes of pure fitness! We managed to pull out a win and earn $1000. Jenn isn’t the biggest fan of burpees or thrusters but she did what needed to be done and was able to keep up with me for the whole workout. Then I hit a big power clean at 357 lbs and she stepped up and hit an equally, if not more, impressive 202 lb power clean. • Some days things don’t go well. Sometimes they do. Saturday was a great day for us. Yesterday I competed in my first @usa_weightlifting local in person meet. My goal was to hit all my lifts and see how a meet is ran. It was such a fun time! On a Saturday I have a fun session in the gym. It’s a session I get to do all the exercises I wouldn’t typically put into my programming however, fun saturday is very much a big part of my training. It’s not a session I take easy or don’t push the weight up. It’s a session to do other things mainly cleans, DB snatches, Slam ball tosses, KB swings, Ski Erg etc. I don’t worry about the volume of the session compared to the week before, it’s a training day I train to my energy level as it’s the 6th day on the trot and my 3rd leg day (sorta), it’s a day I go in and work hard without worrying if it’s 10kg or 40kg. I love training and if lockdown taught me one thing it was I like training if I’m using bands or using a barbell because it’s your intensity and the mindset you have on a session that makes it fun or not. And yes I use the word fun because even though it hurts it is fun 😂 So here is me having fun, swipe if you want to see me not do a squat clean on my first attempt. I want to dedicate this post to my devoted student @coorrraaa, she constantly surprises me with her progress and her character. This is the daunting powerlifter in my memory. Her heart is on fire to raise something that even Im afraid to imagine. She has a desire to try so heavy that her body is certainly not ready. But her mental part will make her a great sportswoman. She is only 20 years old, she has been training with me for almost 2 years. And during this time, her result has become very steep in the world rankings. In this tournament she was able to improve her wilks by 40 more and now her wilks is 543 !!! In the absolute standings, she became the 6th among women with a worldwide reputation. Unorthodox leg workout for you guys who wanna try some challenging plyo and fun movements. • It’s always fun to challenge yourself and switch things up. That’s what I tried doing with this one. • I wore a 16lbs weight vest through the entire workout but that’s not necessary unless you’re up for an extra fun challenge lol. Enjoy! • 1.Kneeling squat jumps to broad jump to bear crawl back pedal • Start in a kneeling position , explode from your hips into a deep squat, hold the dumbbells and do a squat jump, as soon as you land drop the dumbbells and do a broad jump. From the broad jump get into a bear crawl position and back pedal to the starting position and repeat. • 2.Plyo Bulgarian split squats to decline push up • Start with your back foot on a elevated surface, do a lunge and explode from the bottom of the lunge bringing your front foot to a high knee hop. Proceed by getting your hands to the ground and dropping your feet back to a push up stance, do a push up and explode back to the beginning position. • 3.Barbell kneeling jumps to squats • Start at a kneeling position with the barbell over your shoulders, from there explode through your hips into a deep squat. Stand up to finish your squat, kneel back down and repeat switching knees every time you kneel down. • 4.One leg RDL to one legged box jumps to pistol squats • Start in front a box keeping one leg off the floor at all times, hinge your hips back as your chest lowers towards the ground until your chest and leg are both parallel to the ground. Come back to starting position then do a one legged jump onto the box, then do a pistol squat keeping your heel down at all times and jump back to the ground trying to stabilize yourself the entire time on that same leg. • 5.Finisher: Squat jumps • Use a barbell on your shoulders, squat down, jump up at the top of the squat landing back in a squat (Tip:after the jump make sure you are absorbing the shock by squatting right away as your squatting make sure your heels are pressed to the ground so the pressure go to your knees). - @fitnessblazt on Instagram

--H.U.M.B.L.E..B.R.A.G— One of the most useful tools for your lifting on Instagram is the humble brag. Generally this means posting something with a self-deprecating caption to draw attention to something that you’re actually really proud of. In powerlifting, normally this means posting a lift which is slightly heavier than a competitors lift, then going back and forth with that competitor in the comments saying how much they’re going to smoke you by, even though you desperately want to beat them. Here’s an example, with my real thoughts in brackets: Squats and deadlifts, both 275kg x 5 (2.5kg heavier than what @matt_stenzel did). Really not happy with how these moved (literally couldn’t be happier), but happy to walk away with PBs (I need a lot of likes on this for validation). I’ve got pretty stiff competition in my next meet (no competition, Stenzel will destroy me at a lighter bodyweight) so all I can do is try to put in my best effort (I generally give up after 1 set). At the end of the day, no matter the outcome I will be happy if I try my best in training (Stenzel will destroy me and I’ll likely quit the sport as a result). What a day! 🥳 I haven’t been lifting a ton the last few months (lots of quarantine CrossFit) but did a meet real quick to try and qualify for the AO in Vegas 💃🏻 this fall with my girl @crossfitlex. Swipe for my heaviest snatch and clean + jerk of the day! We qualified, went 6/6, got 1st in my weight class & most importantly, had a blast. There’s always work to do, but man I’ve come a lonnnng way in putting less pressure on myself and just enjoying training/competing. Deadlifts. I hit #765 for 4. The goal was 5 which was a pretty big reach and to be COMPLETELY honest, i had the strength for a fifth but lost my grip off the floor on my fourth. Coming into the fourth week of this volume accumulation I’m really feeling fatigued. Being able to manage a set like that under those circumstances puts me in a great place moving into the next phase of prep. Thank you to all who were here to be a part of that. Pregnancy is a trip man. The truth that every pregnancy is different is very much based on the fact that before your first born, it was just you. Second rodeo you’re chasing a small human around who goes REAL hard from the moment he wakes up to the moment he sleeps, all while praying he doesn’t stuff any more matchbox cars down the toilet while your cooking. It’s glorious but it’s also exhausting. I’m soaking up the time and often reeling myself back to the present moment, because once baby girl lands, we’re in for a whole new world #cantfreakingwaittho. Workouts this time around are much different. Very early on, moving the barbell felt like crap. Occasionally I flirt with some light powers or front/back squats but the bulk of my training is body weight or slangin KBs/DBs. I’m very cautious about my abs because I was a knuckle head during my pregnancy with Colt and pushed way too hard too soon postpartum, that I didn’t allow my body time to heal. I’m very confident that being cautious now and after baby girl is born will make rehab and progressing back to CrossFit & weightlifting smoother. Any movement that causes my abs to dome or simply doesn’t feel good I scrap and sub for something else. I have reoccurring dreams about muscle ups and heavy CJs but thankfully I’m patient and wise enough to know that the next chapter of training will be the best yet. The modality is different right now but my determination to learn and grow has remained. This chapter is all about strengthening my mental and spiritual game and frankly, learning to move differently is a blessing. My favorite new addition is weekly virtual yoga with my homegirl and personal coach @anna.alm.bran. While my body is rapidly changing and growing this baby girl, it’s very easy to feel out of whack. Anna has helped me stay centered and in tune with my breath and I can’t even tell you how important and powerful it’s been. Here’s a video of 85k back squats from a week ago. Is it humbling to squat what I was snatching regularly? No. Because getting strong and back in shape is easy and familiar territory. Going into this meet, I believe my best snatch was 113kg and clean and jerk was 155kg. This day I hit 118/150kg, making 4 lifts. Eccentric patterning . In the world of handstands and gymnastics training we demand a high level of strength matched with balance and stability . At times this can take years to develop even when some movements seem within arms reach . Eccentric reps with the intent of controlling and developing awareness the entirety of the pattern are one of the best tools to use as a bridge . Doing these reps slowly over 5-15 seconds teaches the nervous system how to hold the required tension and build healthy technique . Some strength training this morning. Bringing the hip thrusts back into the program. Managed 250kg for a few reps and squatted some rainbows today as well. Step up jump to the box is being used for ankle stiffening and then also the hamstring iso plank to strengthen my hamstrings. 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣🔜❗️ Rant alert (you have been warned)🚨 😳 2019 was a crazy year. There were a lot of tough times, but I learned a ton and ended up accidentally getting where I wanted to be. My main takeaway was that you can WANT to reach your goals, and you can put tons of effort into it, but you can’t NEED to. When I don’t enjoy my training, which in the past hasn’t been a priority, I choke under pressure when it’s time to perform. I feel like all of my suffering will be pointless unless I do well, and as a result I get crushed by the pressure. I only climb well when I climb with joy, and remember that every day could be my last. I had no expectations at ropes Nationals since I wasn’t even going to do ropes season if I did well in bouldering. Before my runs, I thought about all of the amazing people in my life, and I ended up finally making my goal of getting on the US Team! More importantly though, I’m so much happier now, and I think I’m a better person. The first week I felt stronger week over week since I started losing weight back in March. It was across all lifts too. First video is a 385lbs deadlift from this week, weighing in around 169lbs. For comparison sake, second video is a 365lb deadlift from back in March when I weighed around 188lbs. . Third video is one of my sets of 285lbs on the Candito deadlift, included here because it’s just a bad ass looking lift at the top. . Squats have been a struggle for a while, but every now and then I have a good day. I started my training week today with a great squat session, including a smooth 320lbs single that Is just the beginning! . I’ve still got 4-5 more pounds to lose to reach my goal of 165lbs, and after that, if this week is any indication, I will someday be stronger at 165-170lbs than I ever was at 185lbs+.. . A few little bits from the last week of training 🔷 Flare to flag - still a work in progress, some days it’s easy some days it’s not. Need to focus on keeping tension in the legs when landing the flag 🔷 First time doing Inlocates without feet on the floor, felt surprisingly good. A bit of a way to deadlift that way to flag but I’ll get there eventually. I was surprised that I could do this on both sides pretty comfortably. The right is definitely stronger but my left side is starting to get stronger finally. 🔷 Double straddle 90 degree HSPUs off the floor, been a long time since I’ve done doubles and this was on a deload session so pretty happy with the progress there. 🔷 And finally my left side is getting solid with flag again, even enables me to start doing some 1.5 arm switches on it. Gårdagen lyftsession sponsrades av mycket mat dagen innan. Full söndagsvila och självklart ingen rädsla för att bli stor. Utan drivkraft att bli stark. Ofta när jag träffar nya kunder så har dom målet att bli starkare. Men innan dom hade träffat mig har dom aldrig ens försökt att träna för att bli starka på riktigt. Another Sr. Worlds is in the books! Definitely not the day I wanted, but still happy to have made some lifts and put up a decent total.
