Illustrations from the late 12th or early 13th century Guthlac Roll, depicting scenes from the story of Saint Guthlac (British Library, Harley Roll Y 6). Born into a noble Mercian family around the year 674, Guthlac was one of the most prominent early Anglo-Saxon saints. According to his biographer Felix, who wrote shortly after the saints death in 714/5, Guthlac spent much of his youth as a soldier before abandoning his worldly ambitions and becoming a monk, and later a hermit. His hermitage was located on the remote island of Crowland in the Lincolnshire fens, a place that was apparently inhospitable due to it being haunted by demons. Do Castelo que convém a Lisboa Francisco de Holanda (1517-1584), foi um escritor, desenhador e um teórico da arte português, remetendo o seu apelido para nacionalidade de seu pai António d’Holanda, retratista e iluminador régio. Devido a um talento precoce e a uma posição de relevância na corte de D. João III, aos 20 anos foi enviado pelo monarca a Itália, para «ver e desenhar as fortalezas e obras mais insignes e ilustres dela». O impacto desta estadia, marcada pela imersão no pleno renascimento italiano, contacto com artistas como Miguel Ângelo e influência da cultura humanista irá refletir-se para sempre nas suas obras. Com a morte de D. João III, Holanda tenta manter-se relevante numa nova e jovem corte real e assim, em 1571, dedicava a obra “Da Fábrica que falece à cidade de Lisboa”, «Ao muyto Serenissimo e Christianissimo Rey D. Sebastião». Neste tratado de arquitetura e urbanismo, apresenta ideias, sugestões e obras, uma visão para a cidade de Lisboa. A maioria destes projetos não será materializada, como foi o caso de um novo castelo. Uma ideia essencial do livro é a defesa da cidade. Assim, a par de novas fortificações que abraçassem toda a cidade, El-Rei deveria mandar fazer uma fortaleza «fortíssima e inexpugnável em lugar do Castelo Velho». A ideia era construir uma gigantesca fortificação hexagonal, com 6 baluartes nos vértices, que englobaria as colinas do Castelo, da Graça e de S. Gens. No centro, no lugar do antigo castelo, estariam uns «Paços Fortes» de dimensão colossal. Seriam múltiplas fortalezas em uma só. Uma muralha exterior, de planta quadrada, com quatro torreões cilíndricos, em tijolo rebocado, rodeada por um fosso com água, protegia uma grande construção palaciana de planta semelhante. Dentro desta, uma outra fortaleza também quadrada, mas com torres hexagonais e, finalmente, tudo coroado por uma outra fortificação de planta hexagonal. À defesa, juntava-se o poder ofensivo dos múltiplos canhões que espreitavam pelos merlões e canhoneiras.
