Shyamasundar Dasa : Once, Prabhupada was in London when I was sleeping outside of his room in Bury Place. I heard in my dreams very faintly, Shyamasundar. I awoke and hit my head on the bunk above me and staggered out. And the door was just opening when I got out, and Prabhupada was standing there, reeling, and then he just collapsed in my arms. My God! I was stunned. I didnt know what in the world to do. I picked him up, and it was like he didnt weigh anything. There was no weight. He felt like a little pillow or something, absolutely no weight whatsoever. And his eyes were closed and gray faced. I went over to his bed and laid him down. He was shivering, so I began to heap blankets over him. And then he opened his eyes and said, Im cold. So I went over and turned the heat up as far as it would go and got some more blankets and covered him up. I just didnt know what to do. I didnt know whether to call a hospital or get an ambulance. And then he said, Bring me some black-pepper paste. He told me how to make it. So I ran down to the kitchen and brought it up and put it on his forehead. He said, Now you just lay down there and sleep. No hospital. So I ran around to the pujaris and woke them up and said, Look, at mangal arati, which is in about an hour, no bells, just quiet, no singing loud. Prabhupada needs to rest. He slept probably five hours or so. He got up, and I slept right on the floor beside him. I didnt really sleep, I dont believe. I think I stayed awake most of the night just watching. His breathing was deep and normal. But even then he wasnt sleeping. Every time I would get really, really worried and look up at him, his eyes would open. Like, Okay, okay. And in the morning he got up and said, It is time for a morning walk and carried on as if nothing happened. Now you tell me where that energy comes from. Is that possible? I think for us settler non-black folk, protesting is often an attractive option because it is easier than the much harder work of organizing our own communities to mobilize for Black lives, interrogating anti-blackness in our families, and confronting our own complicity. An Asian-American store owner called the cops on George Floyd. An Asian-American cop stood guard as Derek Chauvin suffocated the life out of him. The most radical political site is often not on the street or in front of the precinct, it is in our homes, inside our wallets, within our places of worship, those intimate politix that are harder to talk about. As much as our existence as settlers is made possible by the enslavement and continued exploitation of Black people, it is also informed by Black brilliance, artistry, and resistance. Black art that gave way to imaginaries in which we too, could be understood and our bodies made intelligible. Black political thought and pedagogy that formulated language for our positionality in the US racial paradigm. Black power movements which we are indebted to as beneficiaries, and that taught us how to organize. It is easy and commonplace now for us non-black people to urge others to talk to your families without any guidance on how to have these conversations--and this can be easily lost on us 1st/2nd gen folks who may have language barriers with our parents or community, literally without the lexicon of oppression to have these dialogues. Thats why in my bio I linked to Letters for Black Lives, a crowdsourced public project that has pre-written letters and scripts for unpacking anti-blackness in more than 22 languages. Since everyone asks me about my inspiration for writing, I thought why not share it with everyone today. Generally, kids grow up watching Marvel and DC movies and reading their comics to know what superheroes are. But my childhood was absolutely different. I grew up listening to the stories of my great grandfather - Mr. Balraj Khanna. A Deputy Editor in that times national daily - Milap newspaper and even Deputy Mayor of Delhi, he was a one man army. I have heard my parents and grandmother talking about him as a person who always wanted to help others, a person who got into politics just to work for the needy. A person, who even at his house used to invite people to share their problems with him and tried to solve all the problems then and there. He is my superhero and always will be. Happy 103rd birthday, Bauji. I might not have ever met you, but I know you have been and will always walk beside me in every stage of life. Swamiji: When I was in Jaipur, I met a great grammarian and felt a desire to study Sanskrit grammar with him. Although he was a great scholar in that branch, he had not much aptitude for teaching. He explained to me the commentary on the first aphorism for three days continuously, still I could not grasp a bit of it. On the fourth day the teacher got annoyed and said, Swamiji, I could not make you understand the meaning of the first aphorism even in three days; I fear, you will not be much benefited by my teaching. Hearing these words, a great self - reproach came over me. Putting food and sleep aside, I set myself to study the commentary on the first aphorism independently. Within three hours the sense of the commentary stood explained before me as clearly as anything; then going to my teacher I gave him the sense of the whole commentary. My teacher, hearing me, said, How could you gather the sense so excellently within three hours, which I failed to explain to you in three days? After that, every day I began to read chapter after chapter, with the greatest ease. Through concentration of mind everything can be accomplished -- even mountains can be crushed to atoms. Disciple: Sir, everything is wonderful about you. Swamiji: There is nothing wonderful in this universe. Ignorance constitutes the only darkness, which confers all things and makes them look mysterious. When everything is lighted by Knowledge, the sense of mystery vanishes from the face of things. Even such an inscrutable thing as Maya, which brings the most impossible things to pass, disappears. Know Him, think of Him, by knowing whom everything else is known. And when that Atman is realised, the purport of all scriptures will be perceived as clearly as a fruit on the palm of ones hand. A few days before the Delhi Durbar of December 1911, people began to pour into Delhi from all parts of India and beyond to watch the coronation festivities. The roads were washed; oil was sprinkled to keep the dust down; and the city looked spick and span. Motor cars which had hardly ever been seen before, came into Delhi and raced on the roads; and horses and elephants were seen everywhere. Queer-looking carriages passed through the Chandni Chowk and the Chawri Bazar, and strange faces were visible all around. Most fantastic and colourful dresses rustled in the streets of Delhi from long robes to short coats, and gowns to waistcoats, and head gears of a hundred kinds. Near the Fort, the glacis was levelled into terraces, and the slope leading upwards towards the road was turned into hundreds of stands which encircled the whole of the Jama Masjid, and along the Esplanade Road. From end to end of the Chandni Chowk, the central causeway was turned into one long line of wooden stands. In front of the Town Hall and around the statue of the English Queen, one enormous stand was erected. The stands continued through the Fatehpuri Bazar with its majestic mosque and grateful shadows, and continued to the Mori Gate and beyond. All this made Delhi look more like an exhibition ground than the city which was once the greatest in Hindustan. The younger population became enthusiastic at the prospect of watching the procession of the King. A real king they had never seen; and the stories they had heard about royal processions from their elders seemed to be coming true at last. They were dying to see the big fair. For the residents of Delhi never miss an opportunity of enjoying themselves, and this quality is peculiar to Delhi-ites alone of all the peoples of India. Even during the terrible days of 1857, when the guns were spitting fire, they used to climb up on the roofs to watch the fun of cannon balls shooting red hot out of the cannons mouths, and compared the firing to fireworks during the festival of Shab-barat. My Grandpa Papa Avtar Singh Sangha • 1933 - 2020 • The oldest member of my family passed away last week and was laid to rest this Friday • He left his rural life as a farmer and travelled over from the Punjab, Northern India to the Midlands, UK in the 60s. He worked for over 30 years in foundry doing backbreaking work often for 6 days a week with countless overtime hours. It took its toll and in retirement he became less mobile. Like a lot of his generation he somehow saved an extrodinary amount spending little on himself seeking to enable a better life for those following him. Remembering his sacrifices, generousity & thankful for having the privelige to have known & shared conversations with him. 🔸Simo Häyhä, the deadliest sniper of history🔸 🔸The Awakening of THE legend In 1925, Häyhä was drafted for a year of military service. He displayed his military prowess early on and after only one year had already advanced to the rank of Corporal. Later, Häyhä joined the Finnish Civil Guard and discovered his talent and passion for shooting. He reportedly spent all his free time outside practicing his shots. Eventually he could hit 16 targets per minute from 500 feet, making him ideal as a sniper in the war which was fast approaching. 🔸When the war broke out The Winter War began in Finland in 1939, when Russia took the opportunity to regain the territory that had once been theirs. The Russian army probably assumed that such a tiny country like Finland would be easy to take. What they didn’t count on was the Finnish concept of ‘sisu’, which roughly translates to ‘guts’ or ‘determination’. Häyhä’s skills were put to good use against such overwhelming odds. At one point, he and 31 other Finnish men faced off against 4000 Soviet soldiers. 🔸The White Death Though the Winter War lasted only around 100 days, Häyhä managed 500 confirmed kills during that time, and his unofficial total may be as high as 800, a record which has yet to be matched. His personal best was 40 confirmed kills in a single day. Häyhä managed this thanks to military tactics that were unheard of at the time. Dressing in white camouflage allowed him to blend in with the winter scenery and he only carried a day’s worth of supplies, so that he wouldn’t be weighed down. He piled up snow banks around himself for concealment and put snow in his mouth to prevent his breath from giving him away. Rejecting more modern and advanced models, he used his own gun (a Finnish Sako Mosin-Nagant Model 28-30 rifle) with an iron sight instead of a scope, as he claimed that scopes could catch glare from sunlight and be spotted by enemy snipers. ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਮਸੀਹਾ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਕਿੱਸਾ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਫੋਟੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਵੇਖ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਇਹ 1947 ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਂਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾਧਾਰੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਯੂਨੀਅਨਿਸਟ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਮੀਅਰ ਸਰ ਸਿਕੰਦਰ ਹਿਆਤ ਖਾਨ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਏ। ਜਿਕਰਯੋਗ ਏ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਜੱਟ ਸੀ ਇਕ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਜੱਟ ਤੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਜੱਟ ਤੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪਗੜੀਧਾਰੀ ਸੀ । ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਬਚਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਉਹ ਬੰਦਾ ਏ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਐਕਟ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਪਾਸ ਨਾ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਅੱਜ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਜਹਾਰੇ ਹੋਣੇ ਸੀ । ਉਸ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਸਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਜਮੀਨ, ਘਰ, ਜਾਂ ਮੱਝ ਕੁਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਲ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਿਆਜ ਦੁਗਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਮਾਫ ਗਿਣਿਆ ਜਾਊ। ਇਸ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਤੇ ਆਉਣ ਸਾਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਜਮੀਨ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰਾ ਕੋਲ ਗਹਿਣੇ ਪਈ ਸੀ ਉਹ ਛੁਟ ਗਈ। ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਬਹੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਦੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ। ਪਰ ਇਸ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਦੰਤ ਕਥਾ ਨੇ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਸੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੈਠੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਬੜੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਬੜੇ ਚਾਅ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਾਉਦੇ ਸੀ ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਏਦਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਕਥਾ ਇਸ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਪਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਸਿਰਫ ਸੰਕੇਤਿਕ ਮਾਤਰ ਸੀ । ਕਥਾ ਐਵੇਂ ਸੀ :--- ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਇਹ ਕਨੂੰਨ ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਸ ਹੋਣਾ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਇਕ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਮੋਢੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਇਆ। ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ ਨੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆਂ- ਆਹ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਮੋਢੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਏ , ਇਸ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਏ ? ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ- ਇਸ ਕੁਹਾੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਪੁੱਟ ਦੇਣੀ ਏ । (ਏਥੇ ਕੁਹਾੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਿੱਲ ਦੇ ਕਾਗਜਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ) ਫਿਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਵੀ ਏਦਾਂ ਹੀ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਅੱਜ ਪੱਕੀਆਂ ਮੰਡੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਡੀਕਰਨ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹੋ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਏ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਦੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਤਿੰਨ ਆਰਡੀਨੈਂਸ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਏ। ਅੱਜ ਜੋ ਜੱਟ ਗਾਣਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੜਕਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਛੋਟੂਰਾਮ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੀ ਏ। ਪਰ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਨਾਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਣ Palvinder Khaira - @save_farmers_punjab on Instagram

Lahir dengan nama lengkap Syekh Yusuf Abul Mahasin Tajul Khalwati Al-Makassari Al-Bantani atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Syekh Yusuf Al-Makasari. Lahir dari pasangan Abdullah dan Aminah lalu memulai pendidikan agama di Cikoang saat usia 15 tahun. Syekh Yusuf juga berguru pada Sayyid Ba-Alawi bin Abdul Al-Allamah Attahir dan Sayyid Jalaludin Al-Aidid. Pernah singgah di Aceh lalu pergi ke Gujarat dan bertemu dengan Syekh Nuruddin Ar-Raniri, salah seorang penasihat Sulthanah Shafiyatuddin. Beliau berkelana selama kurang lebih 20 tahun mulai dari Gujarat, Yaman, Damaskus (Suriah) hingga akhirnya ke Makkah dan Madinah. Selesai menimba ilmu, Syekh Yusuf kembali ke Nusantara. Konon, ia tidak kembali ke Gowa, tetapi ke Banten dan bertempat tinggal di wilayah kerajaan yang saat itu dipimpin oleh Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Syekh Yusuf ditangkap Belanda ketika Kesultanan Banten dekalahkan Belanda tahun 1682. Hingga akhirnya beliau diasingkan ke Sri Langka tahun 1684. Namun begitu semangatnya tidak surut. Syekh Yusuf melakukan dakwah dan penyebaran islam di Sri Langka yang dapat cukup menarik banyak murid. Salah satunya, ulama besar India, Syekh Ibrahim ibn Mian. Karena khawatir dakwah Syekh Yusuf akan berdampak oleh kepentingan politik Belanda di Nusantata, beliau dijatuhi hukuman mati. Karena ditentang oleh Raja Makassar dan Raja Alamghir di India, hukuman pun dibatalkan. Sebagai gantinya Syekh Yusuf dijatuhi pembuangan seumur hidup. Beliau diasingkan di Afrika Selatan pada tahun 1694.Di Afrika Selatan, Syekh Yusuf membangun permukiman di Cape Town yang sekarang dikenal sebagai Macassar. Dia pun dikenal sebagai orang pertama yang menyebarkan Islam di Afrika Selatan. Melihat jasa beliau, pemerintah Indonesia menanugerahi gelar pahlawan nasional tahun 1995. Lebih dari itu pada tahun 2005, Presiden Afrika Selatan Thabo Mbeki memberikan gelar Pahlawan Nasional Afrika Selatan kepada Syekh Yusuf. Begitu besar jasa-jasa beliau kepada umat Islam di Indonesia maupun di luar sana.
