Julia Margaret Cameron (British (born India), Calcutta 1815–1879 Kalutara, Ceylon) When one of Julia Margaret Camerons daughters handed her her first camera she said: It may amuse you, Mother, to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater. From that moment, Cameron, forty-eight, took the fun seriously. Cameron, similar to Victorian photographers of the time, in his images imitated popular scenes romantic and pre-Raphaelist paintings. In the particular case of Cameron, his portraits were different, representing that classic universe, through sensitive compositions about female beauty with a more real appearance manifesting human qualities. From that experience, for example, the portraits of Ellen Terry, Alice Pleasance Liddell, the Alice of Lewis Carroll, Julia Jackson, her niece who would be the mother of Virginia Woolf stand out. She was a photographer who in her beginnings book important battles against the purist paternalism of the photographic community of the time that criticizes her work for not being technically perfect, was not sharp, reflected a careless manipulation. Cameron was focused on his speech and used photography as a medium. From that perspective, his work marked a powerful discourse that changed the way people look at girls and women with more natural portraits by showing them disheveled, half dressed, with everyday attitudes with the idea of reflecting more their natures and hers. #Onthisday in 1895, the Executive Council of the Republic of Hawaii paroled #Liliuokalani to her home, Washington Place. She had been arrested earlier that year on January 16, 1895. In early February she was put on trial and convicted of “not informing the Republic of Hawaii Government that her supporters were plotting to return her to power.” Her sentence of a $5,000 fine and 5 years hard labor was immediately commuted to house arrest. She was imprisoned in the Makai Diamond head room on the second floor of the Palace, then known as the Executive Building, from January 16, 1895 until she was paroled at 3:25 pm on September 6, 1895. Conditions of her parole included: - She was to “live in a quiet, unostentatious manner and to abstain from having political meetings or other gatherings at her home or attending such meetings elsewhere.” - She was not allowed to be away from her home Washington Place overnight unless she had written consent from the government. - Visitors were limited to personal friends and those visiting to conduct business. – Her staff was fixed at 13 men, 8 women, and their children. In February 1896, as a reward for having faithfully abided by these restrictions, her parole was modified. She was given permission to leave Oahu if she had written consent of the Republic of Hawaii. #MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. 🇩🇰 I dag er det 150 år siden, at Christian 10. kom til verden. Kort før midnat mandag den 26. september 1870 nedkom den 18-årige Kronprinsesse Lovisa med en søn på Charlottenlund Slot nord for København. Da solen næste dag stod op over København, var det til lyden af 21 salutskud fra Batteriet Sixtus på Holmen, der bekendtgjorde, at Danmark havde fået en ny tronarving. Nyheden om den kongelige fødsel spredte sig hurtigt i befolkningen, og i sin dagbog registrerede eventyrdigteren H.C. Andersen Prinsens ankomst med ordene: ”Saae en Ildkugle paa Himlen. Inat før 12 blev en Prinds født af Kronprindsessen, hele Byen flaggede i Dag i det smukke Veir”. Samme Andersen fik senere på året lejlighed til at forære den lille Prins sine illustrerede eventyr - ”det er vist nok den første Bog han har faaet” konstaterede den verdensberømte digter efterfølgende. I anledning af Christian 10.s 150-års fødselsdag frigiver Kongehuset en række billeder fra Kongens barndom. Derudover er det nu muligt offentligt at læse det fødselsbrev, som Kronprins Frederik (8.) i henhold til Kongelovens artikel 39 sendte til sin far, Christian 9., kort tid efter sønnens fødsel. Da Prins Christian (10.) kom til verden, havde hans farfar været konge af Danmark i næsten syv år. Der skulle dog gå 35 år, før han blev Kronprins, og derfra endnu seks år til han selv kunne bestige den danske trone som den tredje regent af den glücksborgske linje. Med valgsproget ”Min Gud, mit Land, min Ære regerede han Danmark fra 1912 og frem til 1947. Kongens regeringstid blev således indrammet af de to verdenskrige. Per Corpus de lany 1948, els Gegants van estrenar vestits nous, dissenyats per lartista olotí Lluís Carbonell i Colom. Els vestits, duna gran qualitat, van ser rebuts amb una gran acceptació, donant amb els anys un caràcter propi a les figures. A part, lescultor també aprofità per restaurar els bustos del Gegant i la Gegantessa. Trenta-cinc anys després, lany 1983, es van haver de renovar els vestits i, tot i que la intenció era fer una rèplica exacta, no es va aconseguir. “Properties of the Hammer”, a self portrait developed in a darkroom by me in 1993. I was 19 years old, and I knew there was something deeply rotten in the area of Texas I grew up in. Insidious behavior and thoughts can be concealed by Southern pleasantries, the pulpits of churches, and suburban attics. I didn’t understand what white supremacy was in 1993, but I knew there was something invisible operating on my body. I could feel that much. My folks never sat me down to talk about it, but I was starting to piece something together from observing their relationships with white folks over the years. I was never called nigger to my face (like my parents were), but you don’t have to be. There’s a zillion other ways to be called that. I was beginning to get that too. I was naive then and running on pure intuition. My need to express some growing unease came out in my pencil, brush, or camera whether I wanted it to or not. 155 years ago on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger informed the people of Galveston, TX that slavery had ended. Sometimes called Liberation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates that day. Although not yet a national holiday, it is recognized in nearly every state. • On Juneteenth 2020, we share two daguerreotypes, each depicting an African American. Dating to the 1840s, the first was created more than a decade before the American Civil War began, while slavery was still legal in the southern United States. It features an elderly woman who appears to be in her 70s, placing her date of birth in the 18th century. She wears a white lace bonnet and collar and a dark-colored dress. Although she – and her photographer – remain unidentified, the daguerreotype speaks volumes about the woman, particularly her status as a literate member of society: she holds a book and eyeglasses and one arm rests near a stack of books. • @zoebgarrett researched the other daguerreotype, an image of Jeremiah A. Wade, a Civil War veteran from Ohio. Born in 1829 to parents who identified as “Mulatto” in census records, Wade did, too, until early 1862, when he listed his race as “White” to enlist in the Union Army when black Americans could not yet serve. He died in 1898 and was survived by 7 children. Wade’s photograph was taken by James Presley Ball, a well-known African-American photographer who documented the horrors and triumphs of life for 19th-century black Americans. He documented lynchings and photographed Frederick Douglass as well as celebrations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. #TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua?
