𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘺 - an ongoing study of landscape and time along the interstates connecting Sin City and the City of Angeles. Interstate 15 traverses the heart of the Mojave, and for the better part of the past year and a half, I’ve made the drive countless times. The beautiful but unforgiving landscape of the high desert can be borrowed but never truly possessed, evident by the many structures of a past time, imminently damned to ruin. On the open road here, time tends to feel both sped up and terribly slow and between every trip I make, things change - sometimes rather drastically. Admittedly I didn’t start thinking of this as a cohesive ongoing project until more recently and truthfully, it started out of necessity to keep my commute interesting. For me, the run can be occasionally excruciating while other times I find solace in the terrain and palette. Depending on time of day and time of year, daylight plays off of each subject drastically different. I’ve made the trip early and late and every hour in between - sometimes by choice, sometimes out of obligation. There is a lot more to echo than we shared last time! The town of Echo was established in the 1800s. The red sandstone cliffs and surrounding geography created echoes which contribute to the name of the town! There are still a few people living here, but as you can see for the pictures there are old buildings and a LOT of history! Near this town there is a collection of natural pillars called The Witches (pictures 7-9). Captain Albert Tracy sketched them in his journal in 1858. Describing them as figures with long skirts and pointy hats. Can you see it? 🧙♀️ The last picture features a very unique structure just minutes away from Echo. Devils slide is a remnant of sediments deposited in a sea that laid in this area some 180 million years ago! It is 40 feet high and 25 feet apart! Which one are you most excited to go see? A few weeks ago, I got an Imacon Flextight film scanner. I was so excited to get home with the scanner that I didn’t stop to photograph anything on the way home. That was until I saw something that REALLY caught my eye off in the distance. I pulled over, grabbed my Yashica T3 Super and my panorama camera and adventured off. What I had found was an enormous abandoned airplane chained to the ground. By the time I had reached the plane the sun was already beginning to dip down below the hills. There wasn’t much time before the sun would set completely so I loaded up a roll of Kodak Portra 400 in each of my cameras and photographed the plane with the sunset light that I had available. The fires in the Bay Area had filled the sky with heavy smoke, making the sky look glorious in the sunset. After I had finished the rolls in both of my cameras, I took a moment to walk around the airplane and admire its craftsmanship. It’s orange rusted out color reminded me of one of the X-Wing Starships that Luke Skywalker piloted in @starwars (spoilers?). I put away my cameras and made the long walk back to my car. My thorn-covered shoe laces dragged along the grass the entire way because I hadn’t tied my shoes since the moment I left home. I got in my car, drove home and set up the Imacon, ready to scan dozens of rolls of film I had shot over the last few weeks. In the words of Ranger Pete Steur-My first involvement with the Beachwood Community was when I was hired in June of 1990 as a Park Patrol Officer with the Park Ranger Division assigned to a security detail at Camp Hollywoodland. During that detail, I patrolled the Hollyridge Trail and other surrounding trail areas of the canyon late at night. I worked that assignment until January of 1995. In 2010 I was assigned to the Griffith Region which covers the parklands above Beachwood Canyon. My job duties as a Park Ranger are to provide public assistance and emergency service. The canyon is at the easternmost ridges of the Santa Monica Mountains, providing a refuge for our native wildlife and endemic plants (native). As a steward of the park, I believe that protecting wildlife and their habitat is among the most important aspects of my job. A wide variety of wildlife makes its home in Griffith Park; most of which can be found in Beachwood Canyon throughout the year. Over 200 bird species have been identified in the park, from year-round residents like the California quail, Cooper’s hawk, and great-horned owl to the migratory geese that visit annually. Reptiles and amphibians in the park include the western rattlesnake, California kingsnake, western toad, and two species of salamander. The mammals of Griffith Park consist of species that can be found throughout the urban environment of Los Angeles such as opossum, raccoons, and coyotes as well as those rarely seen in the city lights like bobcat, gray fox, and one very famous mountain lion.🌲 It was an honor to photograph Ranger Pete. We are all grateful for his integrity and dedication to his work which is to the benefit of us all in the canyon. One of the coolest places I’ve been to in the United States. The landscape in New Mexico was vastly different from anything I’d experienced and captured before. When we got here there was zero direction on how to actually get closer to the base of this place. So we wondered around small backroads in the hopes of linking up with a more official passage. Its National Park Week!!! Did you know there are over 150 #NationalHistoricLandmarks located in national park units? These four structures were designed by architect and interior designer Mary Jane Colter, built by Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, and managed by its concessioner, the Fred Harvey Company. Hopi House (1905), modeled after a Hopi pueblo, was built to merchandise Indigenous handicrafts in a historically accurate environment. Hermits Rest, a refreshment stand, and the Lookout, both dating from 1914, were designed to appear as if they had grown out of the rocky landscape. Colters last major structure on the South Rim, Desert View Watchtower, was completed in 1932, long after the establishment of @grandcanyonnps . Modeled after an Anasazi tower, it has notable interior spaces based on circular forms. All four structures respect their incomparable settings and reflect the cultural heritage of the area. I shot this in Trona, California last year. I choose this picture because the town is extremely isolated. Trona was set up purely for mining in 1913 and is named after the chemical Trona. The town has this chemical feel to it, like it’s been burnt. Nothing green can grow there as it’s so hot and the soil is extremely acidic. There’s something crazy about the combination of infertile soil and a settlement. Brutal, naturally I loved it. Mad love to everyone that’s taken part in the auction both artists, bidders and watchers.
