Things to consider: Blending in beats sticking out, maintain a low profile. Maintain situational awareness at all times. When possible, avoid crowds. Have a get home plan including alternate routes. Use known areas of protests & riots to aid your planning. If possible, shelter in place until things die down. Monitor local and social media for updates, live feeds and real time information. Notify friends, coworkers and family of your situation. Consider a Get Home Bag. If in the middle of a protest or riot: Don’t stick around. One minute you’re watching and the next you’re in it. If you can’t avoid it, avoid instigators and agitators, they’re not hard to miss. Be aware of large groups of people showing up wearing the same clothing, masks, hats and backpacks (uniformity). They’re there for a reason. If a protest or mob is moving in one direction, consider breaking off. If they’re going east, go north or south a few blocks over. Iranian artists @icyandsot recently took off on another self-initiated mission, inspired by climate activist Greta Thunbergs work and the worldwide environmental movement she has started. Using the vast Californian desert landscape as a dramatic backdrop for their work and activists impactful speech as an alarming wake-up call, Saman and Sasan Oskouei created a riveting video titled Our House is on Fire. ⠀ ⠀ I want you to panic. I want you to act as if your house was on fire. @gretathunberg ⠀ ⠀ In some way turning Gretas inspiring words into poetic reality, Icy and Sot built a frame of an archetypal home and set it on fire. Allowing for the untouched surrounding nature to be seen between the blazing framework of the house, the artists suggest looking at the wider picture in which the Earth is our only home. The video shows the reversed footage of their installation being swallowed by flames and crumbling to the ground, creating an illusion of burning pieces of wood rising up and forming the familiar structure. More often than not folks that don’t directly know me assume that I have some high-speedo Ninja type SOF background based on what I have done since retiring from the Marine Corps. While I find this humbling, I’d like to clarify that I have never been in Delta Force nor a book writing/movie producing SEAL unit(not gay). I’m not some high-speedo Marine sniper or pipe-hitter with MARSOC. I was never in the Air Force and am not a PJ/CCT sky-god. Never did any time as a member of the Marine Corps reconnaissance community (BN or Force). I have been fortunate to have been exposed to great people over the years both in the military and out. People that I have learned a tremendous amount from. This original hand lithograph Australian poster was made and used to promote the film Canadian documentary film ‘Blitzkrieg’ in 1962, the year it was released in Australia. It was discovered in a Victorian Farm shed. As the poster attests it makes extensive use of archival film but interestingly from 200 ‘German and Russian’ cameramen. Both perspectives are important because so much of the story of World War Two is dominated by the Western Allied view. However, the film is introduced by British General Sir Brian Horrocks who served in major European campaigns as well as the Russian Civil War. This striking poster uses a two-tone palette very effectively to capture the menacing German soldier and tanks on the open fields of Europe for The Blitzkrieg is so infamous. Blitzkrieg is a term used to describe a method of offensive warfare designed to strike a swift, focused blow at an enemy using mobile, maneuverable forces, including armored tanks and air support. Germany mastered this strategy early in World a War Two and the allied armies had little answer to it at this time. As a result the approach lead to sweeping victories by German forces with few losses on their part. Such an attack ideally leads to a quick victory, limiting the loss of soldiers and artillery. . With everything going on in the last year with work slowly going away and coming back. The fewer times I get to see my family and just the uncertainty surrounding the day to day life I’ve had a lot of anxiety and depression overwhelm my life and my mind. Some days I don’t even feel like trying or even making an effort. The more I talk to friends and peers it appears I’m not alone and that we all are dealing with different mental health problems as a result of how drastic our lives have changed since February.
