Happy #blackbreastfeedingweek!! The racial disparities in breastfeeding for Black women, stand out- amongst other issues. When I had my first in the hospital, I felt out of control or no control. With my next three pregnancies, I made it my job to get as much information as I could about #homebirth and #breastfeeding and had an amazing birthing team #danceoflifemidwifery.. Not every Black mother gets that choice and access. We must support all mothers in all stages of pregnancy and postpartum and especially mothers of color. At the age of three months, Black infant babies have a larger lower rate of breastfeeding at 58 percent compared to White babies at the same age by 72 percent. By 6 months, it goes even lower to 44 percent, and White babies are at 62 percent. It all comes back to resources, support and economics! Vince and Thomas - the mentor and mentee, the elder and apprentice - weed rows of onions with Vinces homemade, three-head fire-weeding rig. I see this transfer of knowledge between generations as being vital to our culture and something that, unfortunately, we need to revive. The past and future meeting, to share time and skills in the present. • This photograph is part of my ongoing, very personal project of documenting my community. Its becoming a series of photographs that feel so close to my heart and intimate that I have trouble sharing them in such an impersonal way. One day it will be a book to take your time with, to sit with the images as I have sat with them. • But for now, a small collection of them are on display as part of an outdoor exhibit in Nelsons Lakeside Park which runs until Oct.15. Its a collaborative show between @thomasnowa @jakeshermanphoto and I that explores how the pandemic has influenced the communities we live in. Clubs are the noblest soul of the fans. Behind the big money, millions of hearts beat. It is not trivial to remember that football is not made by stars but by ordinary people and their faith. It is a world where there are no social, age and political differences, but you live by following only one passion: the team. In the name of this passion, fans make immense sacrifices to stay close to their team, such as gruelling trips to watch the match. For this project, I travelled thousands of kilometres by bus. I crossed Italy from Piemonte to Puglia to visit and learn about the various realities of the Inter Clubs scattered throughout the area. I rediscovered the essence of football and the true meaning of being a fan. It’s been 6 days since Nanny went to be with Jesus. Thank you to every one who prayed with me and believed God for her healing. Good news is that she is healed. Although it looks differently than what I was hoping for, she is healed and more alive than ever. I never have a hard time finding words because Im a lover of words... but Nannys passing left me speechless. I’ve wanted to honor her life publicly but every time I went to write, I’d shut down because how do you describe someone that is so special and so close to your heart— We just weren’t expecting this.. we just knew Nanny was coming out stronger. She was SUCH a woman of quiet strength. The kindest, most gentle, go with the flow, selfless woman I’ve ever known. She ALWAYS put everyone before herself, even at the risk of her own self. She was the epitome of grace.. she lived the simple life at its best, with a heart of gratitude. She saved plastic straws, sour cream containers, and reused them for years. She made everything she had from scratch.. and her favorite place to shop was the local Goodwill. Every room in her house contains a few quilts thrown over a recliner, bed, or sofa...she would tell the same stories/jokes over and over again and laugh as if it were her first time hearing. She loved her family... she loved Jesus.. she loved listening to the Gaithers. She made the best turkey and dressing... and sweet tea. She always found the good in everyone and any situation. I never heard her say anything negative about anyone... always honoring and loving and kind. I got the news nanny was declining, but was still hopeful. I canceled a conference and rushed down to Arkansas. I walked in and saw her lying there... it took my breath away. I sat by her side from morning to night, soaking up every moment. Nanny’s whole life came down to this moment. I knew time on earth with her was coming to an end. Nanny went to Heaven.. and a part of me died and went with her. Heaven is real. Papaw passed a little under a year ago, and I know he welcomed her into the Heavens. She missed him so much. Today, we celebrate her life. I am who I am because of you, Nanny. Reflections on a lake As I walk under this starry sky, wandering in the unknowns, With no clue whats happening in my life, I walk towards a lake, sit there and cry. As I wipe my tears a little, I see these reflections come into sight. Its 1879,I see a child giving food to his servants son without the knowledge of his family because they wouldnt approve their friendship. But for them friendship had no status. 1914, World War 1, a husband is promising his wife that he will come back soon. Theres hope in her eyes and theres fear. Fear that he might not return the same. 1931, theres a woman, sobbing. Why wasnt I enough ? She screams, Why did he cheat on me? she continues. 1945, a mother, mourning over her son whom she lost in an accident. Wondering how she is going to live the rest of her life without him. 1972, a boy, waiting for his boyfriend to reach the lake. They are going to elope, to a far away land as their love is beyond peoples understanding in the town. 1996, a father, dreaming about how he is going to earn money and his family would never have to face any inconvenience again. 2001, an old Muslim man is being beaten because of 9/11 attack. He is begging for them to have mercy and leave him, they dont know he suffered a loss in that attack too, not that they care. 2003, a little girl grasps several breaths as she cries, while her parents burry her bunny. The light of her life is no more. 2015, a couple is on their first date. They have butterflies in their stomachs, thinking how every heartbreak they had, was leading them to end up with each other. 2020, I see my own reflection, with tears in my eyes shouting that Im a failure. Trying to find the will to live and try again. When all these stories tell me that there is so much more to life than success and failure. This lake has seen it all. It shrieks all the emotions; misery, joy, dreams, failures, hopes, fears, innocence and wickedness. today i’ve been partnered with this guy for 6 whole years! here we are as babies in 2013 falling in love, not knowing we were rowing into a future together... it sounds cheesy but this human makes me so full i often just can’t believe how fortunate i feel to have found him on this planet in this lifetime. we’ve always said our art comes first and our love comes next, and that foundation has made for the most beautifully supportive, emboldened relationship. it also makes being away from him on tour right now okay. anniversaries feel silly but they also feel grounding and liberating. time is moving and we’re moving with one another through it. last year i ‘proposed’ to sam just after our 5 years together and for anyone wondering, we’re doing ‘the deed’ on our 10 year, with some kind of celebration somewhere in between. at least that’s what we’re telling people so that we don’t have to answer the “when’s the date” question. we wanna do this thing our way, so we will, with time, art, and adventure abound. can’t wait to keep rowing forward witchu, lover, and with all of y’all who have loved our love too. thank you. sappy appreciation post over. 〰️ - @graciecoates on Instagram

I started documenting weddings almost 8 years ago, and I can say with total honesty that in all these years, I’ve never taken this work for granted, nor have I grown tired of it. The energy and connection of each wedding day is astonishingly unique. All the elements (weather, light, time, space, emotions, etc) are out of my control and changing constantly, which is, for me as a photographer, exhilarating. The beauty, for me, is in the noticing. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for every celebration I take part in. My first wedding of the year was set for early March, which turned out to be the first weekend of the shelter. Our collective safety matters most right now, but I miss my work so much! I’m incredibly thankful for all my 2020 clients, who, in the midst of the stressful postponing and rescheduling of their weddings, have blown me away with their care and support.
