This is the bottom of a Polaroid 250 packfilm camera — one of the higher-end models (with that cool flip-up Zeiss rangefinder) — which does actually have a tripod mount receptacle. The cheaper plastic versions rightly excluded the 1/4-20 threaded hole; however, even for this 250 that still mainly exists for handheld duties, there is an argument to mount it from time to time - even if mounting interferes with opening the back ... even if mounting is defeated by the poor balance of the system. At least Polaroid camera designers used the Leica method of locating the mount UNDERNEATH the shutter release rather than the center. - @new55film on Instagram

So today I had a fun request on a single for a more “70s” vibe! 😎✌🏼I love this for several reasons but I want to highlight something really important to me. Mastering isn’t one size fits all, and getting the results you want usually takes good communication! 🎉 There is this idea I run into often, that the mastering engineer should be handed a song and just “do their thing” with the client expecting something great. While this sometimes works fine, honestly, it’s not fair to anyone involved to ask them to read your mind and deliver exactly what you want. Most mastering engineers are capable of delivering many different types of results. It’s so important to take the time to talk and determine what you are looking for out of the mastering process. This not only sets proper expectations on the process but many times will result in a feedback process that further enriched the mix and ultimately the final product. If you want a machine to try to anticipate what you want there are plenty of AI based mastering options out there. If you want a final product you feel proud to put your name on, that feels like you and serves your vision, dig deep, figure out what you want and communicate the best you can with a human skilled at their craft. #jonsstudiogear #7 Another iconic classic in my collection - the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5! The Prophet was a revolutionary synth release in 1978. The first fully programmable polyphonic synth. Proper patch memory! You could actually save sounds! To easily switch between up to 40 sounds at the touch of a button & to load in external patches (via tape) - as straightforward as this seems now it must have seemed like a radical step forward at the time. The Yamaha CS80 came out at roughly the same time & was a more powerful synth but (aside from sounding great) the patch memory & easy portability of the Prophet gave it a different angle that helped make it a hit. I have to confess that with patch memory being less of an issue for me (if I want to easily flick through sounds then I can do this to the nth degree in the computer - I look to analogue synths for their individuality & character) then the polysynths that I find myself turning to are the #oberheim Four Voice & Roland #juno 6 more often than the Prophet. The more primitive nature, independence between the voices & distinctive filter character of the Oberheim hold more charm for me; while the Juno is a simpler synth to work with quickly (& to my ears with a fuller tone). My Prophet 5 is a rev3.3 - the last model produced. This has the advantage of MIDI as standard & theoretically more reliable than a Rev 2. But there are many who prefer the sound of the Rev2 models. I’ve never tried a Rev2 but there is a slight harshness to the sound of my Prophet that makes me wonder if the Rev2 might have a warmer tone (in a similar way to my preference for the Juno 6 over the 106). But those niggles aside it is a beautiful synth & a classic piece of synth history. I have put its individual character to use on several projects including the retro 80s-themed #rainbowsixsiege event #doktorscurse (see earlier Instagram post w/ some video of me recording the Prophet for this). Weve been collecting a few new toys during lockdown, first up weve got a pair of STAM U87s with all the mods, they sound absolutely stunning. Next to our Neumann ai, theyre extremely close in character but with a little more warmth and a little smoother in top end, which to our ears has been better on everything from overheads to piano - very happy with these mics!! Really weighty and well made also. We finally have some sennheiser 421s also to treat our lovely Gretsch toms, and also got round to converting an old Proac driver into a Sub-kick - amazing 40Hz bump on kick. Week 2: Pedals and Amps I’m just going to come out and say it. It’s 2020, I don’t mic cabs. There’s hundreds of pedal and virtual amp options and unless you’re in a room with some KILLER bass traps its not worth the risk. As for pedals as long as they are a) noiseless and b) don’t create huge volume spikes go nuts. A quick test I always do is record my bass sitting on the stand with the volume off and click on my pedals one by one. I look to see if there’s any spikes in db and also boost the recording to see if there’s any obvious noise. Throughout the years I’ve traded and sold any pedals that didn’t make the cut and invested in quality pedals and cables that reduce noise. - @_dan_bass_ on Instagram

The studio got a heart transplant last night. After many years of amazing sounding service, it was time to retire all four of my @lynxstudiotechnology Aurora 16 converters when their extreme operating temperatures started causing them to melt themselves. True story. After lots of stress, my studio now sounds better than ever. Major shoutout to some of the best people in the biz, who make the best sounding and most flexible converters Ive ever heard - @apogeedigital - for swooping in for an emergency rescue. With just two days notice, they were able to build and ship me 64 channels of Symphony IO mkII with HDX, Thunderbolt, AND Dante connections. Im floored wirh the flexibility of these things. And they sound so damn good. Also, I received them, unboxed them, and was mixing in about an hour. Easiest. Installation. Ever. Finally, big love to Chad Evans at @westlakepronashville. Let’s hear it for racks. Using a lot of this still in the tracking downtime to catch up on such a huge backlog of mixing. It’s not easy with Exie demanding my attention literally every few minutes but I find a way to get stuff done and most days manda comes to hang with Exie (Cos they are best friends)and help me get some time. Later this year, I’ll be putting in new rack furniture to accommodate more gear as I am simply out of space right now and each time something new comes in, something else gets put to the side temporarily.
