Lets talk fins! What did you start with, and what do you have now? I started with old, heavy, second-hand, split-fin ScubaPros with plastic buckle ankle straps. I loved how easy they were on my knees, but I didnt get a lot of power out of them. I also hated clipping/unclipping the buckle. Seawing Novas are pretty popular these days - and now they come in TURQUOISE! I like mine because, as you can see when I kick, they have an articulated hinge that flexes and doesnt put a lot of pressure on my knees. But I still feel like I can keep up in a significant, Kauai current. Also: spring hinges for ankle straps!! It was this old rusty Nissan truck. Got it at an auto auction on the west side for next to nothing. I remember getting pulled over and talking my way out of the no insurance and registration ticket. Drove straight home and painted the truck with some blue house paint. Rolled it out. Looked like shit but it even fooled some of my friends. I didn’t have money back then to get insurance, and to get it registered you needed a safety check. No way this thing was passing one of those. Safety stickers were easy to find though. Plenty rental cars down at the bay. One guy on lookout, a razor blade and some wax paper. It wasn’t two weeks later I ran out of gas rounding Waimea. Right there on the right headed towards foodland when that small little pullout was there. Before the landslide. Good spot to check the waves fast kine but shitty spot to run out of gas. Gaurans a ticket this time if the cop drove by so I had to at least get it to the church parking lot. Frantic, I searched the truck and don’t ask me why but for some reason I had a nearly full bottle of Jack Daniels in the truck. I emptied it in the gas tank. Where I heard that might work, don’t ask. I think it was @surfnavarro first winter on the north shore. In his teens. Early 2000’s. I remember he was in the back with some other guys all freaked out. I told um to get out and push. The truck sputtered and with their help pushing between loud explosion noises we got it around the corner into the church lot. Safe. This was the same winter as this spread in @surfer_magazine My first one. Unidentified. I think @sean_davey took it. Riding a singlefin @captain_freed and I shaped right there at three tables. I gave it some Halloween colors. Must have been October. My first custom gun. Two wave hold down on that thing. Good times. - @deepwatersurf on Instagram

Are you tired of me talking (about) trash? Well, Im also tired of seeing it on every. single. dive. I go on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yesterday was #worldcleanupday, and if theres one thing I learned, its that we need more of those. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even though everyone knows plastic waste is a huge problem, Im convinced many people in western countries are not fully aware of it. I know this because I remember being shocked by how clean the streets were when I went back home to visit. People in wealthy countries are not confronted with the waste problem on a daily basis, so it doesnt exist. People in poorer countries dont have the means or education to deal with it, so the problem persists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Living in the Philippines, Im much more environmentally aware than I used to be. I see now that there simply is no other option. Im convinced that if everyone would spend some time (Im not talking about a resort holiday) in a third world country, they would make more of an effort to reduce their plastic waste. And honestly, its really not that hard. This BSA motorcycle was a part of a cargo of supplies on SS Thistlegorm that were on their way to supply the 8th Army over 70 years ago. The sea has now claimed it as its own and softened its militaristic profiles with a coating of encrusting life. En sus palabras: 🐙Después de ver con impotencia lo que ha sucedido con el pez luna la pasada semana en Almería quisiera aportar mi granito de arena con las medusas. Es cierto que las medusas rosadas o medusas clavel (Pelagia noctiluca), las que vemos normalmente en nuestras costas son muy urticantes, sin embargo otras especies son prácticamente inofensivas, de belleza sin igual, y sirven de cobijo a pequeños alevines de peces. Quiero crear concienciación para la gente que las vea, que por favor NO LAS SAQUEN DEL AGUA, que si pueden naden con ellas y disfruten de la majestuosidad del mar. Son ejemplares totalmente inofensivos, por favor déjenlos en su hogar. 🐟Primero, os presento a la medusa Rhizosthoma luteum; la reina del mediterráneo y la mas grande de todas. Puede llegar a pesar 40 kilos y medir 2 metros de largo. 🐟🐟Segundo, os muestro a la medusa comúnmente conocida como huevo frito (Cotylorhiza tuberculata). Sweetlips and glass fish at their overhang in Raja Ampat. Summer 2015. The glass fish surrounding the sweetlips occasionally formed a wall of fish — a straight wall top to bottom from the rock above to the sand below.... surrounding the ever-changing school of sweetlips with not a single fish (of hundreds) even a quarter inch ahead or behind the others in the wall. Incredible coordination of beautiful little fish I had never seen before.
