We return this Saturday to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master from 2012, with cinematography by Mihai Mălaimare Jr. and, in particular, the use of 65mm film. Today we’re looking at the lighting in the jail scene. Dodd and Freddy have just been arrested and brought to the jail cells to await arraignment, and Freddy is having a difficult time coping with unfolding events. From being arrested, to his anger at the police for arresting Dodd, and his anger at Dodd for being arrested, the scene centers around anger and the absence of control. The cells were in the San Pedro courthouse. The space was small – a hallway, some cells, and all lighting needed to be installed. In the hallway were Par 64 Parcans, fitted with 1000W bulbs. Check out the hallway scene above for how this light translated to 65mm film vs the raw images closer to what the eye might see when looking at the lighting set up. Anderson chose to shoot The Master on 65mm film, with lenses needing T-stops of 4 and 5.6, so huge amounts of light were needed for every shot. The averaged footcandles as a base for this lighting set up is about 100fc. Inside the cells, Chimera Pancakes were used overhead, also with 1000W bulbs, while some Arri 750 open faces with chimeras were used as backlights. The Chimera Pancake is generally a great light, but in tight spaces with close-up faces it works particularly well because of the billowing diffusion, and the resulting even spread of light over the faces of the actors. In the above scenes, the Chimera diffuses the light evenly onto both Freddy and Lancaster, re-creating the illusion of poor ambient lighting, but still allowing the audience to see the faces in a softer, more pleasing light. On film, the light is clean and soft, leaving room for the full expression of both Freddy’s and Dodd’s rage. At the heart of my ShotOver stabilized gimbal system is often the 50-1000 zoom lens with the 8K RED Helium. As the lens does not allow a wide open aperture it is great to see the great low light capability of the Helium sensor. It is just the best true full frame 35mm telephoto set up for wildlife. With the direction of the guys of @aggressivetv, we designed a real-time basement environment to be synchronized with virtual and physical cameras to create an immersive and fully interactive set to shoot. With this Virtual Production technique they were able to reduce the number of crew required to be present on set. But the main point is that we could eliminate the need for a green screen to integrate an actor into a CG environment, saving also a lot of post production time like tracking and keying. The LED tiles work also to light the Actor, so the sense of integration and reflections feels more natural and specially blended through the lens of the camera. The virtual set created in @notchvfx enabled custom depth-of- field and dynamic lighting effects driven by the LED tiles, real-time video guests appearances, as well as a slew of in-show animations and easter eggs that we were able to trigger on cue. With all the visuals being rendered in real-time, last minute adjustments to art direction, virtual «propping and set dressing», and lighting, could be done smoothly and efficiently on the day. Because of the entire entertainment and event industry vanishing temporarily, I missed an opportunity to play in Las Vegas. And I started thinking of the time I played in Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and all around the amazing venues in San Diego. 😞 But here I was, in my garage. A place Ive spent countless hours building equipment, troubleshooting, learning and practicing to be a better DJ. Ive DJd here before, but never like this. My biggest audiences were my dogs laying on the floor and my family listening inside the house. This time was for real, but in a much different way. The audience, mostly my friends; texting me in real-time words of encouragement, praise and even a few requests. I was playing music from the 90s, a time I hold dear because those were my formative years, my high school and college years. A time (relatively speaking) of little responsibility and a carefree attitude. I sat there, while Mazzy Star played, remembering when I played that same song 25 years ago, in a tiny, only-room-for two-people, college radio studio; my whole life ahead of me. And I had to wipe away a tear. 😥 Was I right back at the beginning? In a way, yes. Life, for now, is right back to where it was when I was playing 90s music in the 90s. Unsure. Uncertainty. I always feel when our hands are forced, we have two choices. Do our best work, or fail. I think this is that time. Its time to choose to flourish or fold. Yes, it sucks right now. But maybe years from now, well look back and this will be the moment that created the path we were destined for anyway. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra hosted a special July 4th America Strong concert, “Celebrating the Best of America in a Challenging Time.” The FWSO 4th of July, #virtualconcert in #FortWorth was televised by WFAA. The special concert included guest artists from the Fort Worth Opera, The Cliburn, and Texas Ballet Theater, with a special appearance by Broadway star baritone and Fort Worth favorite Major Attaway 🎼 The #FWSO concert was mixed and mastered by #OnstageSystem’s Fredy Monis George.
