A song about somebody trapped in a crumbled cave pushing below their root to reach the outside. Landscape is the first noteworthy American pictorial genre, but it is a tacit agreement that the gender reached its zenith with the Hudson River School. My encounter with the work of this group of landscape painters confirmed its symbolic and aesthetic link with European Romanticism, while raising a nearly pantheistic character of painting, a sublimation of nature connected with everything and the concept of God. Artists such as Frederic Church incorporate the concept of “the sublime” to the landscape painting on this side of the world. This concept had already been addressed by Kant in his book Critique of Judgment (Kritik der Urteilskraft) to approach art and had exponents in Europe, such as Turner. The meaning of “the sublime” as sacred —which opens the possibility of approaching nature in its divine and monumental character— is close enough to the painting process which results from my meditation practice. BATALLA DE LOS CAMPOS CATALÁUNICOS La batalla, ocurrida en 451, no fue más que una de las consecuencias de la inestabilidad que sufría la provincia de la Galia en en todo el siglo V. Entre las invasiones germanas que asomaban todo el imperio, las bagaudas (esclavos huidos, campesinos empobrecidos, desertores…) que controlaban y saqueaban zonas del norte de Hispania y buena parte de la Galia, las continuas guerras civiles entre romanos que sacaban sus efectivos de provincias como ésta, esquilmándolas, la Galia era un territorio profundamente inestable. Aecio, general romano de origen godo, logró el poder el Galia, ejerciendo de magister militum de dicha provincia, y siendo protegido continuamente con su famosa guardia huna. Sin embargo, el pueblo huno, bajo el mando de Atila, que prohibió a su pueblo servir de mercenario para Roma, atacó la inestable provincia gala con la supuesta razón de atacar a los visigodos asentados en la Galia, también enemigos de los romanos. Sin embargo, Aecio reconoció el peligro antes de que Atila lo sorprendiera y firmó un foedus con los visigodos, que lucharían para él a cambio del territorio que ocupaban. Así, los romanos y los godos orientales sumaban unos 20.000 o poco más. Por su parte, los hunos y la alianza de gépidos, burgundios, ostrogodos, vándalos y demás pueblos sumaban unos 25.000 hombres. Cerca de Orleans, el ejército romano-germano alcanzó al de Atila, quien no se esperaba la alianza de sus enemigos y ya no estaba tan seguro de poder ganar la batalla en esas condiciones. Aecio situó a los romanos en el ala izquierda, a los alanos que se le unieron poco antes de la batalla en el centro y a los visigodos en el ala derecha. Atila formó a sus hunos frente a los alanos, los ostrogodos frente a los visigodos y los demás pueblos frente a los romanos. Atila intentó hacer huir a los alanos, que dejarían dividido el ejército de Aecio, pero los hunos no lograron su propósito, y pese a la muerte del rey visigodo Teodorico, tampoco los visigodos cedieron. Roerich’s “St. Panteleimon the Healer” is one of two versions of the same painting. The one pictured here, which is in our museum, is the version he completed in 1931. The second (swipe right to see it) was painted in 1916 and is now in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Comparing the two versions, you can see how much Roerich’s style evolved in fifteen years. The 1931 version uses more vivid colors and the whole canvas appears more bold and vibrant. The differences also reflect the surroundings Roerich was exposed to at each time. When he painted the 1916 version, he was influenced by the Karelian landscape he was familiar with. In the later version, one can see that he was influenced by his travels through the Altai region in 1926. Hace 34 años salió este disco y su portada para mí es muy especial. Mi primer contacto real con un arte de disco fue ver el póster de este album colgado en la pared de un cuarto en mi casa cuando era niña. Un póster enorme típico de los 90s muy bien impreso y en el que se podían apreciar todos los detalles. En ese momento no tenia la capacidad de entender mucho mas allá de lo visual en si en cuanto a significados y aún así recuerdo que me volaba la cabeza y me quedaba un rato mirándolo. Curiosamente escuchar el disco en si vino después y relacionar que era esa su portada, aunque se podría decir que Maiden me acompaño toda la vida porque no recuerdo un momento de no saber quiénes eran. Enseguida pensé que yo que ya dibujaba desde siempre quería hacer eso, porque no solamente ya me encantaba la música en general, sino que ese proceso fue entender que esa imagen era una representación de la música, de las letras, de un concepto. Creo que hasta incluso definió mi estilo, en el sentido de los detalles, las múltiples lecturas y no dejar nada al azar. Y no puedo evitar conectar cada vez que la veo y pensar en que hoy es una realidad aquello que en ese momento, parada fascinada adelante de ese póster a los 7/8 años, era un sueño completamente lejano. Porque aún en ese entonces entendí que el arte visual en la música tiene muchísima importancia, que yo quería y podía representar esas imágenes y que si me esforzaba y aprendía mucho algún día iban a estar colgadas en la pared de un cuarto cualquiera. - @villyvillian on Instagram

Introducing Stephen Rew @stephenrewfineart Stephen Rew is an award-winning wildlife artist based in South Wales. Whilst studying for an arts degree at Swansea University he spent time studying animals in the wild in India, the Middle East and Africas KwaZulu-Natal and it was there, in Africa, that long-term objectives to combine artistic practices with a love and respect for wildlife began to emerge. Stephen is creative yet practical, and his success with his artworks lies in his ability to be broadminded with his tools, palette and concepts. Stephen brings the wild to life with his bronze sculptures and coffee and ink paintings of the animal world. Stephen was awarded the coveted title of Wildlife Artist of the Year 2019 by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation for his wall-mounted Octopus Writhe. As well as his world- renowned sculptures and paintings Stephen has studied the technique and history of forging Damascus steel under the tuition of a master blacksmith in London. Following a trip to India in 2012 Stephen began to expand his knowledge and experience of the materials, processes and possibilities working alongside craftsmen in Rajasthan, India. He works largely on commission and exhibits in the UK, Middle East, USA and Channel Islands. Stephen dedicates a large portion of his time to working in close proximity to wildlife, where his inspiration is largely derived. He works closely with conservation charities to put his skills to use in a bid to make change and help animals in the natural world. Whilst Wildlife Artist of the Year, Stephen raised over £10,000 for @dswfwildlife, and continues to raise money for wildlife conservation around the world. Stephen’s beautiful oil on canvas “Focus” together with coffee and ink paintings will be available to purchase when the exhibition opens at 12.00BST on 6th October. Painted Dog Fact: An acute sense of hearing with their ‘#MickeyMouseears allows the #painteddog to hear approaching danger, and to pick up long-distance contact calls from pack members. Announcing: ‘Painting is Painting’s Favourite Food: Art History as Muse’ at South Etna Montauk (@south_etna_montauk), New York. Opening today, July 16. • ‘Asger Jorn, the great Danish artist and mastermind of the CoBrA movement, always had a zinger up his sleeve. He famously sent a mordant telegram to Harry F. Guggenheim, refusing the Guggenheim Prize with a single sentence: “Go to hell with your money, Bastard!” Jorn titled one of his most famous modifications—his term for painting on top of anonymous thrift store canvases—The Avant Garde Won’t Give Up. And in speaking about the voracious cultural consumption required of the creative act, he declared, “Painting is painting’s favorite food,” encapsulating the vital role that art history plays in most artists’ practice. Jorn’s quip serves as both inspiration and exposition for Painting is Painting’s Favorite Food: Art History as Muse, the debut presentation at South Etna Montauk, opening July 16, 2020 in the Village of Montauk on the East End of Long Island. Curated by Alison M. Gingeras, this exhibition riffs on Jorn’s cheeky turn of phrase to explore the various ways artists deploy art history as their central muse.’ - Image: ‘God Speed to a Great Astronaut’ (2007). Titans of Creation, 2020. I was asked if I had an interesting idea for the new TESTAMENT album cover before there were any lyrics or a title. Humanity was always obsessed with recurring forms in nature, like how some patterns on a leaf looked like a lightning bolt or the human nerve system, or the connection between celestial movements and events on earth. Myths and folklore were created in order to explain even the simplest of natural occurrences, like the weather, seasons or night making way to the day. So, I came up with our own new mythology to symbolize how the Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms in our bodies originated in previous generations of long gone dead stars, and how these elements combine to form the nucleotides in our DNA. So, for the cover I came up with a place where ancient deities are forming both men and planets. They pour the atoms and pound them with their hammers, creating a spiral staircase of the human DNA, from which the planetary rings of a new-born planet are also born. The fire in the deities’ chest are the dying stars, as us humans are all made of their ashes. The album was later on named after the cover. This shows how much this album was a collaborative effort with everyone contributing—I even helped naming the album. Many of Judith Lowry’s subjects are deeply personal, relating family triumphs and tragedies. She also seeks to record and recover the oral and musical traditions with which she was raised. These traditions came from her father’s mixed Maidu and Washoe heritage, which he learned from his grandmother, who, in turn, had learned from her own grandmother. In “Welgatims Song”, Lowry portrays the Native California story of inundation. The protagonist is Welgatim, wife of the mythical coyote Weh-pom. Weh-pom has fallen in love with the beautiful deer Suh-Mim and so plots to murder his wife. Each morning, Welgatim reappears unharmed and makes breakfast for her husband. She warns him of terrible consequences, but Weh-pom will not be dissuaded from his plots. The next morning he awakens to an empty home and when he sets out to hunt finds all the light and heat extinguished. Using song and prayer, Welgatim has summoned all the clouds and rain to the earth as punishment. The story continues with the tale of The Race for Fire and the hazardous trek to distant Mount Tehama — foreshadowed by its depiction in the background here — to retrieve fire in order to save all of Earth’s inhabitants. The artist unites both the deluge narrative and the volcanic destruction of Mount Tehama in order to speak directly to our contemporary environmental crisis.
