Todays Downtown Bryan History dates back to 25 years ago when Caffé Capri first opened their doors. Caffe Capri was opened on September 18, 1995 by Rami Cerone, Texas A&M class of 95, relying solely on money from credit card cash advances. It was a bold move, especially since downtown was not yet established. 25 years later however, this restaurant continues to grow and has won numerous awards such as Best Italian and the Aggie 100 fastest growing businesses in the world. The menu is a combination of recipes: some consist of items that come directly from the Cerone family kitchen. Many are the result of Rami constantly experimenting with different ingredients - what you see are the recipes that actually worked. The marinara sauce is a secret recipe from his fathers family. So secret in fact, that until November of 1995, his father would come twice a week just to make 30 gallons of sauce (but not before chasing everyone out of the kitchen). Thankfully however, business picked up and twice a week was no longer enough so Rami finally learned the recipe. The open kitchen is there so you can see the food being prepared - we have nothing to hide. This building was originally a grocery store. However, only the tin ceiling remains original - the rest has been restored. The tables and columns are made of a stone called rose travertine that was taken from the interior of an old Downtown Bryan building. Upstairs, we offer a private banquet room that can seat up to 60 people. The music, although different for an Italian restaurant, adds to the upbeat atmosphere and the unique decor. But now, the Conservative Government – under Priti Patel’s directive – is proposing to take this even further: making trespassing on privately-owned land a *criminal offence*. Roy is not my real middle name. When I was 20 years old, I took my dads name and added it to mine as a tribute to honor him in everything I do. Since then, Steven Roy Thomas has been my stage name and my identity. I always strived to make my dad proud. He worked so extremely hard his entire life just to make his family comfortable and I’ve always wanted to give him back that love. After I graduated college, I wrote my dad a long letter asking for his blessings as I made the decision to move to India to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. My dad was always slightly uneasy about my career choice since it’s not the most formulaic stable approach. It’s not that he didn’t want me to pursue what I love, it’s just that he didn’t want to see me fail. But even with all the risks and question marks that comes with the territory of working in entertainment, my dad never took away my freedom to dream and the freedom to fulfill my purpose. I know there are many people especially coming from a South Asian background that have major restrictions from their parents when it comes to doing what they love as a career. My dad never took away that chance from me. Today, I am so..so angry as I fail to understand how my dad can be taken away so abruptly from my life. But today, I have decided to put all that anger towards my success. I will NOT let this virus win. I will NOT be defeated. This photo was taken 3 hours before my dad passed away. It is a reminder to me that I will not let all my dads efforts go in vain. I WILL become someone someday and when I do, it’s all because of all the sacrifices my dad made to get me there. While it painfully breaks my heart that my dad can no longer physically be a part of my journey, I vow to work harder than ever to make sure I can feel his pride through my existence. I went somewhere on Cape Cod that I’ve never been before! The Cape Cod Lavender Farm! Did you know there was such a thing on the Cape? They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this summer! Here are some tips for your own visit. 1️⃣ It’s good for a quick 30-45 minute visit to walk around the big field (located down the path past the gift shop) or longer if you want to walk the Island Pond Trails around the farm. 2️⃣ Looks like July is the best time to visit because that’s when the lavender is at its peak. Check their website for exact harvest dates. capecodlavenderfarm.com 3️⃣ Buy a bunch of freshly harvested lavender for $10. They let you tour the farm for free - it’s the least you can do and it’s totally worth it! 4️⃣ The parking lot is tiny and it was overflowing already at 10:30 am when I got there. Plan to arrive early - or just know that you’ll have to park along the side of the dirt road and walk a bit. 5️⃣ Although masks are required right now, it will NOT keep that wonderful scent from making its way through. - - - - - When you visit us here on the Cape this summer, please remember that our rural towns have limited medical resources. Follow social distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Last night, I had a moment. I was in the studio digging through my book bag and came across this set list from tour last year. Now, many of these songs I have not played or heard in full since. However, as I unfolded the paper, I was instantly transported to that pre-show moment that we all long for on show days: I could hear the sound of our intro track starting as the band huddled for a pre-show prayer, the cheer from the crowd as the lights went down, the smell of the whiskey soaked floor sticking to our boots back stage, I heard my brother reminding the entire band to make sure everybody’s zipper is up before we step out in front of the crowd, I felt the panic in praying that my mic wasn’t muted for the entire first verse like it was the night before (it happened), I could feel the heat from a packed house and the relief from not tripping over a cable after my 14 step trek to center stage was complete. I made it. Show time. Let’s go..  I sat in the studio for 45 minutes, eyes closed, playing out every detail in my mind. All the way down to the post-show bus hangs at 3:00am, debriefing the night’s performance while finishing off the bottle of bourbon we took from the headliners green room (sorry, @ChaseRice), empty boxes of pizza, the passing of the aux-chord, debates over the best songs, laughing like kids at camp...  Honestly, I could see it all.. but MOST importantly, I saw you. The best part. Without you, the audience, my songs would only be sounds. I realize we are in unprecedented times and the thought of a live show with the country music community linked arm in arm, singing at the top of their lungs, sounds strange right now. However, this reminder is for you AND for me, that this too shall pass. And when it does pass, it’s going to be better and sweeter than we remember it.  If you go to my shows, you know I always frisbee a pick or two out at someone’s forehead after every song. I miss that… so consider this a digital pick-toss to you from across the internet. One written about my Mum and her steadily advancing Alzheimers. The sestina is about the trickiest form of poetry I ever tried. Once Id done one, I swore that was it, I never needed to do another. Then I saw that @rhymes_n_roses had done one that she rather brilliantly made to rhyme. Thus inspired I did a bit more studying and found an old rhyming variation by the poet AC Swinburne. I based mine on that structure. A sestina has six 6-line verses and a closing 3-line verse. The closing words of the lines of the first verse are repeated as the closing words of the subsequent 5 verses but each time shuffled into a different set order. For the closing 3-line verse, 3 of the end words end the lines and the other three appear in the middle. This creates the disorientating effect of unpredictable repetition, which feels like it should be an oxymoron but actually isnt. This characteristic seemed to lend itself perfectly to describing my Mums experience with Alzheimers. The last words verse by verse are ordered as follows in this take on the sestina 123456 614325 561432 256143 321654 432561 246(135 middle) Another technical note. Its all in iambic pentameter (10 syllables per line with the 5 even numbered syllables stressed). Today is a special day! Till a month back, I hadnt even remotely imagined having ten thousand monthly listeners. 🚀🚀 Roughly two months back I almost made my mind to quit music production and give it up cos Ive spent roughly 10 years playing for a band and as an independent artist. In those 10 years, Ive personally struggled a lot to keep my music career alive cos keeping a band alive is difficult plus I was doing a job in parallel. Steps to effective self mastery 1. Talk To Yourself The first crucial step in developing self-mastery is to become an observer of your thoughts—to become self-aware, self-reflective. To think about your thinking. 2. Make Peace With Your Past Making peace with your past allows you an untarnished and more objective approach to the present, ideally resulting in a positive future.  It’s hard to pick up anything new when your hands are full with burdens.  It means to let go, forgive, and as humanly possible, to forget. 3. Play Devil’s Advocate A more critical mind will result in making better decisions.  You’ll be able to iron out any unreasonable biases that appear in your logic. 4. Keep A Journal. The more you journal, the more you’re aware of your behaviors and thought patterns, and subsequently, the more ability you have to change and grow. 5. Break The Bystander Effect When a situation obviously calls for a response, a self-mastered person takes initiative and steps right in.  There’s no room for passivity and sitting on the bench.  Don’t hesitate, just do it. Follow through with what you know is right. 6. Cognitive Reappraisal  Cognitive reappraisal is reinterpreting an event in a way that reduces the negative response or completely replaces it with a positive one.  So, rather than being fired from your job, you see it as freedom to become your own boss. 7. This movement is bringing people of all backgrounds together in solidarity—a thought that’s inspiring to some and terrifying to others. A Black man was killed, and seeing it has touched humanity in a way that is much deeper than surface beefs and drama. This tragedy has now become a shared platform for dialogue and change. It has also refocused much-needed light on issues that may not receive the same relative support and exposure. Immigration isn’t an issue that only impacts people from #Mexico and #CentralAmerica, but our families from and connected to that region often carry the brunt of the anxiety—dealing with the majority of the targeting, trauma, and stigma in Southern California. Pain and corruption don’t wait in line, and the positive momentum of this unity needs to be maintained and focused on the various threats to peace in the communities that we share. We have the opportunity and capacity to unite and address the various complex issues that we face. There will be more goofy shit. There will be more negativity. Hi #poetrycommunity, how are you all? I’ve been posting less because I’ve been focusing on my mental health and the current events that are taking around the world have been exhausting me. After the hearing of #breonnataylor case, we are once again reminded that this world doesn’t give a fuck about women, especially when you’re a woman that’s black, indigenous, or of color. I feel defeated. Once again I’m reminded that the world we live in is unfair, unjust, and pure evil. I wrote this piece to honor my mother - The woman behind the growth and progress of this poet. The strength and power I have today is a result of this brave woman. A woman who wasn’t afraid to fight the entire world for the sake of her three boys (I’m the middle child). This piece uses two prompts shared by the uber talented Saakshi @anonymousxonly Prompt 1 - My mother sleeps with a dagger under her pillow. Prompt 2 - Haunted silence To the men reading this - Take a minute and remind the women in your life that you love them, that you care for them, that you cherish them, and that you stand with them no matter what! And once you’re done reminding them of their greatness, get angry. Be very very angry. From Pakistan to U.S, women keep facing violence in one form of the other and in all honesty it is our fault. It is our fault that with our silence we’ve taught the perpetrators that they can get away with all the shit they make our women go through. Use your voice, your strength, your power, and your courage to amplify the voices and struggles of the women around you. Listen to them when they say they’re being oppressed. Let’s teach ourselves, our sons, and our fellow men that before being a wife, a daughter, a mother, or a partner, a woman is a human! Hey there #poetrycommunity, how are you people doing? I’m disheveled, hurt, and grieving. Greiving over the #violenceagainstwomen that is rampant in my country - Pakistan. Recently, a mother was raped and robbed in front of her children. This isn’t the first rape case. 2100 cases have been reported in the past eight months (majority of them never get reported). As a victim of sexual abuse, hearing such cases is gut wrenching. It feels like someone ripped my wounds that were healing. Young girls, boys, men, women, even animals aren’t safe from this filth. To top it all off, the chief of police (Umer Sheikh) of Lahore gave an interview in which he blamed the woman for travelling late at night. He blamed her for taking a secluded route. This shows how common the culture of victim blaming is. Protests all over the country are taking place but none of this will be fruitful if we - especially men don’t speak up and stand for our women. In this patriarchal society, us men have countless unfair advantages - our voices are heard, our opinions matter, so I urge all #pakistanimen to raise their voices. We must ensure the safety of our women cause the next victim could be someone you love and care about. I have no sympathy or mercy for rapists and I’m in complete favor of giving them capital punishments and while we’re at it we also need to make sure that victims of sexual abuse get proper attention and care. We must provide them immediate relief (apart from prompt medical testing by trained professionals that are empathetic) and therapy for PTSD. Additionally, let’s use our power and get rid of this vile, victim blaming chief of police that feels women shouldn’t be travelling late at night or shouldn’t be travelling alone, instead of providing them with security. P.S - If you’re a man that lives in Pakistan and still haven’t raised your voice on this pressing concern then not only have I lost all respect for you but I’m also calling you out for promoting #rapeculture and #rapists by staying silent.
