It looks dramatic, as if it is a still from a movie. She seems to be longing for something or someone in that house in the distance. In reality, that house was hers. That is, the inspiration and partial model for this painting lived there. She was Anna Christina Olson and sometimes Andrew Wyeth would see her crawling along on the ground like this, from the window of that very house in Cushing, Maine. He had been working on a painting in her house. He knew her well. She features in several of his paintings, even though in this one, the model for the torso and head was his wife Betsy. Anna Christina was partially paralysed by a degenerative muscle condition, possibly polio. But she disliked wheelchairs and preferred to move around by pulling herself along on the ground. Wyeth once wrote of her: “The challenge to me, was to do justice to her extraordinary conquest of a life which most people would consider hopeless.” . Every now and again you make work that just seems to land in the right place. The very nature of using oil is that it’s unpredictable. Painting is just a conversation you have with an object. After all it’s just coloured bits of oil on wood with canvas. The joy of painting is when you feel you got it right, it’s like you’ve reached an mutual agreement of how things should sit with this thing. I’ve always thought the joy is equivalent to throwing a jigsaw puzzle in the air and it all lands in the exact place it should do...it can feel like a total fluke. I always say you make one decent painting every 3 years that generate all the things you were after within your abilities and craft. Like climbing a point on a rocky edge you were dying to get to for years but then you might slip down another four steps again. I would always use my dad as a model and myself. Purely because it’s felt way easier to distort someones face you feel completely comfortable with and then they don’t complain about not looking good. Here are two old pieces from 1999 to 2009. A head self portrait and a full figure of my father who always had the most utter patience to model for me. Le Crabe by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1869 🖌 In Le Crabe, painted between 1868 and 1869, Bouguereau shows a young fisher girl casually playing with a small black crab. Unlike Bouguereaus later paintings of peasant girls who confront the viewer with their arresting gazes, the child here is wholly occupied with toying with the small creature, unaware of any audience. Her strikingly lifelike hair falls upon her shoulders, also a variation from the majority of his subjects with their upswept locks.Like all of his peasant children, however, the young girl is depicted barefoot, her perfectly painted, unsoiled feet free from any signs of work or wear, symbols of her idealized existence. Le Crabe is rare in Bouguereaus body of work, featuring a vast coastal scene behind his more well-known imagery of the young peasant girl. The atmospheric beauty of the background showcases the artists skills as a painter; his use of light and shadow accurately captures the dramatic recession into space. Bouguereau was likely inspired by the landscape of Brittany (possibly by the streams of Fouesnant) where he regularly spent the summer months from 1866 until the war of 1870. The model for the young girl is Emilienne Cesil-Biegler, the daughter of Bouguereaus housekeeper at the time. What are your thoughts? ARCHIVE // In May 2004, Gray New York presented Willem de Kooning: Paintings from the Forties and Fifties, an exhibition focused on the artist’s earlier years of experimentation with abstraction and figuration that evaded any definable movement or style. . In the late 1940s, de Kooning—whose work has been the subject of more than ten exhibitions at Gray—was pursuing biomorphic forms and abstract swathes of bright colors that could be read as swirling, fractured landscapes. Throughout the early 1950s, however, de Kooning found his paint strokes adamantly returning to the figural, coalescing into often female figures, such as in Two Women, 1953 and Woman (Green), 1953-55. And yet, not longer after painting his iconic 1950s figural works, he moved on once again to entirely new abstract territory. This ever-evolving conception of what his painting should be fits with what de Kooning stated in a 1951 talk at The Museum of Modern Art: “Personally, I do not need a movement.” . 1. these two have been dusted off and are on their way to a dear friend in colombia - i can’t imagine them in a better home!! @nicolasuribeb asked if i had anything forgotten, sitting behind a wood stove - little did he know how astute his selection was! i made these last winter, after months of misery being curled up in a ball on the ground in front of a wood stove, alone in a rural rental that i had moved to in order to work. ironically, a few months into it i ended up completely incapacitated with a now chronic stomach disability. i’ve always been thin - but i got pretty darn sallow looking. so obviously i made a few sketches to document! i kept imagining back home, and the view of a nearby steeple from my old studio. a few days later Notre Dame burnt down, so in a way this was my preemptive memorial. happy to be part of your collection, @nicolasuribeb :) - @timothypwilson on Instagram

Ведь изначально меня и @vadimlipskih нанимали как педагогов, которые будут преподавать не только студентам, уезжающим в Украину, но и всем остальным по-возможности 🙈 （а если конкретно - давать мк по гуаши）. И вот как раз этого то мы и не умели🤕. И пришлось быстренько учиться. Благо было у кого🙂 Китайцы - лучшие гуашисты（если можно так назвать 🤔）. До приезда в Китай я и знать не знала, что ВОТ ТАК можно писать гуашью（имеется ввиду работы китайцев - не мои 😄). Мы попали на недельный тренинг для педагогов по написанию натюрмортов （несколько дней были абсолютно убойными - с 9 утра до 8 вечера 🙈🙊）. Далее - самостоятельные тренировки несколько месяцев. Что ж, так как у них, у нас все же не вышло. Вышло как-то по-своему 🤓 Хотя нам твердили: Нам надо вот так и никак иначе. В общем - отстали от нас с этой гуашью в конце концов, но опыт остался. Делюсь некоторыми 🤗 Все натюрморты выполнены с фото. Китайское обучение до академии построено именно на рисовании по фото.
