But there was one amazing, hopeful thing I learnt while reporting this story: countrary to popular beliefs, Lake Chad isn’t shrinking, in fact it’s come back to a 17,000 sq km superficie from just 2000 sq km in the 1990s. These three images of the same location in 2003, 2011 and 2020 show the Natural Regeneration we have encouraged. This land has gone from open sea (until 1800s), to saltmarsh (until 1940s), to sheep grazing (until 1977), to arable (until 2002), to grassland (until 2010) and now reeds and scrub. The strip of land to the right of Nook Drain (which itself would have been a slatmarsh creek) is now quite scrubby and compliments the large areas of the nature reserve that are grazed with sheep - they halt the natural succession that would turn grassland to woodland. The NYC DEP will begin field work this week to support the design of future upgrades at the dam and dikes that form Ashokan Reservoir. This work will include gathering soil and bedrock samples from deep within each of the structures.⠀ ⠀ The work requires temporary closures or detours on the Ashokan Promenade and Ashokan Rail Trail to protect the safety of our visitors and workers. Heres what you need to know:⠀ ⠀ ⚠️ Subsurface investigations will start this week on the eastern side of the Ashokan Promenade, near the Frying Pan. That section of the walkway will remain open, but visitors will be routed around the work areas.⠀ ⠀ ⚠️ Work will begin on Olivebridge Dam - the western end of the promenade - in approximately two weeks. That section of the walkway and its parking lot will be CLOSED for approximately seven weeks. That section of the walkway is too narrow to safely route visitors around the drill rigs.⠀ ⠀ ⚠️ In late September and October, DEP will gather samples at Woodstock Dike, near the easternmost trailhead for the Ashokan Rail Trail. This work will not require the trail to be closed, but it will happen quite close to the parking lot. Visitors must stay on the trail and pay attention to signs that will be posted for their safety.⠀ ⠀ ⚠️⠀ In early November, DEP will perform subsurface investigations at Glenford Dike. The Ashokan Rail Trail travels atop Glenford Dike for approximately one-half mile. That portion of the rail trail will be CLOSED for approximately 2-3 weeks to protect the safety of workers and visitors. De acordo com a Instrução Normativa n. 21 de 2009, o período de defeso no Complexo Lagunar se estenderá até o dia 15 de novembro, sendo que os petrechos destinados a captura do camarão rosa devem ser retirados dos pontos de pesca durante este período. BREAKING: Lake O discharges to the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee likely to begin soon.
