Don Shula, an icon of Miami sports, passed away at his home today at the age of 90. Condolences to his wife Mary Anne and the rest of the Shula family. Shula remains the winningest head coach in NFL history (347), and the only coach to ever go undefeated. To call him legend would be an understatement. Viva JIMI! “September 18th, 2020 marks the 50th year since the passing of my favorite musical artist of all time, Jimi Hendrix. I consider the “Band of Gypsys” album to be his master class in literally everything that can be done with an electric guitar. This live album was cut at the Fillmore East with Billy Cox and the late great Buddy Miles, who I also got to play with as a teenager, we even played a number of songs off this album way back then. Most of the finals takes on the album were from their show on New Years Eve, 1969. Jimi would pass away in 1970. This was yet another tumultuous era in our countries history when it was ripping itself apart. We felt like it was the right time to perform this album front to back. Our concert was an unannounced live music event at one of our favorite venues, The Colony, in Woodstock New York. The state of NY still only allows “incidental” music events. Nonetheless we had an enthusiastic crowd that observed all the health standards and social distancing rules and we rang out these notes for a group of enthusiastic and loving people over labor day weekend. We didn’t rehearse any of the music. We just did a quick warm up set of my music, took a break, and came on and let it rip. No edits. No redos. A huge thank you to my amazing band and team. Brett Bass on Bass and Eric Kalb on drums brought the heat that this trio record requires, and our telepathic interplay that we have developed over the last couple years helped make this high wire act dance the way that it should. Charlie Martinez, my partner in all my production and audio projects, showed up with a mobile rig and captured and mixed it all. Chris Pizzolo was there to film us with a steady hand in a cinema verite style and also edited this video and helped us to promote it. IAN MC LAGAN & ROGER: 2014? Touring Beck’s acoustic oriented Morning Phase album. Smokey Hormel, our long time band member and all things fretted historian, of course knew Ian from I believe a Rick Rubin project they worked on together. He invited Ian down to this Austin City Limits performance. I had seen Ian’s “Bump Band” perform in Austin several times and had been as inspired by them as much as anything he had done w all of the greats he’d already been associated w in the past. starstruck is an understatement. In person he could not have made me feel more at ease as he was the literal fun-lovin, easy-goin’ cartoon character and epitome of the classic rock, British Blues-er ethos. We talked for hours and then we were both wisked away. He died within the year. This year – october 9th – John would celebrate his 80. Birthday. I miss him very much and I think often of the many experiences we shared . For example singing with him together in duet of his cover version of “Bring It On Home to Me” was very exciting for me. It was part of a medley on his Rock ‘n’ Roll Album (Release 1975). The amazing orginial was sang by Sam cook and Lou Rawls. My new artprint reflects this very special moment. We’ve come a long way with the language we use to talk about our trans brothers and sisters, but we still have a long way to go. Billy Tipton was an American jazz musician, bandleader, and talent broker. For decades, Tipton assumed a male gender identity. Tiptons female birth sex (AFAB) was not publicly revealed until after his death, and the revelation came as a surprise to family and friends. Tiptons music career began in the mid-1930s when he led a band for radio broadcasts. He played in various dance bands in the 1940s and recorded two trio albums for a small record label in the mid-1950s. Thereafter, he worked as a talent broker. Tipton stopped performing in the late 1970s due to arthritis. Tiptons sex was reportedly concealed from the four women who would later call themselves Mrs. Tipton. Tipton kept the secret of his extrinsic sexual characteristics from them by telling them he had been in a serious car accident that resulted in damaged genitals and broken ribs. The existence of Trans people is not something new, they have always been here, are real and valid.
