A common fear I hear from clients is that they don’t want to look to strong (bulky, muscular) They want to look “lean” just enough muscle but not too much. I get it. Women are told we are supposed to be soft, feminine, small. This is what men like. But it’s the other side of the same coin of all the other beauty standards we have placed on us.*********************************************************I push back strongly on this idea that women aren’t supposed to be strong physically or have muscles. Little boys are told to put the chairs away while the girls talk. Little girls are told to do their pushups on their knees or not do pull-ups because they can’t. High school girls take aerobics while the boys take strength training. Dad’s bring their sons to the weight room while their daughters go to the treadmill (generally) ********************************************************Resistance training has so many benefits especially for women. Lets stop focusing on the aesthetic outcome. (And by this I mean whatever body you have by strengthening it. Whether it’s small muscles, no visible muscles, large muscles or anything in between.) i must remember - when i gained weight it was considered socially acceptable. it was encouraged by my family and treatment team. they told me i needed to, and it was true, i did. when i gained weight they told me i looked “healthier”. i am both physically and mentally healthier, true, but “healthy” does not have a look. 🌿 i can post a picture of my weight restored body with the hashtag #gainingweightiscool and people will nod in agreement. i can post without fear of getting into an argument with someone about the size of my body, without being bullied, alienated or stigmatized. my weight restored body is one that is deemed acceptable by society. this is thin privilege. so many people in recovery are not given this same affirmation and support 🌿 many people in larger bodies are the throes of restrictive eating disorders. many people in larger/fat bodies need to gain weight - to be physically healthy, to be mentally healthy, to be their full selves. to repeat this again, there are fat people who will not recover, who will not live their fullest lives, without gaining weight and yet it is much less likely for them to receive encouragement from the world around them. 🌿 if there is a different reaction to those in larger bodies posting about their recovery journeys, please ask why, please challenge that response. many of us were taught in school to associate EDs with thinness, it makes sense that we have that association, but it’s not okay to let that association go unchallenged. to fight against EDs we must fight against weight stigma and anti-fatness, barriers to recovery for so many. 🌿 celebrate recovery at any size. celebrate weight restoration at any size. it is absolutely imperative to provide adequate, affirming, effective treatment at any size. repeat it again: restrictive eating disorders are not defined by body size. validate recovery at any size. encourage, support, celebrate recovery at any size. - @loveslifealatte on Instagram

👋Hey there I’m Bryce, I share about motherhood and everyday mental health. Let’s talk multi-tasking. We’re all doing it as parents, because quite frankly we have to. We’re raising young children, working, taking care of our homes, navigating relationships and adjusting to a massive shift in how we live our daily lives. The problem is, our brains weren’t meant to work this way. And as a result when we are deep in multi-tasking and trying to parent at the same time it might have the tendency to increase our anxiety, agitation and stress and as a result make us more likely to lose our temper with our kids. Things you can do: ✨Simply notice that you’re multi-tasking. And take note of whether it is increasing your stress or agitation. ✨ Be present with how you are feeling in this moment. If multi-tasking is going ok, great! If you notice you’re starting to get agitated, irritable or you feel that anger rising when your kids “interrupt” your multi-tasking, consider stepping back and 👇 ✨ Practicing “single-tasking”. Single tasking is exactly what it sounds like, doing one thing at a time. It might look like playing with your kids and leaving the phone in the other room. Or having a time (or times) dedicated to respond to calls or emails so you’re not checking 100 times a day. Or even having family clean up time so you’re all working on a project together. ✨Define times during your day when you can schedule single-tasking. It just might help you feel more accomplished, Productive and most of all more connected to those around you. Does trying to do too much all at the same time stress you out? Are you a multi-tasker? Whew! This quote! 🙌🏾 I read it years ago and it has STUCK with me. Im constantly reminded of it when I see supplements, weight loss, and diets presented as a cure for PCOS or the magic bullet for PCOS symptoms. Quick fixes and cure-alls rarely deliver what they promise. And more often than not, they leave us worse off than before. I know this has been the case for many of the people Ive worked with. Maybe it has been for you too. This month, I’ll be sharing posts about supplements for PCOS. Many of which I regularly use with clients. And while I wholeheartedly believe supplements can play a very important role in managing PCOS, they are not a cure-all, more is not better, and they dont replace the lifelong practice of showing up for yourself with gentle care tailored to your unique body. Those working in the tourism industry — myself included — are often quick to commoditize and legitimize the “value” of travel. We talk about how many people tourism employs and how much income it generates. The number of international arrivals, flights, and itineraries. Room occupancy and impressions. Lost under all those numbers and statistics is a value that can’t be plugged into a spreadsheet: The value of places, people, and their stories. The value of history and culture. The value of awe, curiosity, wonder, and delight. The value of something simply existing. It seems to me that those working in tourism often forget about the fundamental foundation that creates and defines places and the people who live there — value that already exists. Instead of letting destinations flourish on their own, tourism often shapes those places and people, forcing them to remold themselves into what is most desirable for travelers and the tourism industry. For an industry that often touts the need to tread lightly, it has stamped a massive footprint onto the planet. In some cases, it has crushed that which was valuable before tourism took over. 💥Do we really want to live in a world where tourism determines value? Or do we want to live in one where tourism adds value?💥 Its time for the industry to let value lead instead of shaping what value looks like. I was scrolling through Facebook this morning + noticed a bunch of folks have added ‘temporary profile pictures’ of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. You know those ones that evidently self-destruct in 7 days or something? 💣 . Now I completely understand the need for these tributes. After all, Ruth was a pioneer of equality + a trailblazing feminist. In the ‘70s, she conceived/tried numerous cases that established constitutional protections against gender discrimination. She was famous for her passionate yet level-headed dissents + she tirelessly defended equal justice + civil rights. Ruth fought for the marginalised as a Jewish woman who grew up excluded - driven + motivated by her Judaism. . It’s no secret I’m an advocate for the issues for which Ruth stood - yet I can’t help but feel uneasy with all the temporary tributes. Surely honouring this remarkable women shouldn’t be a trend? Surely it shouldn’t be so brazenly temporary (and dare I say it, performative)? Surely celebrating her legacy ought to be an every day occurrence, via our actions + intent? . Now am I having a go at you if you popped up a temporary profile pic? No! I am glad you are honouring her! Yet I DO hope you can keep the tribute up long after the RBG meme fades back to your selfie🤳In fact, in the words of Ruth herself: “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” Hard agree! . The word “anxiety” is banded around a lot and unfortunately misused in a lot of cases. When stress gets too much, the anxious response kicks in because the brain gets confused - it thinks we are in danger and doesn’t understand why we have so much stress. A lot of times we think of the physical part of birth, not the mental part. Don’t get me wrong the physical part is real. But, the mental side is just as important. Have you heard of the fear-tension-pain cycle? Well, it’s totally normal to have some fears surrounding birth. We are in a society where it’s not unusual to have heard someone’s crazy birth story after all. Creating that fear around birth can cause tension which causes pain. Repeat. Preparing yourself for birth during your pregnancy through childbirth education and comfort techniques can help relieve some of that stress and fear. You will find many methods of birth preparation and I’m asked a lot which one I prefer. I can honestly tell you that I’ve found benefits to each one. My advice would be to read on several methods and take the things you like. If you’re searching for a doula or educator look for someone who aligns with your thinking. Anyone else relate? 🙋🏼♀️ Im feeling more like my pre-therapy self lately...feeling insecure about my quarantine body, not getting a lot of sleep, and finding it hard to be on Instagram because Im catching myself playing the comparison game. ✨ I know most of the reasons these things are coming up...missing my old routine, wanting to get out of the house, etc etc...but I think its worth remembering that this experience is unprecedented. ❤️ I keep having to remind myself that this is a different type of grief and its lasting a lot longer than anyone imagined. Not to mention, 2020 has just continued to get worse and worse. Have you been gluten free for a while now, but you still can’t seem to get rid of those digestive issues ❓ I was in that same boat so I know exactly how frustrating it is 🤦🏻♀️ The problem I had was that I wasn’t eating the right foods. I figured just because my cookies were gluten free or my bread was gluten free that I should feel great. But that’s not the case ❌ You have to pay more attention to 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 gluten free foods like veggies, fruits, grass fed meats, eggs, nuts, etc. & pay less attention to gluten free “junk”. Don’t get me wrong I still love my cookies & bread & I don’t stop myself from eating them. Instead, I just choose brands that are made with better ingredients 🙌🏻 Switch out those gluten free cookies with 25 ingredients on the list & go for minimal ingredient brands like @simplemills or @soozysgrainfree 👍🏼 Switch out that gluten free bread that has tons of ingredients you can’t even pronounce for one that has recognizable ingredients like @baseculture 👍🏼 When eating anything from a package don’t worry about the calories, fat, carbs or protein, instead worry about the ingredients! Do you know what ingredients are in the product? Can you pronounce these ingredients? Is there more than 8-10 ingredients? Why are we so stressed? . It comes down to 3 major things: . 1) Heart-rate variability. We have ~110,000 heart beats per day, every beat signalling our body to create 1 of 2 things: stress or resilience. . The fastest way to eliminate stress and increase resilience is to learn how to change the heart signal your sending your body, every second, every moment. . . 2) Faulty Breathing Patterns. We take ~20,000 breaths per day, with each breath signalling our body to create 1 of 2 things: fight/flight (stress) or rest/rejuvenate (resilience). . When we breath upwards, using our chest and upper neck muscles, we signal fight/flight (stress). You can meditate for a long while if you like, but you don’t have to. You can meditate with whatever time you have, even if it’s only five minutes. I like it in the morning even 5 minutes of the baby is crawling around or longer if I have to wait until her first nap. It sets a tone of calm for the entire day to TRY to have patience for all that comes. And it actually gives me more energy. Sometimes I forget just how hypervigilant we have to be as celiacs, especially when out to eat with friends and family at non-100% gluten free restaurants. We don’t have the luxury of completely relaxing and letting our guards down like they often do.⠀ ⠀ This is because not only do we have to plan for the experience ahead of time (calling ahead to ask questions, researching the restaurant, talking with our server), but we also have to look out for other potential hazards as well.⠀ ⠀ Hazards like a very young child sitting next to you and wanting to touch your face after handling bread. They don’t know any better, of course, but you have to keep a watchful eye on them to ensure they don’t accidentally gluten you. (This has happened to me before.)⠀ ⠀ Or when you’re celebrating something special and you go to cheers someone who’s drinking a (very full) beer. You are so cognizant of what’s going on that you instinctively know to make sure your glass is up higher than theirs so no beer can potentially splash into your beverage.⠀ ⠀ Or what about that basket of bread that comes to the table before the meal? It’s usually placed in the middle of the table and people will be reaching across for a piece. It’s silly, but just a few crumbs unknowingly landing in your glass of water is all it takes to get glutened.⠀ ⠀ It all seems silly, but this just goes to illustrate the level of awareness we have to maintain when living the celiac lifestyle. And it’s not just at restaurants. This stretches far beyond into many other aspects of our lives as well.⠀ ⠀ Do you feel you’re much more vigilant since your diagnosis? I touched on this a bit in my post yesterday, but I want to take it a little further today. One framework I like to use, and I’ll be sharing more about in The Work of Healing Anxiety, is this one shown here. Every time we are anxious - there are three points of entry to provide some soothing or restore calm. 1. The mind — we can use our thoughts to remind ourselves we are okay, and we’re safe. 2. The body — we can physically move energy through us (movement) or create a sense of safety by soothing ourselves physically. 3. The emotions — we can check in with our emotional selves and explore what other feelings might be present beneath the anxiety that need to be addressed as well. Sometimes when we’re trapped in a loop of being anxious all the time it can feel frustrating and defeating… but so often we’re not actually working with our anxiety from all angles. There’s more to it than just trying to change your thoughts. The Work of Healing Anxiety starts on October 5th. We’ll be deep diving into all of this. You’ll have online content and material exploring these concepts, along with a peer community and support from me along the way. Doors close on October 4th if you’d like to join.
