This stunning watercolour was painted by the French artist Eugène Lami. Dated 1866, the work is characteristic of Lami’s richly coloured aristocratic scenes. The figures wear late seventeenth-century costume, and the setting recalls (but does not depict) the Staircase of the Ambassadors at Versailles, built in the 1670s; the scene does not seem to represent a particular historical event. As depicted by artist Alexandre Serebriakoff around 1950, Patricia Lopez-Willshaw’s suite at Hôtel Rodocanachi, her residence at 14, rue du Centre, in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The first image is her small, elaborate bedroom, to which she guided the smitten playwright Jean-Pierre Gredy one night in 1953 (see previous post), an amorous event that launched their decade-plus romance. The boiserie was painted with designs inspired by Baroque printmaker-draftsman Jacques Callot, and the floor was paved with blue-and-white glazed tiles. Next to this space was the lighthearted dressing room, its walls and stepped ceiling painted to resemble marble and hung with flower paintings—love the plants blooming on the iron demilune balcony. At the far end of the dressing room is one of the eminently copiable design elements at the 1903 house, which was built by and for Greco-British music critic and amateur designer Paul Rodocanachi: curtained french doors that open to reveal Patricia’s mirrored bath, outfitted with a marble bath and basin as well as a Chiavari-style chair of exaggerated height. Fun fact: Since yesterday’s post I’ve learned that before Gredy met Patricia—whom he wanted to marry—the playwright had a lover from Floyd County, Kentucky, a former GI named William Dudley McHone, who was a cousin of my maternal great-grandmother’s. (Gredy and McHone would reignite their relationship, aprés Patricia, and create a couple of lovely houses and gardens.)
