Pictured is the original wheel of the Ferrari 250 GTO chassis 3851, the most valuable car in history to be sold at auction. Today the newly fitted steering wheel on that glamorous car is not the original from the Ferrari factory. In 1962, the pilot Henri Oreiller had a fatal crash during a test run on the Montlhery circuit destroying the GTO completely. At that time, the wheel, still intact, was removed to allow extraction of Henri Oreiller from the car, to be transferred to hospital, where he later died.The wrecked GTO was quickly sold and sent to Italy for rebuild. A new steering wheel was installed to replace the original missing one, which had in fact been kept by Gisele, Henri’s widow. Subsequently she gifted this to Rene Negri, her late husband’s mechanic, in memory of his friend. Canadian Hot Rods magazine’s design our van entry deadline is November 1....we’ve had about 10 entries so far but here are a couple more that stand out. The blue/white rendering with our CHR Super Beaver logo is the work of Matt Dyck of @mattdyckstudios , who submitted more than one design and the second one with the Dodge style wheels and cool maple leaf treatment is from Murray Kormant @murraykomantdesign who also submitted more than one idea. We are loving the concepts and can’t wait to see more entries. It’s going to be really difficult to choose one. After the November 1/2020 deadline we will choose our top 5 and we’ll share those on our social media pages to get some feedback. The winning design will be announced in our Feb/March 2021 issue of CHR. Remember the winner gets $500, a 10-year subscription to Canadian Hot Rods, a story in the magazine and of course their design immortalized on our Dodge A108 van. The new punto for the 21st century was as ultra modern on the inside as it was on the outside. A light and spacious cabin, lots of storage space and the early ones had a two tone cream and grey layout. A non standard DIN stereo marked a move away from using the standard DIN car stereos that were used throughout the previous two decades and if you choose an ELX or above you got a sub in the boot!
