Growing up in New Jersey, this was a view I saw for 21 years. Ive been to the World Trade Center and surrounding area 100s of times. The night before, I was at Yankee Stadium and there was a rain delay. It was really stormy, something out of a movie. I recall saying to my friends that the sky looked like the movie Ghostbusters. Eventually the game was rescheduled for the next day. We headed home. I remember the ride home clearly as I always do when Im on the New Jersey Turnpike, I stare at the beautiful skyline of Manhattan. The next day was September 11, 2001. Like everyone else on that morning I was completely shocked, scared, confused, feelings Id never felt before. Feelings I never wanna have ever again. Everything changed that morning. The weekend to follow, the NFL cancelled all the games and rescheduled them for the last week of the season. The Raiders were playing the Jets in Oakland. I bought 2 tickets. This was going to be my first time flying since that tragic day, this was going to be my first time in California, this was going to be my first time at the Oakland Coliseum. This was something I had to do, this was something I wanted to be a part of. This was something I had to do. I was scared shitless to take that flight in early January of 2002 dont get me wrong. Weeks to follow September 11th, the Yankees were in the Playoffs, and I remember going to as many games as I possibly could, 4-5. The feeling of being at Yankee Stadium and New York during these times is something Ill never forget. Its indescribable the emotions. We ended up losing the World Series to Arizona. Its surreal that something as a sporting event can really have an impact on your life. Going to these events was important, not for the sake of seeing the actually game. Many of you know my story...I walked through the World Trade Center daily enroute to work, except on that fateful 9/11 morning when I was sovereignly in CT leading a meeting. So much loss, grief, anguish. Lives lost, yet also recovery of the city I love. NYC is now again facing so much loss and unrest. It’s 4 am on September 11th and as I sit in a fire engine on a Wildland fire in Southern California looking for hot spots I think of the phrase “never forget”. 19 years ago on September 11th I was studying to become a paramedic and didn’t realize my path was leading me to become a firefighter. After that day it was clear to me that the war I knew of good vs evil from back home was now here in the USA. You see as a young Jewish kid I was very familiar with the phrase “never forget” my family was nearly completely exterminated by the nazis and if it wasn’t for my grandmother being the sole survivor of her family my whole family wouldn’t be here today. It’s because of this I don’t take the term never forget lightly. So to my fellow first responders and country: May we never forget the tremendous loss of first responders and civilians that day. May we never forget the families they left behind. May we never forget that we must constantly train to be ready for the next challenge. May we never forget that evil still exists and wants to harm us. May we never forget that as first responders this job has never been about us, but about serving others. May we never forget that it doesn’t matter how good the technology and equipment we have, it still boils down to us being able to make critical decisions under stress. May we never forget the traditions of our brotherhood. May we never forget why we signed up to do this job. 9/11/2001 a day that I will never forget. It was fashion week and I was working with @jimmypaulhair that morning. We arrived at the tents in Bryant Park early as we were the first show that morning. While we were setting up, we heard the plane fly overhead and heading for the Towers. It was a sound so strong and powerful It sounded like a sonic boom. They cancelled the show and sent everyone home. The city was in a panic as something of this magnitude had never occurred. I left Bryant Park heading south to my apartment on 13th Street. I felt like i was the only person heading downtown as the crowds and crowds of people were heading uptown to get out of the downtown area. It was a frightening feeling. I spent that afternoon with @mallyroncal @philandmally watching the towers burn from the west side highway. Such a vivid memory that i will always remember. My heart goes out to all of the families of all the victims of this catastrophic event. Sadly, here we are in the midst of another catastrophic event. Covid-19 And thanks to #45 almost 200,000 people have died because he chose to not take the word of people in charge seriously. It was one of those crisp early NYC fall days when you feel like you can conquer the world. I woke up, got on the subway with my iced coffee, and went to my new job at Ogilvy and Mather advertising agency in midtown. We were in our morning status and out of nowhere this women started screaming in the hallway that one of the “twin” towers was hit and that her husband was in the building. My boss turned on the TV in the conference room and then we watched the second tower go up in smoke. It was so surreal. I had been in NYC for two months. I didn’t know how to feel. I was so scared and confused. We were all dismissed and I walked home along the crowded streets of people in panic. Luckily I had a strong network of friends from college and highschool to lean on. We banded together, did what we could to help, and held each other tight as we watched the endless news of this devastation. I ended up living in New York for the next 13 years. I watched as we re-built our city and faith in humanity. New York always seems to always get hit the worst. Probably because it’s the most resilient city in the world- filled with people who live there because they want to be there. People who live in NYC are survivors, whether it be terrorist attacks, hurricanes, blackouts, shady politicians, or pandemics, there is nothing that can break the core of this special place. Its hard to believe that its been almost 20 years since 9/11 and yet for everyone alive on that day it has been permanently carved into our memory. Almost every moment of that day is crystal clear for everyone who was around. For most of our audience it was THE event that propelled us into a career in medicine, the military, national security, law enforcement (and for most in GSMSG, a combination of those things). For many of us it is also hard to grasp that there are those who grew up entirely in a post 9/11 world. . . who dont really (or willingly choose not to) fully comprehend what that day did to America . . . . and because it is not clear to them, they cant, or choose not to, understand why we do what we do . .as a nation . . as a community . . and as an individual. This country has its flaws, but the freedom to just be free in the most fundamental sense to just live and let live and to exist and explore what these amber waves of grain have to offer. . . . along with your freedom to protest, shout, march and vote against it, and yet not have to worry about Novichok in your coffee, disappearing into a Chinese re-education camp, or Sarin gas being dropped into your village is ultimately what came under attack that day. We will never forget 🇺🇸 I will never forget that day. I was in Milan working at Versace in the Via Gesù office when I received a call from a friend telling me that a plane had hit one of the towers. At that moment no one knew the magnitude of the situation ,and there were rumors that it was a small plane. I ran down to @donatella_versace office to ask her to turn on @cnn to see what’s up. The horror when I saw what had happened, and as I watched the city that I love, under siege and there was nothing I could do. I watched as the tower continued to burn and all of the sudden the south tower was hit. I was in shock and disbelief I had no idea what was happening and I screamed and tears ran down my face. What is happening !!!! To this day it brings tears and chills to my body. The words “Never Forget” have become a seasonal phrase. Like Happy Halloween, or Merry Christmas we only say it, think of it and remember why we say it around today. 19 years later a nation has forgotten. We have forgotten our solemn promise to Never Forget. You could see the smoke of the towers from our classrooms. I was sitting in first period when it happened. No one knew what was happening until.. it happened. ⁣ ⁣ Undoubtedly, I will never forget. I was a young boy living my care free American life in Brooklyn, New York, when it happened. It was a brisk morning and school had just begun. I will never forget the hardworking cab drivers who had their cars lit on fire, tires slashed, and bricks thrown through windows like my own father. I will never forget my brother being beaten senseless with metal crow bars as he left his high school after 9/11. I will never forget his bruised face and broken bones. I will never forget. But the beautiful thing about a painful past is that it gives us hope to create an even more beautiful and fruitful future. Indeed we will not forget. The pain, the hurt, strength, the willpower, the selflessness of our human family. But we must also never forget our mistakes. Never forget & pay tribute. In our hearts rests the victims of 9/11, the heroes who risked their lives to save others and the families whom forever lost their loved ones. On 9/11 - I was in fourth grade eating breakfast before school when the first plane hit the first tower. My mother watched in horror and was screaming at our little television. My father was flying to Boston at the time of the attack. With no cell phones (and particularly no service after this occurrence) nor any WiFi my mom couldn’t get in contact with my dad. For hours she panicked wondering if he was safe & also was heartbroken while watching thousands of people suffer. As a child I just couldn’t understand this event. I believed it was just an accident... In 2018 I visited #nyc and went to the @911memorial it truly was one of the most incredibly put together museums I have seen - the feeling I had as I walked through reading, watching, and listening to the panic & pain our country experienced could only be transferred. As a kid I used to ride my bike to the top of the Tourne Park in northern NJ where you could get a glimpse of the twin towers. It was a different type of beauty than I get now in the Wasatch, but it was beautiful and majestic nonetheless. 19 years ago that skyline was forever changed. Today I will remember all of the first responders running IN to save lives as others were running FOR their lives. Mr. Rogers said it best, “look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping.” Today I will remember and honor the 343 firefighters and 73 police officers who lost their lives trying to help others (not including others who have since passed from side effects). Today I will honor the families of all of the brave men and women who lost loved their loved ones 19 years ago. Today I will remember how our country came together and unified in the aftermath. Today I will choose to remember and acknowledge all of the good that is in people.
