This is my dear friend Melissa, and she’s wearing this fall’s “full heart” t-shirt (only 20 left!). Melissa & her husband Nick live in our neighborhood, and have been a part of our neighborhood @weare_heartland small group since we moved here. When I first met Melissa, we were both pregnant with our boys, and Melissa had just decided to leave her corporate job (with lots of money & lots of responsibility) because she felt God was calling her to stay home with her kids — a wild, drastic change from her currant life. A few weeks later, she & Nick received the news of Augie’s Down Syndrome diagnosis, and welcomed it with open arms & loving hearts. But that wasn’t all, Augie also had a heart defect, and a syndrome involving his GI system & both made his health extremely critical. He had a 50% survival rate, and we watched in those months before and after Augie’s birth as they walked through uncertainty after uncertainty, hospitalizations, home nursing, surgeries... I felt so guilty that my son, Phoenix, was just fine, while Melissa’s son was fighting to stay alive with every breath. Oh, the things we don’t know until hindsight, right? Often times, we want God to tell us our future. I know I do. But now, I know that He doesn’t because the truth is, we couldn’t handle it. We couldn’t handle the bigness of it. I would say, instead, that you can’t handle what God gives you until you have to. Until you have no choice, because it’s all you have. I’ll tell you this though — Augie is thriving, Melissa became president of the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network, began Wonderfully Made — the special needs ministry at our church, & she is also my Business Manager (you know, in her down time). Who knew 5 years ago that Melissa would begin a ministry that my daughter would be a part of? God did. I’m so glad I didn’t. But this is the life, right? Broken, Beautiful, and too big to comprehend the story He is writing. Melissa is the epitome of “full heart”. My favorite golden boy ✨ I want to share something with all of you. I post mostly happy + cute things on here and even though I feel like I share things about myself, my work and my family, I haven’t shared one of the biggest things happening in my life. Last fall shortly after our little dude Brady’s 2nd birthday, we received news that completely changed our lives (spoiler alert: in all the best ways!) Brady was diagnosed with autism. I still can’t believe I am typing that, it’s something I’ve struggled with opening up on here about. To be honest, the diagnosis came as a big surprise and even with a little bit denial from us and those who knew Brady best. Maybe someday I will go more into that time and all those emotions that come with a diagnosis. But what I will say now, is WOW, these past 10 months have been HARD! They have been filled with a whole lot of questions, tears, doctor appointments, assessments, prayers, diets, vitamins, and therapies but they have also been filed with lots of laughing, joy, breakthroughs, people who give us so much hope, doctors and therapist who love B like their own, and most of all so much love for WHO Brady is, not what diagnosis he has. I want to share our journey in a way that is honest and helpful to others as well as respectful to B. September 15th. Four years ago today was my first day as a full-time freelance artist and business owner. It was my last day working as a UI/UX designer for a tech company. I had amazing coworkers, hours, and benefits, and I loved the job itself, so I felt very torn when I left to devote all my time to painting. I didn’t know if it was the right move, but I felt like I had to try, and the thought of it being my job was in my grasp with a new restaurant commission. Four years. I celebrated today by paying my quarterly estimated taxes. 😂 But seriously, I wouldn’t trade the last four years for anything. Making art for a living has been an experience that I will never, ever take for granted. Thank you - truly, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who has supported my work. Today’s Friday Feature is on the other K of K2: Kelsey. This is her story in her own words... Growing up in a dance studio, I always had to have creativity outlet, which included receiving a Bachelor degree in Dance during college. I quickly realized the short lifespan of a dance career months after graduation & decided to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandise (FIDM) in San Francisco to figure out what direction my path could go outside of dance. I received a degree in Visual Communications, which covered everything from wardrobe styling and window displays to event planning and marketing. During my 6 years of living in San Francisco, I danced for the NBAs Golden State Warriors dance team for 3 seasons & simultaneously started my own jewelry line that ended up on various celebrities & a few TV shows like the Bachelor. I decided to follow my dreams & move to LA to grow my jewelry business & expand my dance career, so I got a dance agent & started working as a professional dancer while interning for a few well-known celebrity wardrobe stylists. As I put in my time in both industries, I grew tired. My body hurt, my fingers hurt from jewelry making, & my dreams started to evolve into something outside of these worlds. After a 3-week long Thailand vacation, I came home & started over. I quit my dance agent & making jewelry, & was on a path to find a career that could sustain me but also keep me fulfilled. I didnt know what I wanted to do but I knew that one of my strengths is organization. One day, I realized I could fuse organization & my creative background together in event planning, so I cold-e-mailed 20+ different production companies in LA hoping one would take a chance on me even though I had zero experience..and one did, which is where I met Karrie. I got hired & became a junior event coordinator. I was with that company for a few years, then ventured off to freelance for other production companies in LA until ultimately, I decided that it was time to be my own boss & have my own clients... and I wanted Karrie to do it with me.
