Freunde der gepflegten Unterhaltung heute gibt es eine meiner Lieblingslocations 🥰 zu begutachten: „The Ghost Church“ 👻👻 Erbaut wurde sie schon im Jahr 1352. Als die Kirche Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ausbrannte, baute man sie im neo-romanischen und neo-gotischen Stil wieder auf. Im Jahr 1968 dann stürzte während einer Beerdigung das Dach ein. Die Bewohner von ... erkannten darin ein schlechtes Omen, einen Fluch, und zogen es fortan vor, die Messen außerhalb der Kirche abzuhalten. Im 17. Jahrhundert erlebte die bürgerliche Gesellschaft in den Niederlanden einen Wandel. Was zuvor eher belächelt wurde, schätzte man nun wieder: Das einfache Landleben der Bauersleute. Das zeigte sich unter anderem in den zahlreichen Besitztümern und Sommerresidenzen, die sich wohlhabende Regenten- und Kaufmannsfamilien fernab vom städtischen Leben leisteten. Auch bei Adriaen van Ostade ist dieser Wandel zu erkennen. Waren für den jungen Ostade die deftigen Bauerndarstellungen seines Malerfreundes Brouwer prägend, setzte Ende der 1640er Jahre ein grundlegender Wandel seines Stils ein. Seine Kirmes- und Wirtshausszenen stehen zwar in der Tradition des Bauerngenres, indem pointierte Kommentare und belustigende Belehrungen latent anklingen – es wird gefeiert, getanzt und getrunken –, aber nicht Ausschweifung und Leichtsinn sind Anlass der Darstellung, sondern die Zufriedenheit im Kleinen und die Freude an der Geselligkeit. Von den 50 Radierungen, welche Ostade zeitlebens schuf, wird in der Ausstellung ein erlesenes Konvolut gezeigt, ergänzt durch zwei Gemälde aus seinem Frühwerk. Damit wird die Bedeutung und der besondere Charakter von Ostades Radierkunst sowie sein Stilwandel zu einer einfühlsamen Handschrift nachvollziehbar. Measuring just 6 ½ by 8 ⅜ inches,`Abraham and the Angels’ is a profoundly beautiful, gem-like painting on panel that stands among the finest works by #Rembrandt ever to come to auction. Of the total 136 biblical paintings Rembrandt produced, the present work is one of only five remaining in private hands, with the large majority in prominent museum collections. Among these biblical paintings, only 29 depict Old Testament scenes, with the present panel representing one of only two examples in private collections. Painted in 1646, during an emotionally-turbulent yet highly productive period of his life, ‘Abraham and the Angels’ depicts the precise moment when God, the principal source of light in the scene, reveals to Abraham that his elderly wife Sarah will bear him a son, Isaac, within a year. Artista non convenzionale ed emozionante, nominato nel 1639 “pittore del re Luigi XIII”, Georges de La Tour è ricordato per commistione di spiritualità e realismo, sempre in bilico tra delicatezza e brutalità. Artista enigmatico, ritrae angeli presi dal popolo, santi senza aureola né attributi iconografici, preferendo soggetti di classi sociali non elevate rispetto ai personaggi altolocati. I suoi dipinti, di piccole e medie dimensioni, sono caratterizzati anche da un uso di luci e ombre che richiamano Caravaggio, così come la scelta dei personaggi umili raffigurati nei suoi quadri. Ma è sicuramente la luce l’aspetto caratteristico di questo pittore: i lumi artificiali definiscono l’atmosfera dei suoi quadri, delineano i personaggi schiarendo i colori notturni e permettendo così di creare contrasti significativi, effetti di controluce che attribuiscono alle sue opere un effetto di introspezione unico, alternando atmosfere mistiche e più rassicuranti. Grazie a questi effetti vengono delineati anche i personaggi da lui raffigurati e le loro emozioni suscitate dal gioco, dal vino e dalla musica, sottratte all’ombra e consegnate al mondo della pittura, capace di superare ogni dimensione temporale conservando la bellezza degli oggetti, dei profili femminili, la fragilità delle azioni e dei sentimenti. On this day on June 13, 1774, the Rhode Island legislature passed a law banning the importation of slaves into the colony, becoming the first of Britain’s North American colonies to do so. This law was one of the first anti-slavery laws in the United States. Before this, there were 4 different ports of entry of enslaved Africans in the transatlantic trade located in Rhode Island. However, leading merchants, including John Brown and George DeWolf, continued to engage in the slave trade. One of the leading figures in Rhode Island behind abolitionism was Moses Brown, John Brown’s brother. The Brown family owed much of their wealth to their mercantile success in the slave trade in Rhode Island. Becoming deeply disturbed by the plight of the slaves in America, in 1774 he converted from Baptist to Quaker, and threw himself upon the abolitionist cause. In 1787, he helped pass a statute forbidding anyone to outfit slave voyages in Rhode Island ports. In 1789, Brown helped found the Providence Society for Abolishing the Slave Trade to help enforce the anti-slave trade legislation. Moses Brown’s house was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Providence was on route from New Bedford, where escaping slaves arrived by ship, to Fall River and then Rhode Island. Moses taught his son, Obadiah, to actively oppose slavery and he did just that, sponsoring free blacks to help them find employment, helped with their finances, and backed them up in legal disputes. Rhode Island eventually abolished all slavery and emancipated all slaves in 1843, with the adoption of the new state constitution. Pictures: 1. Moses Brown 2. I was commissioned by @edinburghmedicalschool to create this image. It is a reimagining of a Rembrandt painting from 1632 called ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp’ (swipe to see it) a copy of which hangs in their Department of Anatomy. The original shows a group of male medical students and teacher gathered around a cadaver. It was decided to reproduced this image with contemporary women medical students who represent the Edinburgh Seven who were the very first British women medical students 150 years ago. Being women they were at that time not allowed to graduate so were rightly honoured at last year’s posthumous degree ceremony. It was a tough job to shoot in a short period of time but I loved being part of redressing the balance. Its new home is the Sophia Jex-Blake common room in the Chancellor’s Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter. Be sure to check it out next time you are passing. The contemporary medical students are; Simran, Izzie, Sorna, Ella, Mei Yen, Caitlyn, Megan alongside Teaching Fellow in Anatomical Science, Alethea. Liam kindly modelled the cadaver. Prints are available on request. Last selfportrait, always a mystery For a long time, this painting was the only self-portrait of which it was established that Rembrandt had painted it in his year of death. In his face expression you can clearly see that also Rembrandt knew that his time was coming. The finish of this painting is minimal, and an obvious thought would be that the self-portrait was left unfinished with Rembrandt’s death.
