Mein letzter Mental-Post. Versprochen. Die meisten wollen „sowas ja nicht sehen“, obwohl ich gern transparent mit sowas euch gegenüber wär. Der letzte ist nun 1 Jahr her. Any Updates? Ich hab Respekt vor dem was ich tue, manchmal gefällt es mir sogar noch. Aber selten bin ich stolz auf etwas oder zufrieden. Echtes Freude zu empfinden lohnt nicht. Vorfreuden bewahrheiten sich nie, Versprechen zählen selten. Die oft gleiche repetitive Scheisse geht auf den Sack. Ich vermisse kein Ziel, ich vermisse Herausforderung. Ich hab großen Respekt vor euch, manchmal genieße ich sogar den Austausch mit euch. Manchmal hilft euer Feedback weiterzukommen, doch Zeit zum verinnerlichen bleibt nicht. Ihr seid mir wichtig. Als Zuschauer & als wertvoller geschätzter Teil meiner Community. Doch geht ihr mir gleichzeitig auch oft einfach nur auf den Sack. Ich vermisse kein Social oder Network, ich vermisse Inspiration. Ich bin nach all den Jahren Internet mit meinem Dasein gerade groß genug um in der Wahrnehmung überleben & weitermachen zu können, aber klein & unbedeutend genug um schnell irrelevant zu werden. Es ist ein Privileg aber ebenso eine Bürde. Auf der einen Seite wünsch ich mir ehrliche Anerkennung oder Wertschätzung und kein „Honig ums Maul Geschmiere“. Inzwischen würde ein einfaches/ehrliches „Danke“ schon reichen. Auf der anderen Seite ist auch oberflächlicher, verlogener Alltagstrott & es Agenturen/Herstellern recht machen zu müssen in Ordnung, weil man es halt so kennt und damit man endlich Ruhe hat. Eine Zerreißprobe aus so vielen Kleinigkeiten. Am Ende ists ne undefinierbare Suppe, die die ganze Zeit herumsteht, gegessen werden müsste, kalt & dann ungenießbar wird. Trotzdem muss man sie löffeln. Also: verzeiht bitte, wenn ich nicht immer das machen kann, was ich eigentlich könnte, was ich machen wollen würde oder dass ich nicht immer so sein kann, wie ich sein möchte oder wie ihr mich kennt. Enorm viel Zeit & Energie stecke ich in Andere und Anderes, dass ich keine Zeit finde den eigentlich wichtigsten Kampf bei all dem Ganzen anzugehen: mit mir selbst. So...I just dug a big hole in my #lawn. Confession: I don’t love lawns. They use a ton of water, they’re carbon neutral at best, they’ve replaced indigenous grasses that are far better for local ecosystems, and my sensitive ears have seriously had enough of lawnmowers. Even so, a small part of me was shocked at the idea of cutting a hole right in the middle of a section of lawn. It felt somehow forbidden! 🎶 Breakin the law, breakin the law 🎶 But check out what’s going there: raspberries! Even if they weren’t totally delicious, they’d still be better for our backyard ecosystem: they attract birds and bugs and kids! And that’s the worst thing about lawns: they’re often a waste of space, to be looked at and tended but not touched or used. I want every part of our yard to be both beautiful AND functional. So where the kids play on the climber, I LOVE 💚💚 our lawn! And at this point we’re all just going with the flow. A lot of people have changed around their vision of a dream wedding because they felt that now more than ever was an important time to still celebrate LOVE with their families, even if it looks so much different. And we’re just grateful to be part of it. Our staff are being extra careful from the moment they load in and through the end of the night when they load out. This one hit below the belt. Dave you were more than a colleague you were a damn good friend- a nurturer, a kind and gentle soul. Punk and anti fascist asf. You always took me seriously in an industry that time and time again tried to put me down. You backed me up in many rooms where people looked at me like I was too young, too female, too latina, too working class to be respected in my position. You put me on, you taught me carpentry when I wanted to learn in your tiny studio. You donated your time to teach me things, just because I asked. You were so so patient. When I was having a mental breakdown during filming lucky grandma you helped me cast a mold to pour some rubber scissors. I was beside myself because I couldn’t rent them and the deadline was coming fast. I remember it was the one of the nights you had your sons, and one of them was trying to open a geode. You gave him protective gear to keep him safe and encouraged him to best figure out how to open the rock. Much like me you sought to give him the tools to succeed on his own. You were a great dad- you taught your sons how to be curious about the world, inquisitive, respectful. You taught them to champion the underdog and not always to believe what they hear. You taught them about the consequences of their actions and about their privilege. You were a hard working blue collar kind of guy but a big softie. I’m so gravely hurt at the loss of you- so sad to know that when work starts up again I won’t have an excuse to call you to make some sick ramp or wall fixture or what ever we would have cooked up. At the beginning of the pandemic right after I got covid and got better, you asked if I wanted to take a bike ride over the bridge to see how much of a ghost town Manhattan was. I said no because I didn’t want to get you sick. I regret that. I regret the lost opportunity to be there for you when maybe you needed it most. We were going to trade sewing lessons for more carpentry lessons. We had plans. I wish you had told me you needed me. Fulfilled that recent promise to myself to get lost in the Pine Barrens more often today with @invinciblesummerfarms (Steph) and @erb.design (Eric). Steph and I were looking for neglected old fruit plants in the ghost towns and former migrant camps scattered throughout the Pines. Eric came along for the fun. We found Florence, but couldnt find Rome (two of the former camps at Whitesbog once inhabited by the Italian laborers who used to pick the cranberries by hand). We did find plenty of ripe cranberries (see 3rd photo), which was great -- both because theyre delicious, and because I was hoping EFN would be able to offer cranberry seeds again soon, and now we should be able to this winter! We also saw a recently hatched turtle nest (guessing a snapper) -- photo 4, and a close up of an egg in photo 5, with cranberry vines snaking past it -- an abandoned old cherry orchard (one tree in photo 6), a very late flowering blueberry, or close blueberry relative (photos 7 and 8), and an Azalea Caterpillar (photo 9), also known as Datana major, which turns into a pretty moth, but just loves munching on azaleas, blueberries, and red oaks, all of which are common there. And, in photo 10, some funky red-tipped lichen! We were only actually lost for a brief spell, while trying to find the supposed pear and apple orchard near the cherry orchard (an old man out hunting quail gave us the tip that led to the former Anderson farmstead), but we found our way back pretty quick. No run-ins with the Jersey Devil either. If anyone has any tips on old apples, pears, cherries, plums, peaches, grapes, or figs, out there among the Pines, please send them our way! These old homesteads may prove pivotal once we launch the @lostcrop project in the coming days! E lo penso ancora effettivamente, ma quello che ho capito poi é che non potevo cambiare i prof ma potevo farmi capire meglio. Dovevo essere io a cambiare tono e modo di raccontare la mia versione, per essere capito. Quando poi non cerano più i prof da accusare erano i miei capi, e mi sono reso conto che passare 8 ore al giorno a combattere non era salutare... e alla fine vince sempre chi prende la decisione finale. i’m def down for #beckyalbertalliappreciation. Some of you know I landed my agent via a pitch contest, #DVpit. I had only entered one other contest (a diff project, not OOA) & it resulted in nibbles but nothing more. So, I was reluctant to enter #DVpit, thinking it would be another exercise in heartbreak. After all, I’d sent out story after story only to receive every rejection. My fave: “you write well but I’m not sure there’s a market for this kind of story”—umm, you mean coming of age?? I decided I had nothing to lose (esp since #DVpit promotes diverse voices). A few hours into the contest, I had two YA writers (neither of whom I knew) boost my pitch—& yep, Becky was one. She said “someone needs to make this a book”. Later, when OPPOSITE OF ALWAYS was indeed on its way to becoming “a book”, she was the first person to shout me out in an interview—I have it bookmarked!—& she went on to blurb my debut! And while we only used a few words from her quote, her praise STILL warms my soul. She didn’t have to engage w/ me at all, let alone use her platform to amplify my story. But that’s Becky. She’s gracious, incredibly thoughtful, & generous. Even recently, when she knew I was having a hard time, she reached out w/ much-appreciated support. I met Becky for the 1st time at a book conference. I wasn’t on any panels, I was just attending bec Becky and Angie Thomas were there, and they were/are BOOK ROYALTY. Becky prob doesn’t remember; tbh, I barely recall what I said. But I did manage: “Hi, I love your book. I hope this isn’t weird but it was one of 5 books I kept on my desk the entire time I was drafting OPPOSITE, that’s how much it means to me.” The rest of that weekend I walked around hoping she didn’t think I was an idiot, haha. Now Becky’s books are no longer on my desk. Because my desk is too small & too messy, ha. But her books are front & center on the shelf just above it. Often I glance up & smile. The couple on the left recently sold a profitable bakery in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. After cashing-in, the bakers cooked up a new scheme and decided to move to Phoenicia, New York. They’ve traded in flour for flowers and are not looking back. The couple on the right also hit it big before moving to Phoenicia. A distant relative offered to help finance an Applebee’s in downtown Brooklyn turning the young couple into business owners overnight. Their empire continued when they franchised a 2 Bro’s Pizza next door, and a Tony Luke’s Philadelphia Cheesesteak across the street. For their next investment they’re eyeing a dilapidated cellphone emporium in the Fulton Mall and hope to turn it into a coffee shop that takes customers’ compost. The owners of “Flatbush & Fulton LLC” are resting on their well earned laurels and have left the bustle of the big city for some well earned peace and quiet. Thanks for all the birthday love, my friends. In these weird times, it feels selfish to still consider something as personal and low-stakes as a birthday to take up emotional weight on my heart, but having so many reminders of the value of life and friendship and tender, delicate openness helps me recall why we celebrate birthdays at all: it’s a way to simply say “I’m grateful that you were born, and I personally believe life would be worse without you.” Thank you all for the reminder, and I genuinely wish the same kindness on every one of you, no matter the day. It’s also a moment to reflect back on the good, the bad, and the general day-to-day of the previous year. From July 30th, 2019 to 2020, I: 1. Wrote two feature scripts 2. Shot five short films 3. Fostered 1 pregnant dog, help birth 5 puppies, raised them for 6 weeks, and ultimately adopted one 4. Completed one year of therapy. 5. Confronted my anxious attachment style in regards to my romantic and familial relationships 6. Learned how to let go of some control in my creative and personal life (still learning, it’s gonna be a minute) 7. Lived with a partner who has easily become my better half 8. Told my family I loved them more often (also still learning, forgetting to say it regularly for 30 years is a hard habit to break) 9. Learned to believe in benevolence when confronted with mystery 10. Listened eagerly, because it’s what every straight white cis male should be doing these days. The immersion is a balance of pre-recorded content, workshops and live Q&A’s, lectures and practices. The theme is compassionate practice and self-care through yoga. We’ll be offering meditation, yoga nidra, sequencing templates and anatomy tutorials. We are delighted that @mindfulyogapsychologist will also be sharing the science of compassion with us and offering a group session to help process and embody the themes we’re working with. Its my birthday tomorrow, and I turn 28. I am blessed, crushingly sad, worried about the world, and overjoyed all at once in this moment. I believe though, that I should carve some space to allow celebration in me and for me. This is a lesson I have been trying to learn in general, from many people. In this moment I am hearing this lesson in my head spoken through the voices of @muggsfogarty @detroitphoenix @writeminddet and @crochetypoet . The voices are telling me to shut up, sit down, and let people care for me sometimes. So in that vein, and since I hate digital meetups, it is my humble request that as opposed to writing Happy Birthday on my timeline or texting me Happy Birthday, instead you do one of 4 things: 1) Share a good memory that you have with me (pictures encouraged). 2) Send me a compliment you feel about me but havent shared. 3) Share a lesson you have learned from me. 4) Offer me a raincheck for a specific activity to be executed once on the other side of this social distance. Welcome to @arrowkidsband :: I’m lucky to have an array of creative endeavors as a songwriter, producer and artist.
