I’m sitting here in bed going through these photos of them on my Instagram and I feel so far away from them now. I want to go back & sit with her, just hold her & cry because I don’t know how to save her You have no idea how it feels going into this darkness, seeing them like this. Scroll back up & really look at her, look at her eyes & her babies...are we really doing this to them? I have literally died inside. I’ll never feel real happiness while they are suffering, I can feel them in my soul every minute of the day, behind every “happy moment” all my jokes & laughs, she’s there. All of them are, sitting so heavy inside my chest. I’ve said this for years & it’s still the same, even though I appear happier now, I’ll never leave the darkness. My friend told me a few months ago that my ex Jessie messaged him while we were together saying “I’ve lost her bro, she’s gone into the darkness from this & she’s not coming back” hearing that really hit me I did mushrooms once to try & release some of this, because seeing a psychologist just doesn’t help, they really just don’t get it. During the trip I was hanging off my bed crying in so much pain, my friend was telling me it’s ok to let go now, that I can’t carry all of this but I can still fight for them. I was crying hysterically saying no into my pillow curled up “I’m staying with them” If I leave the darkness it means I’ve let go of them. I refuse to just get on with my life. That’s why I keep going back If you haven’t been inside & met them like this you will never understand what if feels like. The suffering in the air as you walk toward these sheds. Opening the door & seeing all of them. I can’t smell the night air without thinking of them now There is a real darkness in this world & it’s us, we are doing this to them by choice. We have chosen to be evil, allow the industry to hide them away, package their bodies & feed us lies. I refuse to let them win. This needs to end. I don’t know why anyone would be ok with paying for this to happen to someone else. This is her life, this is her soul, her body. Who are we to do this. I had the pleasure of capturing the relationship between Little Girl and Ethan. Little Girl is a black bear cub with hydrocephalus, a condition where liquid builds up around the brain. Because of her condition, she is unable to perform many of the basic tasks necessary for survival in the wild. Lucky for Little Girl, she was rescued by the Kilham Bear Center in New Hampshire, a facility dedicated to rescuing abandoned black bear cubs and releasing them into the wild which they have been doing with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Dept. for 25 years. Due to her condition, she may be their first bear that is unable to be released into the wild, but that has not stopped Ethan from building a unique friendship with her. Everyday Ethan visits Little Girl and walks with her from her covered resting shed to an open outdoor area. With difficulty controlling her body, she often tumbles down and struggles to see all obstacles. These were the photos I submitted to be a finalist in @natgeo’s Assignment Inspiration. I took these images while I was living out of backpack for a year in South East Asia. At the time I didn’t really know what I was doing or where I would be from week to week. Randomly, I connected with Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and ended up taking photos for them for about a month. This weeks black bear death on I-65 demonstrates need for wildlife corridors and safe crossing designs. ⠀ ⠀ A black bear was killed by a motor vehicle Tuesday morning crossing I-65 south of Louisville. Black bear are rare in central Kentucky. This accident demonstrates the need to establish wildlife corridors with protected natural land to allow bear, bobcat and other animals to move safely about in their search for food, shelter, and mates. ⠀ ⠀ Highways and other congested roads designed and built with culverts, underpasses, and wildlife overpasses keep transportation infrastructure from being death traps for mammals, reptiles and other creatures. Over 6,000 motor vehicle collisions with animals reported in Kentucky in 2018/2019, resulted in 6 people killed and 24 seriously injured. Designing roadways and highways to accommodate wildlife movement will save money and lives. ⠀ ⠀ Bernheim is proud of our efforts to establish protected wildlife corridors. Part of the motivation behind the @wyosheepproject is disparity of lamb survival between bighorn sheep herds infected with bacterial pathogens that lead to pneumonia. This year we collared 11 lambs in the Whiskey Herd and 9 in the Jackson Herd. Of those, 1 is alive in Whiskey, while 6 are alive in Jackson. When a lamb collar doesnt move for 6 hours we receive a mortality alert via email and immediately investigate. While we observed some normal causes of death like predation and trauma, most of the Whiskey lambs die of pneumonia. We can almost immediately identify pneumonia deaths in the field by looking at the lungs. Usually, the lungs are discolored and sometimes covered in mucus. We collect samples to send to the Wyoming State Vet Lab to sort out more detail of what pathogens were present and how they killed the lamb. - A lot of people dont know this but feral pigs can grow extremely large. When they are at this size they are very dangerous, they have been known to eat entire sheep if they get onto someones property and the meat is no good from these pigs. Pigs are also very aggressive when hungry. So watch out!
