Hello echo chamber! In 2014 I went to the Young Nats Ball to write an article for Metro Magazine (RIP). National was polling in the high 50s, Labour had just changed leader for the second time in a few years, and the only fragrance stronger than Jami-Lee Ross cologne was smug superiority. Fast forward three years, borne out of a place of desperation, Labour begins a remarkable comeback and turnaround that, essentially, has seen a 180 degree flip in fortunes. This is not a post to congratulate Labour on what they have achieved (although, while were here, congrats, Labour), but rather this is a reminder to my Lab/Green voting friends that things can change very fast. Judith Collins is a formidable politician, who resonates with a large chunk of the centrist Kiwi voting block who decide every election. All the racist, classist, disgusting bullshit she says, she says because it works. Over the next three months, its our job to talk to the people in our lives who are swing voters, Nat-curious, and explain, cooly, non-aggressively why a progressive vote is the best decision. Memes and jokes, chastising the opposition may be fun (Trotie!), but theyre only funny to people already on your side. They dont build a coalition of voters. Having open and honest conversations with your nearest and dearest does. Meet them where they are, listen to them, learn why they feel the way they do, and then explain why youre passionate about reducing climate change, or race relations policy, or mental health support, or ending child poverty. We have an amazing opportunity to shape the future of the country towards a more progressive vision, but that only happens if Labour and Greens can govern alone.
