An English country chair dated 1839 with a cushion made from old toile bed drapings. In fact, not only is the cushion fabric from reclaimed materials but, interestingly, the chair is also. The use of reclaimed wood in furniture making is certainly on trend, but it is not a new practice. Historically, it has been not uncommon to use architectural salvage to make commemorative items. This chair is one example. A plaque affixed to the chair reads (as best as I can decipher): This Chair was made in 1839. From Timber taken from the Roof of ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH, PLYMOUTH. After a Period of several Centuries from the Erection of that Edifice. REVD JOHN HATCHARD M.A. VICAR. FREDERIC BONE. ALFRED HINGSTON. } Churchwardens Historical accounts document that these wardens began a series of improvements to this 15th century church, including installing a new church bell in 1839 — the same year this chair was made from reclaimed roof timbers presumably from a roof repair. Various renovations proceeded through the 1870s. Selle Generator Works Akron OH The Selle Gear Company was incorporated September 25, 1886. Their specialty was the manufacture of the Selle Platform Truss Gears, for omnibuses, three spring wagons and trucks, as well as suspensions and parts for horse-drawn carriages. Akron Selle Co. produced parts for cars, trucks and planes -- and even gasoline gauges for dirigibles. Akron Selle continued to make sheet metal stampings for the auto industry until they closed their doors for good in March 2001. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 9, 2005. The historic property is now known as The Selle Generator Works. This vintage desk and chair has called the garage home for a number of years. Both pieces became moldy, and the finish continue to deteriorate. Steph said to trash it because it was so damage, but it holds special memories for me. The purchase of this furniture kickstarted my interest in vintage furniture and “shopping” at estate sales. The builders challenge was just what I needed to pull this out of the garage and tackle the refinishing. I must say, I was challenged every step of the way, but I persevered and got it done! My neighbor • So, a few weeks ago I met someone. I was moving my pieces into @adoreboutiquecollective at @theforumcarlsbad and she came in for her appointment. She was going to sign her contract and she brought in some if her product. • @sweetspottoffee gave us a taste and as I swallowed the deliciousness, I looked over at the store owner and said “F#@& that’s good!” • Oopsie. That was not my intention, but the truth is the truth.
