Today felt pretty icy in Adelaide, wind, rain and hail, but the perfect weather to be inside cutting gemstones in my opinion 😊 this #transformationtuesday is the sweetest little icy blue Madagascan Sapphire measuring 7.8 x 3.8mm and weighs 0.51ct. This slender Sapphire shield was cut from a small and thin piece of rough, but finished up clean as a whistle, and would make the perfect plus 1 in a moi et toi ring or maybe an art deco style drop pendant 🤔 #tatumgems - @tatumgems on Instagram

Here’s an Australian Parti Sapphire with green and gold fever 💚💛 this thin slice of rough was too thin to facet so I decided to polish it as a tablet cut to show of the gorgeous banding of green on yellow, and of course while also following the natural shape of the rough 😄 (I didnt take a before photo though, so you’ll have to use your imagination of what the rough looked like 😉). This stone is unheated and mined in Rubyvale, QLD weighing 1.86ct and measures 11.1 x 7.3mm. Story time! In 2012 I went to see Langhorne Slim at the Casbah in San Diego. As our group loitered on the patio I spotted Malakai and Jeff, two members of the band and walked over to say hello. Malakai was sheepish and quiet, but Jeff was animated and easy going. We chatted for a while and by the time they had to get ready I had agreed to make him a piece of jewelry, he chose to make a ring for his girlfriend. Now this was at a time when my experience as a silversmith was still pretty green. I was smithing under the stairs of the hot rod shop my husband worked at, I was experimenting a lot with materials trying to develop my artistic style. The turquoise ring I made became her wedding ring and it came back to me recently just beat up and well loved and crying for a little tlc. I didn’t want to sand away the years of abuse from being worn daily, hand washed, guitar plucked and Van life-ing around the USA as Helyn blossomed as a singer/songwriter in her own regard. Corona was the first time a break came and the ring was off. I desoldered the broken shank and minimally restored it giving it a good tumble in Rosy’s hone and highlight media to soften some of the deeper gouges and reset the turquoise I used when I knew no better about quality. I decided it was time for something brand new, after all so much has changed since 2012! My skills are so much better, and she’s become a solo artist making ethereal and beautiful music videos and creating intimately personal songs that feel so relevant in my own life somehow. Helyn is the reason we are Eternal Fire Logan. One of her songs played in our backyard resulted in naming the group of friends that gathered into a cult (ha) as a bonfire glowed...and as she sang and Jeff played our house almost caught fire. I’ll never forget that night, and the other adventures we have shared. I hope someday we again get to explore some small part of earth together.
