🐋 Día Nacional de la #BallenaFrancaAustral / Conocé más sobre su historia de conservación en Argentina ⬇️. ⠀ En 1969, Wildlife Conservation Society recibió noticias de la existencia de un pequeño número de ballenas francas en la Península Valdés. Se trataba de animales que se habían salvado de la matanza indiscriminada; en aquella época algunos países aún cazaban estas ballenas en forma clandestina y la especie estaba al borde de la extinción. Inmediatamente, @theWCS decidió poner en marcha un proyecto de investigación de conservación para salvarlas y puso a su cargo al entonces joven investigador, Roger Payne. En el año 1976 se logró la creación por parte del gobierno del Chubut, del Parque Provincial Marino Golfo San José, cuyo objetivo primordial fue la protección de las ballenas. Gracias al resultado de estos esfuerzos, a los cuales se fueron sumado los de otras entidades (Cancillería Argentina, CONICET, Gobierno del Chubut, @icb.argentina, @fundacion_patagonia_natural, entre otros), y al desarrollo de una exitosa industria turística responsable basada en la observación de ballenas, esta población, felizmente, está en franca recuperación. Hoy en día se ha alejado el riesgo de la caza de ballenas francas australes pero la especie sigue enfrentando amenazas. 🚩 Entre ellas, la embestida no intencional por parte de buques que en números crecientes navegan las aguas del Mar Argentino, el enmallamiento en artes de pesca y la contaminación del mar. Ante esta situación, @WCSArgentina continúa realizando estudios para la conservación de esta especie. Uno de los más importantes es el proyecto colaborativo #SiguiendoBallenas, que desde 2014 monitorea las trayectorias de ballenas francas adultas en el Atlántico Sudoccidental a través de dispositivos satelitales, y cuya información será clave para asegurar su protección en el futuro, a través de la creación de Áreas Marinas Protegidas y áreas de manejo con especial cuidado 🌎. The Duke who rescued us A common grouse amongst my friends is that while I write so much about Sir Don, Lizzie, Swamy and the rest of the pack in Dadar Parsi Colony, I have not written a single piece about my first born Duke. On a rainy Wednesday in September 2014, we drove to one of those interminably tall buildings nestling somewhere along the eastern freeway to rescue and adopt a Labrador. Our hearts were filled with trepidation. The climb in the lift to the top floor didn’t help either as the heart raced faster. This dog who was about six months old had been tied up on the terrace and left in the rains by the previous owner and was being fostered. We had just about recovered from a difficult time at home and wondered if this was the right time to do a right thing as neither of us ever had a dog before [though I had grown up with grandparents who loved and adored dogs]. But then the grandparents had sprawling bungalows and we a modest 2 BHK. Two sisters opened the door and a small bundle of beige greeted us. We had sat on their sofa for less than a minute when one of them said “his walk and potty is done”. You can take him now. And so it was. We held his leash and bundled him into the car. His puppy eyes were vacant. It was another ride to another home where he may not be welcome. He kept his chin on my lap and closed his eyes. The first night, none of us slept. He wandered all over the house and we wandered with him wondering what to do. And then slowly he settled down and we did too. My niece named him Duke while the maid [after threatening to leave] called him “Gundu” [the latter translates as fat in Tamil] and fell in love with him. Today in August 2020, it is impossible to believe that Gundu is a total Gunda adored and liked by all who meet him. The joy that he has brought into our lives is ineffable. In Pretty Woman, an acrophobic Richard Gere climbs the fire escape at the end of the movie with flowers in his hand and asks Julia Roberts “so what happens after he climbed up the tower and rescues her? According to a release from the Centre for Whale Research, the newest member of the Southern Resident killer whale (SRKW) community is the calf of J41. . Косатки никогда не нападают на людей в дикой природе, но 2020 необычный год. ⠀ Совершенно нетипичное поведение для этих умнейших животных началось в июле в Гибралтарском проливе. Косатки приплывают в этот район за тунцом в летний и осенний период. Обычно встречи с этими животными вызывают восторг. Но в этом году он быстро сменялся на страх. ⠀ Косатки сначала спокойно плыли рядом с судном и радовали людей своим присутствием, а потом начинали окружать и кусать рулевое перо и киль яхт. Атаки продолжались от 20 минут и более 60 минут. В одном из случаев косатки оторвали кусок пера и оставили экипаж без управления. Капитан позвонил спасателям со словами: «На нас напали косатки!». ⠀ Почему они начали атаковать яхты? Ученые предположили, что такое поведение связано со стрессом. Есть мнение, что косатки разозлились на нас и у них есть на это много причин. Популяция в Гибралтарском проливе находится под угрозой исчезновения - их осталось менее 50 особей. Тунец, за которым они приплывают – также становится все более редким. Косатки буквально вынуждены соперничать с людьми за еду. Ходили слухи, что рыбаки нападали на косаток. Тунец в наше время – «золотая» рыба...поэтому не удивлюсь если это окажется правдой. ⠀ В Гибралтарском проливе большой судоходный трафик, а вместе с этим много шума и загрязнений. Во время пандемии были введены различные ограничения и трафик уменьшился. Сейчас все возобновляется – возможно и это злит косаток. Они успели привыкнуть к «лучшей» жизни, когда наш мир уменьшил натиск на их владения. ⠀ Конечно, это всего лишь теория. Реальную причину знают только сами косатки. Учитывая, что это очень умные и социальные животные – стресс и злость вполне могут объяснить нападения. В стаях косаток были замечены малыши. Возможно, взрослые особи хотели таким образом защитить своих детей. Именно малыши чаще всего погибают от травм при столкновениях с судами и запутывания в сетях. ⠀ Нападения на яхты – это лишь верхушка айсберга. Короли океанов чем-то недовольны и уже открыто это показывают. Ученые считают важным решать причины такого поведения, а не последствия. Очень надеюсь, что так и будет. А вы что думаете? I just received two autographed copies of Spying on Whales by Nick Pyenson, who is curator of fossil marine mammals at the Smithsonian. It is a terrific book with lots of insights and personal accounts of discoveries about whales. My favorite part of the book is Chapter 11, Physical and Flensing Knives, which is about how Nick and cohorts discovered a new sensory organ in baleen whales. Yes, I am a cetacean- and biology-geek, but c’mon, finding a new organ and figuring out what it’s for is major cool. Oh…the cover image is one of mine, from a memorable encounter with a super friendly male humpback calf and his totally chilled-out mother. Nick has good taste in images :) Seriously though, reading is vital to learning. Show Nick some love and improve your mind at the same time. Meet Sandy! She is currently a stray on the islands of Turks of Caicos. She is the sweetest little pup, loves mahi mahi and enjoys taking a dip in the ocean to cool herself off. Would estimate her to be about 5 months old. We have been trying to find her a family since arriving at the island. Hello again. So I refuse to play into the “look how great my life is” facade of social media so here’s to transparency. A lot of things have changed these past couple months. And not even because of corona. Life went from pretty great to pretty shitty in almost an instant. I lost a very important person in my life which affected my mental health and the way I was navigating relationships, and it didn’t help that this happening around the time of my birthday. I realized how consuming social media (especially IG) can be so I took a much needed break until I was ready to change the way navigate my life (and relationships), especially online. Since then life has turned around significantly. I was able to grieve and cope with my loss, settled into my new job that I love, got accepted into my masters program, and moved into my new apartment. Self-isolation has made it a bit of struggle trying to stay afloat, but things are looking pretty good and I’m grateful to be where I am now. I don’t say any of this because I want anyone’s pity, but mostly to say we’re real fucking people and shit happens so we shouldn’t feel like we should conceal these parts of our lives. And be wary of the relationships you only maintain online because many tend to be superficial; focus your energy on the folks who look out for you IRL. Can you believe that this is in the UK?! I took a day trip to Paradise 🌴 My friend Kate and I took a ferry 2hr 45minutes off the coast of Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly last week. We spent the day on St Martins, my absolute favourite island for white sandy beaches. We ate Cornish Pasties, swam in the cold British ocean and marvelled at how incredibly beautiful it is! What I particularly love is that it’s never busy! Being an archipelago, the 5 inhabited islands can only sustain a certain number of guests and it gets booked up a year in advance. Not only am I a fan (and have been for 30 years) but so are celebs too - Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judy Dench and The Royal Family (Kate and Will were here this summer) to name a few. Então nossa equipe preparou algumas dicas para ajudar seus pets nestes dias: 1) Providencie local protegido do sol e bem ventilado (podem usar ventilador ou ar condicionado!) 2) Espalhe vários potes com água fresca (e se possivel, gelada! Vale jogar cubinhos de gelo na agua) pela casa. Misturar caldinho de carne ou alimento umido na agua pode estimular alguns pets a beberem mais (o famoso “sopão”) 3) Faça um picolé para seu pet: basta bater frutas, ração ou alimentos que seu pet costuma comer com água e congelar! 4) Banhos de mangueira são liberados para os pets que tem acesso a quintal, desde que a pele esteja bem sequinha no final do dia. Para os pets de apartamento, vale spray com agua sobre o corpo, se o animalzinho gostar! 5) Evite passeios nos horários mais quentes do dia! Prefira o início da manhã ou da noite. Especialmente para os braquicefálicos (pugs, buldogues, shihtzu) que correm grande risco de sofrer intermação. Fique atento para o cão não queimar as patinhas no asfalto quente!
