Last week Adam and I departed on a tour through the Rocky Mountains (@ridewithgps route linked in my profile). From our door we took the railroad tracks from Durango to Silverton- a bumpy yet beautifully remote ride that I am glad to have had the rare chance to experience while the local train is not running at full capacity. . The rest of the route has been as lively and bumpy as the first part, criss-crossing the continental divide on old gold and silver mining roads that wind themselves steeply up to and down from altitudes surpassing 12,000 ft. . I would normally have many long tours in my legs by this time of year but due to Covid and the important work that the Black Lives Matter Movement spurred within the cycling industry and for @wtfbikexplorers I have been doing a lot more typing and zooming than riding and touring — and I’m feeling it. . I’m feeling it physically, yes, but more importantly I’m connecting with myself in the best way I can — pushing my body to its limits, jumping into ice cold swimming holes, camping beneath the stars, and surrounding myself with so much natural beauty and the one I love. This is my self-care to refuel for the work ahead. . As we know cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration are common age-related diseases where early detection is so important. Until someone suggests a better name, Im calling this the Cirriform Min. Its a more minimal take on the #CirriformTarp, utilizing the original designs single pointed beak and omitting the dedicated vent. With these changes, and by using 0.5 oz #dyneema, Ive gotten the weight of this tarp down to 7.3 oz (9.6 w/ rigging & sack), about 3 oz lighter than the standard DCF8 version. Jeder Koch-Lehrling bekommt es von seinem Küchenmeister tagaus tagein zu hören: „Ein Messer muss immer in Bewegung sein.“ Denn: Bewegung reduziert die Reibung. Und mit weniger Reibung lässt sich nun mal besser schneiden. Also gilt es, das Messer beim Wiegeschnitt nicht nur auf und ab, sondern auch vor und zurück zu bewegen. Und so gehts: Messer mit dem vorderen Teil der Klinge auf dem Schneidbrett aufsetzen. Schneidgut unter der Klinge platzieren. Dann das Messer abwärts über den Radius der Klinge nach vorne schieben. So schneidet man. Mit der Aufwärtsbewegung wird das Messer wieder zurückgezogen. So holt man für den nächsten Schnitt aus. Diese Bewegungsschritte wiederholen sich. Das Messer beschreibt quasi eine Rolle rückwärts. Dabei ist die Klinge immer „tangential“ in Kontakt mit dem Schneidbrett, was eine bessere Führung gewährleistet. Geschnitten wird tatsächlich nur im hinteren Drittel der Klinge. Am besten trainiert man die Bewegung erst einmal ohne Schneidgut. - Not as simple as it seems is the so-called rock chop. We have been spending our summer days at the lake. Ive been solo parenting in Canada since mid June and the kids and I have been in the water almost every day! I just ate some bug… I guess its protein? Why is my bag so heavy? I should have left that extra sweater. But what if it snows? Do we have enough food? I dont think we packed enough food. Weve been hiking for 2 hours, so how is it not even half way there? What kind of vacation is this?! Next vacation we are relaxing by the beach! Shoot, COVID, so no international travel... I need to catch my breath again. Through this discomfort I find so much beauty, determination and self-awareness. As the weather changes without warning and the views of river valleys get more rewarding the higher you get, a hike is a thorough lesson in humility and respect for nature. I’ve become more humbled person! Spending time in the backcountry has humbled me in many ways, whether I am on trails or my everyday life. I am reminded that life continues despite my own problems. The bears still wonder around, the trees still grow, the streams still run. Life moves on. Nature is a raw force. Unfettered and unforgiving. It can take your breath away with the magnificence of a landscape or bring you to your knees with the ruthlessness of a freak storm. I am humbled to experience this beauty, and use the moment to lament. Backpacking has taught me a great way to look at life, to feel my body, to make decisions, to be able to organize my own thoughts, to keep moving forward. Happy #FeatureFriday IDPT!! Meet Greg-- Greg came to IDPT after having his prostate removed due to prostate cancer. Read below to see what he has to say about his experience. Like many men faced with prostate cancer, I chose surgery over radiation as my preferred treatment. I knew ahead of time that after surgery I might have some incontinence. That’s because a guy’s prostate puts extra pressure against the urethra, which helps control his “pee urge,” but prostate cancer surgery removes the prostate altogether. After the surgery, when I discussed this with my urologist who performed the surgery, he told me that occasional leakage is my “new normal” and I would just have to learn to live with it. Well, that wasn’t good enough for me. Just because I got treated for prostate cancer didn’t mean that life as I knew it had to be over. It just meant that I needed to adjust, somehow. My urologist told me that strengthening my Kegel muscles would help, and everything I read said the same thing. But somehow it wasn’t quite enough. One day I found myself running to the bathroom when all I did was stand up. I started thinking, hey, women grow up without a prostate and they figure out how to handle it. What was I not doing correctly? Then I saw an ad for Inner Dynamics. The ad said they could help guys like me who had their prostate removed and still had lingering incontinence issues. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I checked them out. I must say, I was quite impressed with their knowledge of human anatomy. Little did I know that my Kegels can only go so far, and that the trick is to build up all those other little pelvic floor-area muscles that I didn’t even know were there. I haven’t posted here in awhile, but we are on the road home after 9 days in the Tetons. The last time we were there as a family was 4 years ago, the summer before my grandparents’ property was sold. For years the kids have asked why I get to go for my retreats but they don’t get to go. It was finally time to bring them back and i booked our cabin a full year in advance. We have had so much travel cancelled but we decided to road trip out there and it was everything I hoped it would be despite Covid. So many images on my memory cards of our adventures in this place that means so much to me. So, my son Luke has had cancer - twice. He has been lucky enough to have a wish granted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Colorado. As a thank you to the Make a Wish Foundation and a way to pay it forward to the next child, the Jones family, along with the Telluride Crossfit community need your help. To be clear, we are not looking for donations for Luke’s wish - we are raising money for the next child. On May 4th, 2019 we will be ‘Rowing for Wishes’. The fundraiser is simple: You ask friends, family, co-workers, etc to sponsor you per meter of rowing. Then on May 4th you get 5 minutes to row as many meters as possible. You then multiply the meters rowed by the amount raised and 100% of funds will be contributed to the Make a Wish Foundation. The event will take place on May 4 at Telluride CrossFit. July 4th hike in New Hampshire! Did the Ridge Loop. Had to park in Cannon Mtn parking and start there because the Lafayette trailhead parking we wanted was full. Hiked Green Leaf Trail -- Mt Lafayette-- Ridge Trail to hit Mt Lincoln and Little Haystack -- Falling Waters trail back to Mt Lafayette campground parking and a 2.4 mile walk back to the car on the bike trail. The ridge loop took us 7 hours not including a short stop at the Green Leaf Hut to get water. The walk back to the car was a slow and humbling walk but we did it! 11 miles total. Mt. Lafayette is 5249 ft 💪and going back down the Falling Waters trail we also took a wrong turn at Shining Rock and had to turn around so that added a little bit of extra time (and mileage). - @bistrobabe11 on Instagram
