I just got off the phone with a point person of @mvmnt4blklives, and here’s what I learned: M4BL is an umbrella fund, led by queer/femme/black activists, supporting a wide network of organizations dedicated to the fight for justice and equality for Black people. One of their main initiatives is to defund the police: they will be releasing a new platform on Juneteenth (June 19th) outlining their strategies for achieving this, implemented at local, state, and federal levels. Where does the money go? Supporting this movement requires supporting its constituents: in local communities, within organizations, on the frontline, in courtrooms, in congressional hearings, and in the headspace of everyone fighting for justice. This includes building and providing toolkits to educate people on how to gather, how to vote, how to amplify their voices, how to make change at every level. This also includes providing mental health resources, protection (legal work & security), and financial support for their partners. All this infrastructure requires time and money, aka money and money. As an “umbrella fund,” they redirect a lot of your donations to where they see fit, connecting and strengthening local efforts through their network, as well as national efforts to change legislation. Google Maps has removed images from the summit of Uluru, after Australia’s national parks body raised concerns over the fact that people were using street view to “walk” on top of the sacred Indigenous site. Visitors were banned from physically climbing the rock in October 2019 out of respect for the wishes of Uluru’s traditional owners, the Aṉangu people, for whom it has spiritual significance. But until the afternoon of September 23, people could still use Google Maps’ street view function to take a virtual walking tour up the now-closed walking track to the top of the rock, where user-generated photos would give them 360-degree photos of the summit. A spokesperson for Parks Australia told the ABC on Thursday that the government body had alerted Google Australia to the user-generated images from the Uluru summit that have been posted on their mapping platform and “requested that the content be immediately removed in accordance with the wishes of Aṉangu, Ulurus traditional owners, and the national parks Film and Photography Guidelines.
